Anyone else here surprised to learn that Valentine's day has been a practice for over 1,000 years? The oldest surviving valentine poem was written by a duke to his wife in 1415. The first commercially printed Valentine's Cards appeared in the 18th century in England and were made on a large scale by mechanical machines printing paper with images hearts, birds, cupids and red roses. These cards were even back then known as "valentines." Other traditions by the 18th century included giving flowers, giving sweets (including candy hearts) and small gifts. A man may write his sweetheart's name on a piece of red, heart shaped paper then pin it on his sleeve hence the saying wearing one's heart on one's sleeve. Name drawing ceremonies were also popular and had been for quite some time by the early 19th century. Here is a quote by Bourne, in his Antiquitates Vulgares (1725): "It is a ceremony, never omitted among the Vulgar, to draw Lots which they Term Valentines, on the Eve before Valentine-day. The names of a select number of one sex, are by an equal number of the other put into some vessel; and after that, every one draws a name, which…is called their Valentine, and is also looked upon as a good omen of their being man and wife afterwards."
Maybe a little older than that. However the specific date of when the US started celebrating such popular date remains ambiguous and obscure. Yes it became popular in the late 1800, pretty close to the 19 century. As far as 1820's is too early, I guess to assume that the pioneers were engaged in preparing valentines treats at that stage in American culture. But then again its date that has not been written on rock.
St Valentine was a priest of the early Holy Roman Catholic Church. He was beheaded for breaking the civil law which prohibited Catholic marriages (he is a martyr and the patron saint of lovers). God bless you!
@@southernenigma3427 Fun fact: Laura Ingalls, in her books, often talks about her father butchering a pig. She also has a pork chop recipe in one of her books. :)
Anyone else just loves the sounds of these time period videos? I love the cracking fire, the scraping on the pans, and even footsteps (always loved those kinds of footsteps etc sounds in old movies too, don’t hear them as much in new movies).
I love how simple their love is. Wanting to care for each other and appreciating the care they each receive, working towards common goals even just in cooking together.
@Nurse Bethany women were treated much worse then than they are today. i enjoy the simplicity of older times, but not society for reasons other than women
I just have to say that you have the most relaxing videos when you cook Justine! From the crisp cooking noises to your deliberate and careful behavior with the open fire and the knives, everything about you calms. I dub you “Most Soothing Internet Couple.” Take your award and go forth my children!
I was just about to comment something similar. I haven’t a clue why but for whatever reasons I find these videos extremely relaxing an I can just tune out. Everything from the imagery down to the different noises and sounds. It all just works for me ya know…
Nowadays our lives are fast paced and we're always in a rush to do things that we forgot how to slow down and smell the roses. I absolutely love this couple for the way they help and appreciate each other.
I agree 100%!! Even though I'm a vegan & so would never eat most of these dishes, I find these videos SOOOOO relaxing! And Justine & Ron are such a beautiful couple, it's wonderful to see how in love with each other they are 💖💖
How crazy! My great grandmother was born in 1924 so she's turning 100 years old soon. For her it was closer that way of living. She used to make her own cheese, own corn bread and tortillas. Everything came from the land and she had 12 children with not running water or electricity. I really admire the power of women in those times
@meelany-thats hysterical that you described your family, and it’s your great-grandmama. That’s exactly my family, but it was my Mama, and 12 kids! Lol! We lived on a farm, we made our own butter, jams jellies, buttermilk, fresh milk. We had a giant garden, grew all the vegetables and canned them for winter, or froze some, too. We made syrups, pie fillings and berries. We had an orchard for all the fruits. We had turkeys, chickens and pigs, cows and horses. With that many people to feed, if we didn’t do it that way, we would’ve starved! With my parents, all the kids, an occasional uncle or aunt, and whatever friends my sibs had that were homeless at the time, we fed everyone! What a wonderful way to live! Mama would have been 106 this past March! I miss her so much, and I miss that farm every day.
This is my kind of Valentines Day. No commercialization. Just people doing nice gestures for each other as a show of affection. Nothing says I love you like making an effort to let someone know that they are appreciated. 💘
As a child I was a voracious reader and read all of the Little House on the Prairie books in second grade. It was sooo thrilling for me. Watching your videos brings me the same feeling.
