My great grandfather was a French soldier in that war. He's buried with his wife just outside the St. Boniface cathedral in the the city of Winnipeg Canada. His name was Francois Muller.
Ce que j'ai répondu a un mec qui disait un peu comme toi. "Certes, les uniformes et les armes ne sont pas parfaites et alors ? Se n'est pas le plus important" En fait c'est le contraire, les uniformes et les armes sont bien, les décors aussi. On a même un court sur le tir au Chassepot, les amateur du genre devraient etre satisfaits. Les scènes d'action sont honnetes. Mais il n'y a rien de vrai, de réaliste ou de vivant. Juste des mecs qui se déguisent et jouent un rôle dans un contexte historique. La rigueur historique n'est pas dans un pauvre bouton de manche. Quand le mec dit "Le front" alors je réponds que c'est consternant de tomber dans un piège aussi grossier. La notion de front date de octobre-novembre 1914 quand les tranchés figent la ligne de feu en un "front" continu. Si l'excuse est "il faut un terme que le grand public comprenne" alors pourquoi diable se casser les noix a faire un film "historique" ? Donc quand il dit "nous sommes coincés derrière les lignes ennemies" cela n'a pas de sens, donc ne colle pas a 1870. De plus de nombreux soldats avaient été dépassés par l'armée prussienne et s'étaient cachés dans les forets et villages isolés et harcelaient l'envahisseur en tant que "Franc Tireurs" Le discours sur la désertion, le traitement des prisonniers et la cour martiale sonne plus 1914-18 que 1870 Mise en scène qui est une projection sentimentaliste contemporaine d'un homme du XXIe. Très pauvre en paroles, en actions, en bruits généraux, sans aucun naturel, ce genre de soupe est servi a la louche dans tous les courts métrages historiques, il suffi de changer le costume, la mise en scène et le jeu d'acteur sont toujours les mêmes. L'annonce du caporal de déserter est ridicule, les autres écoutent sans réagir, pas de surprise d'étonnement, l'un traite juste de lâche avec une voix bien posée, et la scène fini dans le même calme soporifique qu'a son début. Pareil après la rencontre avec les prussiens au coin du mur. Les gars ont flingué 4 ou 5 gugus et pas une montée d'adrénaline, juste un cri au début de l'action, une fois tout le monde mort, y compris le blessé achevé d'une balle dans la tete, le mec a sa petite voix pour dire que l'armée est pas loin, tranquille... Aucun naturel, c'est fou comme le jeu des acteurs et la mise en scène rend les personnages aussi peu naturels. "Ils méritent d'être encourager plutôt que dénigrer comme cela !" Bah, il y a beaucoup de boulot, a part des beaux décors et des beaux costumes il n'ont pas grand chose pour eux... Il faut juste qu'il changent leur direction artistique et ne cherchent plus a faire du "devoir de mémoire" ou ce genre d'approche de l'Histoire.
@@BFVK Les armes ne sont pas bien: c'est le système Chassepot, d'accord, mais un seul d'entre eux est un fusil d'infanterie (3:54 appuyé contre le mur). Les autres ont un garde-main raccourci, comme s'ils avaient été transformés en fusils de chasse après la guerre. Vous ne pouvez pas y fixer une baïonnette là. Aucun Chassepot aux mains des soldats français en 1870 ne ressemblait à ceux-là. Cela dit, j'ai bien aimé le film, et les fusils ne sont pas si importants. Mais dire que "les armes sont bien" ... ce n'est pas vrai

I hate these images distortions that have nothing original besides perpetuating some preconceived notion such as greyish scenes for the Middle Ages or yellowish for outside Europe. This is why Versailles series looks so stunning, there isn't such bullshit.
@@DielsonSales There is a point. Of course, I can agree that distortion of color is a negative aspect, but in my point of view, it is the most efficient way to connect with the audience. Unlike seeing something in real life, through a movie (especially about war), you can't show the sense of danger, the horrible smell and sanitation, the uncomfortableness (wet shoes, stained faces) and the only way available to show these are through visual aspects. That is why some sort of distortion is necessary to connect with the audience more efficiently.

Thanks so much. I did actually learned a bit of French for two years, but it is hard to track up with the real frenchmen speaking so fast. Now I understand and noticed, this short film compacted the reality of the Franco-Prussian War very well, into a short and small film. This small platoon actually represents the whole French situation.

