Justine- Next time Ron has a cold or a deep cough, you can make him a "mustard plaster" and yes, its period correct. Grind up some mustard seed into a powder and add about half as much flour. Mix on hot water, a little at a time until the mixture resembles pancake batter. Lay a clean cloth flat and spread this mixture on 1/2 of the towel, pulling the other side of fabric over the paste. Lay your patient on either his back or his front and lay the pasted fabric on the chest of the back. Leave on about 30 minutes. Repeat as needed. So glad Ron is doing much better. In your own stores there, do you keep many wild herbs? Elderberry cough syrup is also PC as is mullin. Peace out!

I hope you both recover quick! I learned to make a mustard plaster when I was a new bride. My husbands Grandmother tought me. I think she was born in the late 1890s You took a couple tablespoons of flour and a couple tablespoons of mustard powder and add super hot water to make a paste. Spread the hot paste on an old tea towel wrap the towel into thirds. The mustard will stain the towel so be sure it’s something you never plan to use again. Then wrap that into a old towel. Put it on the affected chest. It basically keeps the chest really warm for a long time. Then you drank a couple hot Toddies made with lots of booze to forget how awful you feel.
@SongOfSongsOneTwelve

I would recommend against the use of “super hot” towels or water as an application to sensitive areas like the chest! You could cause a second degree burn.

My Nana made mustard plaster when we were young. Thick and pasty she smeared it on a cloth and laid it on our chest. She would add mint to it to also help open nasal passages. Cinnamon and barley tea was another thing she would do with a touch of brandy or rock and rye. Gee it felt like I stepped back in time to Nana's home. Thanks and I truly hope Ron and you feel better.

It is amazing how these “old wives tale” natural tricks have been used for centuries and still work flawlessly today. Maybe we need to go to back to these remedies. They seem so much healthier. Love y’all’s videos Ron and Justine! This was so sweet to see y’all taking care of each other❤️

Yes, we can't just ignore old wives tales and old old remedies. Some are harmful (putting butter on burns seals the heat in--not good) but some are helpful. We just need to figure out which ones work, and why. Also, anything consumed can interact with other ingested medications, so we gotta watch out for that

Yes! It works! Small children are hard to give it to so you can chop an onion and pour hot water on it and place the bowl close to the child. Be careful when the water is hot so that the child doesn’t burn it self. It’s the fumes that stop the coughs.

My Meemaw was from Ireland and she used these ways to help when I was a child. We were poor, so going to the Dr. was not always a option. But her homemade cough syrup ( a pot filled with onions, garlic, molasses, mint, Orange zest and the juice, lemon zest and the juice, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg....and cheap whiskey....boiled then strained...it would get thick and was as dark as night...my Pawpaw called it Fix it Tar. A big spoon of that stuff and a nap....and you would feel a LOT better! She would make poultices of cinnamon, mint, lavender and warm oil for muscle aches...and fevers! Buttered Rum for a sore throat....and of course her old stand by meal for when your sick..Cracked Wheat with a touch of bacon grease, garlic, pepper and ....a mug of broth! I remember coming down with flus, croups and viruses a lot when I was little. Mom knew exactly what to do. She set up "croup tents" around the bed with a steaming machine, applied Vicks Vapo-Rub on my chest, insisted that I stay under those quilts, made sure I'd at least ate a little something, even if it was just 2 or 3 saltine crackers and a little ginger ale. But most of all, I remember the chicken or matzoh ball soup. One time, I had such a stubborn flu. So at bedtime Dad made a hot lemon toddy with a little Irish whiskey in it and told me to drink it, even if it tasted "yucky". The very next morning, no symptoms! Not even a runny nose. I'd practically be jumping out of bed, feeling A-OK and ready for mischief. So I hope both Ron and Justine, if they're still feeling bad, will consider the chicken or matzoh ball soup and even a hot toddy. I hope they're both already starting to feel in the pink!

Mustart poltaces and onion poultices were often applied to the chest. Saute an onion with just water, as it turns translucent add mustard seeds about a teaspoon and let them heat till they pop. Prop up the sick and put a thin tea towel on their chest. They have to stay still. Check the temperature is warm, not hot. The onion mix can have hot pockets. Put the onion mix on the tea towel on the person's chest. It can help with breathing.

Willow bark the inside part of it where it is still green, fresher the better. pound to a paste and make a "tea" of it. something like 1 part bark to 5 parts water. it has been a long time so don't quote me on that. but it is a good remedy for headache and body pains

I hope and pray for a speedy and full recovery. Having an illness and not being able to hunt, forage and do chores can be extremely difficult for the household. Martha Washington had some wonderful cures and remedies, lemon balm and mint verbena herbal teas are excellent, keeping a strong fire going is important, the air must be very warm. My family in the 1820s were in Southern Maryland and have been there since the 1680s, were among the largest tobacco farms and wealthiest in the county, but they still lived fairly rustic. Maryland tobacco was entirely different than other varieties in America, and it was used to clear the head and chest when sick, I've smoked pure Maryland tobacco at reenactments when sick, and the results were amazing. Although this cure has fallen from favor in recent years one is still quite effective. Pure strong Chinese black tea is very effective, the health benefits are confirmed by scientists today. Pure high grade keemun tea will help any illness. Stay warm and get well!

Excellent. We forget that just a hundred years ago, people died from the flu, pneumonia, and other diseases now easily treatable. Two hundred years ago it was even worse, nearly every family had lost one or more children to disease.

I have been on tours of historical apothecary shops in Virginia. The guides described all kinds of interesting remedies for healing, including bleeding. But I never heard of putting cinnamon sticks up the nose. That looked uncomfortable. At Mount Vernon, they describe George Washington's last days. He got very sick and when nothing work, bled him. They said they think the bleeding may have been a large contributor for what ended his life. Well, I hope you both feel better soon.

A cloth soaked in the water of boiled lavender flowers is also very good for headaches. A fusion of lemon, nutmeg and honey soothes a cough and sore throat.

I hope you get to feeling better soon Ron. I know of a lot of home remedies, but I can't think of much of what they might have used back then.. I know they used poltices and things like that since you can't afford alcohol. That would have been my first suggestion, maybe you could get your hands on a bit of homemade liquor like they made back then. (AKA Moonshine)