I feel the same, my sis was even named Laura! We loved the books and anything Little House! Even our First Communion Dresses were LHOTP Inspired, flower crowns and all! Such a beautiful, organic time!!!
You guys are so incredibly sweet together... Ron & Justine our 1820’s Romeo and Juliet! Justine, your entire array of Valentine’s treats looks fabulous and I’m sure they taste absolutely delicious! ♥️👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
They are incredibly sweet together ❤ I just wonder why you picked Romeo and Juliet? Theirs ended in death; before they even started. I'm sorry, I'm truly not being mean about it; just curious
What I notice most is they are so polite to each other saying please, thank you and your welcome. If all married couples would be so respectful I doubt if there would be so many divorces.
And to think the last two generations coming up have a lot of disrespect and self-entitlement. After the new age of being your own self and breaking boundaries. We've got a lot of people that don't even know how to share, compromise or think more of the other spouse than themselves at times. Purely selfish and self-centered nowadays. It's more like what can you give me
Good heavens, you are eating like KINGS because Justine is a treasure!!! Also, this is such an informative AND relaxing channel! Thank you both so very much (and Happiest Valentine's Day)!
Wow. One can tell that cooking like this takes a lot of time and effort, but you make it look so peaceful and easy! 👏🏼 And the meal sure looked delicious ❤️
Yemekleri bu kadar zevkle özenle yapmak sevgi ve beceri gerektirir üstelik modern bir alet yok ama her şey düzenli kullanışlı temiz görünüyor tencerenin dışı çok temiz
Any food prepared and cooked over an open fire tastes great! What a fabulous meal. Valentine's Day in 1820 was certainly not a hardship! Thank you both so much for the tutorial!
Which would then make you - what - 5 years old? Yeah, that would be super. I couldn’t even make a popsicle choice at 5. Also love this channel & this couple!
Actually not a Hallmark Holiday. Saint Valentine (Italian: San Valentino; Latin: Valentinus) was a 3rd-century Roman saint, commemorated in Western Christianity on February 14 and in Eastern Orthodoxy on July 6. From the High Middle Ages, his Saints' Day has been associated with a tradition of courtly love. He is also a patron saint of Terni, epilepsy and beekeepers.[2][3] Saint Valentine was a clergyman - either a priest or a bishop - in the Roman Empire who ministered to persecuted Christians.[4] He was martyred and his body buried at a Christian cemetery on the Via Flaminia on February 14, which has been observed as the Feast of Saint Valentine (Saint Valentine's Day) since at least the eighth century.[5] He was beheaded for marrying couples when it was against the law back then. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. ... When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death
I call it a hallmark holiday too. I refuse to celebrate it. My husband and I had both been married to cheating, lying "people " who treated us like scrap all year and used Valentine's day as a way to make up for cheating, lying, and abuse. When we met and decided we were going to be together, my one stipulation was that we never celebrate the hallmark holiday, but show each other love throughout the year. 22 years and going strong!!
Those pork steaks and the mushrooms are making my mouth water....and cooked over an open flame. No wonder Ron hardly breaths when he eats. The dinner and the deserts look fabulous.
I absolutely am in love with this channel. The food, the pace of of life and long before the trappings of today's world...what a wonderful time. Keep it going!!! Not sure about anyone else but I find this to be very calming
I found this channel because I was searching “frontier cooking” and I’ve been binging these videos!! I’m just thoroughly impressed!! These videos are really amazing. How did you learn all this?!! It makes me sad that now at 35 I’m trying to research and learn about basic things like cooking on a fire, sewing, preserving, growing food, and all that. Survival is becoming a lost skill. I watch a lot of homesteading channels but I’ve never been more impressed or inspired than after watching your videos. I wish so greatly we could go back to living like this. Our society makes it very difficult. It feels like a trap. Anyhow, I love your content and not only the history it teaches, but the story it tells. I also love that on the other channel you have talks that are about the “real life” aspect of what you’re doing. Just really super neat and I’m a permanent fan now!!!
