After getting caught in the rain Ron has developed a fever, purging, the chills, a headache, a body ache, and weakness. It's a good thing that Justine is here to torture him back to health like usual.

Justine- Next time Ron has a cold or a deep cough, you can make him a "mustard plaster" and yes, its period correct. Grind up some mustard seed into a powder and add about half as much flour. Mix on hot water, a little at a time until the mixture resembles pancake batter. Lay a clean cloth flat and spread this mixture on 1/2 of the towel, pulling the other side of fabric over the paste. Lay your patient on either his back or his front and lay the pasted fabric on the chest of the back. Leave on about 30 minutes. Repeat as needed. So glad Ron is doing much better. In your own stores there, do you keep many wild herbs? Elderberry cough syrup is also PC as is mullin. Peace out!

My Nana made mustard plaster when we were young. Thick and pasty she smeared it on a cloth and laid it on our chest. She would add mint to it to also help open nasal passages. Cinnamon and barley tea was another thing she would do with a touch of brandy or rock and rye. Gee it felt like I stepped back in time to Nana's home. Thanks and I truly hope Ron and you feel better.

Yes, we can't just ignore old wives tales and old old remedies. Some are harmful (putting butter on burns seals the heat in--not good) but some are helpful. We just need to figure out which ones work, and why. Also, anything consumed can interact with other ingested medications, so we gotta watch out for that

Dear Justine, In the Soviet Union, we used mustard plaster in the 1980s when I was a child. It was bought at a pharmacy. Plasters were applied to the chest and back for a few minutes. (that is, closer to the lungs). this is an irritant that should cause a rush of blood, and strengthen the fight of the immune system against the disease. They are not applied to the head.

They used that in America too, until allopathic medicine took over in the 1930s and declared everything else "quackery." Boiling citrus peel, pith and all, for several hours and then drinking the water sweetened maybe with some honey, is a powerful cure.

I hope you both recover quick! I learned to make a mustard plaster when I was a new bride. My husbands Grandmother tought me. I think she was born in the late 1890s You took a couple tablespoons of flour and a couple tablespoons of mustard powder and add super hot water to make a paste. Spread the hot paste on an old tea towel wrap the towel into thirds. The mustard will stain the towel so be sure it’s something you never plan to use again. Then wrap that into a old towel. Put it on the affected chest. It basically keeps the chest really warm for a long time. Then you drank a couple hot Toddies made with lots of booze to forget how awful you feel.
@SongOfSongsOneTwelve

I would recommend against the use of “super hot” towels or water as an application to sensitive areas like the chest! You could cause a second degree burn.

I think it must have been frightening to fall ill in those days, and frightening for the loved ones as well. Place on top of that being isolated... . I'm not sure about putting cinnamon sticks up your nose, but ginger syrup is very good to use; especially if you add fresh lemon and honey. Not sure about the mustard plaster and bath. I think back then they were still operating on the idea of the four humors. The barley water is actually very nutritious and gentle on grumpy bowels. I don't think I could survive a cold without oranges, tylenol and chicken soup. And I can't imagine being ill with a stomach flu with no indoor plumbing. My Meemaw was from Ireland and she used these ways to help when I was a child. We were poor, so going to the Dr. was not always a option. But her homemade cough syrup ( a pot filled with onions, garlic, molasses, mint, Orange zest and the juice, lemon zest and the juice, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg....and cheap whiskey....boiled then strained...it would get thick and was as dark as night...my Pawpaw called it Fix it Tar. A big spoon of that stuff and a nap....and you would feel a LOT better! She would make poultices of cinnamon, mint, lavender and warm oil for muscle aches...and fevers! Buttered Rum for a sore throat....and of course her old stand by meal for when your sick..Cracked Wheat with a touch of bacon grease, garlic, pepper and ....a mug of broth! Ah, the lessons of the good ole days

I am actually an RN. I cannot imagine how difficult it would be to be a mom, and be sick and have to take care of a husband and six kids or so back before central heating and running water, toilets that flush and no washer and dryer.And no modern disinfectants. Justine, you are doing an excellent job at keeping Ron and yourself comfortable with what little you have. Get well soon, both of you.

Mustard plaster: Egg white, flour, ground mustard. Spread the mixture onto a piece of dry muslin the lay on the chest with mustard mixture up for congestion. Do not lay mustard mix directly onto the skin this could cause burns. OOPS! Blistered feet? Ask the apothecary for white willow bark then steep for tea. This will help bring down the fever. Expensive nutmeg for a headache? Do get well soon!

I enjoy watching you both, reminds me when I was 5 , my Grand fathers house, didn’t have electricity, water was the well and we would get a bucket of water at a time. The out house was across a branch which I hated . I was use to having all the luxuries. But I wouldn’t trade those memories for anything.
