I really like Practical Magic. It's fun. The book is very different. It's about the two daughters. I like that the movie added suspense and romance. Didn't know there was a sequel in the works.
The two of you are saltier than you’ve been in a long time. Casual brutal asides. Nick calling a director “shite” and Joseph on Ms Hudson’s acting talent . . . and I’m only a third of the way through! Dishes on pause so I can savour the snide.
As movie lovers, I feel like we’re so used to people giving BS boot-licking reviews that it’s really refreshing to hear someone be brutally honest about these films!
I lol when you all get to the "what would you give this movie?" for subpar films. Nick is "I SAID WHAT I SAID". And Joseph gives a spoonful of sugar to help the one star go down.
idgaf I love Practical Magic! it's not aspiring to greatness, or even logic, it's just a cute 90s girlpower witchiness lite movie. like a disney channel original movie but works for an adult audience and has hollywood star power behind it. funny enough I have read the novel and would count the movie as the rare instance where I liked the movie much better than the book. yall made me laugh though!
can you share the oatmeal chocolate chip cookie recipe, nick? the only hero story for a woman in a hollywood film even to this day, is to become a wife, a mother, have a stable career where she is "respected", own a car and own a home. any other life is loser-ville. meanwhile them same folks in real life are living with those checkboxes checked and are miserable by forcing those things into their lives...which ends up creating misery for so many generations. (note: not like men aren't checking off the same miserable list.). but let's make another 1000 movies about it, where we can hear the lead actress state without question how her film, the story she is telling and her acting is empowering all us women.
I watched Practical Magic for the first time this month as well and I was surprised that it has such a large fan base. The film’s plot felt very disjointed and I thought the witchcraft would be more integral to the story. It was more like a standard romcom with a supernatural backdrop.
Definitely can understand being disappointed if the expectation was that this was a horror film! I have good memories of Practical Magic from seeing it as a teen in 98'. It's a a light, fun, and sweet romcom with some spookiness like Hocus Pocus. Sandra and Nicole look gorgeous in this :)
Stick to your guns Joseph. Smile 2 is better than The Substance for the reasons you mentioned. I know Margaret Qualley is the internet's girlfriend but she doesn't do it for me. Demi carried that film. As far as message, I am more compelled by Smile 2 dealing with mental illness and the pressures of being successful. The substance beats the one message over your head for too long, it's an old ass message and it comes up a bit empty in the end (that took forever to come).
I felt personally responded to with that comment about "The Substance" as that was exact question when you said you liked Smile 2...l legit only said "What about The Substance". I straight away went to amend my comment to sway away from my identifiable comment.
I feel proud to say that the last TP movie I watched was the second “Why did I get married”. It’s a one-sided beef, but I can’t stand that man for some reason 😂