The cabin looks so cozy and beautiful I love all the cookware back then all the food looks amazing I’m a retired baker I’m going for the apricot tart my favorite and my comment on what Ron made you was a carved heart with your names I was so excited to see what he made you but I would have never guessed a cookie cutter I love it and everything else great video all looks amazing! 💞💞
The food looks delicious. I love the little heart cakes. Justine you sure can cook in the fireplace. Happy Belated Valentine's day. I can't hardly wait to see the bedroom
@@Ace-ke7fq I can see your point about it, but to help you out why I wouldn't mind this is because of the how the food is cooked and seeing how history grew at that time. Our books and videos may teach us, but experiencing it first hand during that time will help me understand why some things are best off being left behind. I still see your point about the word helpless, it is a true word during that time
Being slightly under 5 ft tall I feel her pain about reaching the pot. Eventually you get tired of asking for help and you just climb everything to get what you need, including shelves at the grocery store lol. Also, watching pies being made is so nostalgic for me. I was always in the kitchen with my grandma, helping her cook. She would lay down the base crust, then give me a butter knife to cut off the extra (which either went into the top crust, or was baked later with butter, sugar, and cinnamon on top. Then she showed me how to pinch and crimp nice patterns on the edges. My favorite memories from childhood are the ones I have with her.
The camera work is incredible your both doing such a great job and you love each other so much lm so happy you found each other you were raised by amazing people and l can’t wait to see your future unfold your going to make spectacular parents this is a true love story thank you for sharing this incredible journey hugs and prayers xox
Yes. That's going to be their bedroom. They won't have to go through the hassle of moving table and chairs out of the way, and putting down and picking up their straw mattress anymore, once the room is finished, and Ron makes a wooden bed and a linen chest for the bedroom.
I hope Ron is doing something useful! he seems to be in only one scene per video! just saying. maybe he's the cameraman, videographer behind the scenes guy! .
Sweetie that looks amazing I would feel soooo honored to meet you and your hubby some day you have both won your way into my heart and many more I am sure. I truly love you both and your videos. God Bless
My 1st comment on your channel ever: So glad I found it yesterday, love everything you share. This is an amazing Vday treat, everything is so beautiful
You 2 are the cutest for real, I just love watching how you cook Justine and Ron is always so eager to help the love between you guy’s is so genuine. Everything looked so delicious, and the deserts beautiful job I give you so much credit Justine . You put so much care and love in to it , I know that you both had an awesome Valentine’s Day bless you both.
I love all your videos! You only learn so much in history through elementary, middle and high school but seeing how people lived back in Early America is awesome!
That historical cabin y'all built is cute. And thank you soooooo much for sharing the cooking, the 18th/19th century off grid life style, and putting so much love and effort in your videos. God bless you both. I mean that from the heart.
Happy Valentines Day Justine & Ron! WOW what an awesome meal! Lots of work went into that meal! Thanks for the receipts to! Blessings from Bethlehem, NH.
Loving your entertaining videos! The interactions are so cute. The goodies and food look so yummy. You folks eat very well. 😁 The cabin is so homey and adorable. Now onto the eating and conversing...
What a lovely meal, even better when you shared the preparation.. very romantic kids! ( lol I’m old and loving it) I find it so interesting that even though all the meals are very straightforward ( no fancy stuff like we have today ) it’s still looks so tasty and it’s certainly much more complicated than the way we cook today. From keeping a fire going to managing the heavy cast iron without spilling ash everywhere or dropping the lid etc. very very satisfying to watch.
I don't think most people celebrated this holiday. Not in my neck of woods anyway. But I did find a handmade valentine in my mother's things from Depression Era. I know however, that it was recognized or you would not be depicting it. Thanks. I ❤️ all your videos.
Valentine's day is an oldddddd holiday. By the 18th century it was very similar to what it is today, couples giving out flowers, sweets, gifts, cards. By the 19th century it was the norm. It's actually over 1,000 years old and originated as a Christian feast day honoring one or two early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine.
There are multiple sources citing Valentines Day celebrations and poems going back waaayy long ago. Not sure where you are from that would not celebrate a popular holiday.
Valentine's Day is an old feast day. During the Reformation many feast days were either socially prohibited or downright outlawed (IE Christmas Day in England), so possibly this is why it wasn't celebrated much where you're from if you come from a very strict protestant culture (German Lutheran, Calvinism, Baptist). The late Victorians revived many traditions with a definite secular twist (once again Christmas and Valentine's). As Justine and Ron are in French America, it is a Catholic culture where is would have been celebrated.
I could almost smell all the aromas while watching this super calm lady put together a feast with all the aplomb of a short order cook; everything cooked perfectly and ready at the same time. After cooking 60 years, I still haven’t mastered that. And all of it accomplished in such a small space! Amazing!
This channel was on my suggested video playlist so while my interest in period videos are nominal at best, I am obsessed with your channel. I binge watched this weekend and managed to watch every video except three. Soooooo good. Plus there’s still all those videos from your other channel. #excited
I just LOVE your channel! I’m an old soul born in the wrong era!! Thank you for the videos and original recipes…I have been saving them to try out this summer !!
What if, you took your wet red heart that you just painted, and stamped it on white butcher paper to make clever wrapping paper? I bet you already thought of this. And all I am doing is sitting on my couch watching you do stuff and enjoying it thoroughly! Thank you for your great videos. Much love from Carlsbad, California.
What a feast! I am salivating and I want some! I love your show, and I lived off grid for 20 years. You make it look very easy and you are both awesome. Love is the only way, thankyou and God bless
You know, I reaIIy have to admire how you've been abIe to master the art of cooking over a fire Iike that. I mean, I used to be quite good at manipuIating my way around a camping stove and even keep a marshmaIIow on the stick Iong enough for it to turn bIack, but I don't think I'd be haIf as adept as you (guys) are with this hearth cooking. Bravo.💞
You got me in trouble for Valentine’s Day. After watching you cook I just knew my wife would love to have a 13-1/2 inch cast iron frying pan. Well, not as much as I thought. I guess I’d better call and cancel the crew coming out to put in a fireplace. Lol. Joking aside, I did get the pan for me, used it last night and it cooked a hamburger stew magnificently. Now off to the store to get some pork steaks and mushrooms. The tarts look fantastic. Unfortunately my kids eat all kinds of fruit but will not eat jams or jellies. God Bless and keep up the good work.
Your videos are heavenly 😍 thank you for your hard work and making it seem so easy, I know it wasn't but at the same time, people then didn't have the stressors that we have in modern times. God Bless You!
I had to watch this again, you two are so sweet ❤️ together. I appreciate you teaching and sharing the ways of the early days. I cant wait to see your next videos!
I remember my mum telling me to crush all my egg shells into tiny little bits because if I didn’t the Witches of Salem would use them as boats to come across the ocean to kidnap us!😳😬
My Mum always told me to crush eggshells so the witches couldn't use them to sail in them to sink ships. I'm in Scotland and I do this just in case. How fascinating to hear the same tale from America.
There still are people choosing this life in the world. If I were young again I believe I would go way off grid a make a go of it. No stress very hard work but so rewarding and way healthier. Thank you loved it. Happy Valentine’s 💚🌹
I don't know whether they're common in the USA but here in the UK we have 6 packs of jam and curd tarts just like that and its so easy to eat the lot on the drive home from the shop! 🤭
Amazing and sweet that he found the time out of editing and uploading videos. To learn how to write your name on a piece of parchment ❤️ In all seriousness, just found the channel and really enjoying the cooking!
A lot of l💗ve goes into baking all those wonderful little treats! I bet he loves all those tasty treats you took time to prepare them! It's good old fashioned baking that today's busy life doesn't allow many to do.
Lovely video! It brings you back into your body like a good meditation to watch you prepare and cook your food! Thank you for capturing and sharing the essence of everyday living in our early American history!
It looks like you're finally getting your bedroom added on now. I noticed that when you called for Ron to help you get the little pot down, and he came into the main room, from working on it. It will be so much nicer to not have to move the table out of the way every night, and then have to move it back every morning, and nice to not have those straw mattresses on the floor. Then you can have a proper wooden bed, chest for clothes, etc.
I did love this video, though the amount of sugar I saw, I can only imagine would've cost this couple back then an extraordinary amount of money. A very expensive and romantic meal indeed!