I feel bad for those patrolling soldiers who were simply trying to take their injured friend back. They were having a fond and happy time, finally getting far from the war's front lines and the next moment only to be only killed by French soldiers who are unknowingly stranded beyond the lines without hint of a way back, trying to survive on their end.
Excellent !!! Il n'y a rien à dire, à part bravo. En quelques minutes on retrouve le contexte des troupes françaises dans la campagne de 1870 (Manque de cartes, armement, etc) tout en gardant un bon rythme, une histoire vraisemblable et du suspens. Il faut passer au long métrage !
The French were so over confident for this they did not issue any maps of France to the soldiers, only maps of Germany. Of course it did not end well for them.
Oooh faux faux et encore faux. Napoléon III savait que l'armée était plus capable de tenir une guerre moderne. Des réformes étaient d'ailleurs en vigueur mais trop tard. En 1866. Il savait que si guerre il y aurait, elle serait presque impossible à gagner mais vu la quasi humiliation que les français ont vécu avec la dépêche, il a pensé qu'il n'avait pas d'autre choix que de déclarer la guerre. La guerre que voulait Bismarck, il a eu. Napoléon III a été le jouet de Bismarck et ça nous a coûté. Bref commentaire archi faux.
@@demonorse Ooh, false false and false again. Napoleon III knew that the army was no longer capable of sustaining a modern war. Vigourous reforms were attempted but it was too late. In 1866, he know that if war were to break out, it would be almost impossible to win but given the scale of the diplomatic humiliation that the French suffered, he thought that there was no other choice but to declare war. The war that Bismark wanted, he got. Napoleon III was the pawn of Bismark and that sunk us. In short, very wrong commentary.
@@tonys9397 The French lost and it opened some serious questions about the nations readiness and their leadership, so it's only notmal they didn't want to dig much into it. But I find it weird that Nazi Germany didn't produce any films set in 1870, considering the propaganda value such films would have been likely to have. May be they prodiuce some and I never knew. The only film I remember havi9ng seen that was set in the Fraco-Prussian War of 1970/71 was a 1936 Soviet film titled "Pyshka", based on Maupasant's story "Boule de suif".
It was a massive conflict, but we don't get to see... It's a shame, but that war is my biggest interest and I am grateful that RU-vid at least has one video (film) related to it.

Susciter la curiosité et l'intérêt, et surtout de rappeler ce que fut cette guerre Franco-Prussienne de 1870-1871 et toutes les victimes qui ont payé le prix fort de la bêtise, de l'égo, de l'ignorance et du manque d'humanité de beaucoup de politiciens et hauts gradés de cette époque. Et le courage et l'abnégation de beaucoup d'entre-deux. C'est à mon avis aussi un hommage à tous ceux qui ont perdu la vie et ont souffert. Se souvenir !
Pourquoi les gens sont si méchants avec ce cour métrage ? Certes, les uniformes et les armes ne sont pas parfaites et alors ? Se n'est pas le plus important, ils ont fait cela avec un budget réduit et avec plein de bonnes volontés ! Cela m'écoeure que les gens sont aussi négatifs alors que se film est bien foutu et asser realiste ! C'est dommage que tout le monde s'arrête à des petits détails tel que le type d'armes et l'uniforme ! Ils méritent d'être encourager plutôt que dénigrer comme cela !

Beau travail, et une vraie "puissance d'évocation". Le jeu sobre et intériorisé (fataliste ?) des acteurs le rend encore plus crédible. Comme le suggèrent certains, il serait intéressant de voir un ensemble de cette qualité développer ses idées davantage. Quant aux détails de la reconstitution historique, c'est vrai que ça compte, et que ça alimente la crédibilité. Mais il me semble qu'ils s'en sortent assez bien. Pourraient-ils aller plus loin avec un financement par souscription comme je l'ai vu dans d'autres cas ? Il faut encourager les bonnes initiatives.
C'est une épopeé d'histoire qu'il vaut bien étudier. La guerre Franco-Prusse a mis en marche l'histoire triste du siècle XX en l'Europe. It's an era of history well worth studying. The Franco-Prussian war set the sad history of 20th Century Europe into motion.

The one soldier (officer?) told the others he was going to desert and surrender to the Prussians. The Prussians treated prisoners well and he didn't want to die. He realized they were too far away from French forces.

Bonjour. Je trouve ce court métrage très bien. On y voit le principal ce qui est une armée en déroute complétement perdue et désorganisée. Pour les fusils, il y avait le chassepot ( long) effectivement mais aussi les premiers chassepots, les mousquetons et encore dans certains régiments de ligne de vieux fusils de réforme. Le chassepot à la culasse courbé deviendra ensuite le fusil Gras en 1874 avec la première cartouche métallique. Mais il y a eu effectivement beaucoup de variante du chassepot et de transformation par la suite puisque jusqu'en 1914 nous retrouverons des fusils Chassepot modifié Gras. Félicitation à vous. Les remarques sont toujours constructive quand elles restent bienveillante.

@Muzzle Flash Pretty easy, they did make about 4 000 000 of them. I happen to have a chassepot myself. Mine has come a long long way from its original form. It started out as and 1868 production gendarme version (with the turned down bolt) and was then converted around 1878 into a Gras rifle, then at some point after that, it was bored out and turned into a 12 bore shotgun. According to my uncle who I got it from it came to the UK as ballast in a sailing vessel, probably around the turn of the century.

I don´t speak goof french, but apparently you liked the realism. Maybe you would like "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford". I think it is even more accurate realism, somewhat same epoch. (I always suspect the gun accuracy of war/western films)
@@texwiller4029 Actually he said the realism of the weapons used is unimportant: the acting is. The rifles used here are of the right system (Chessepot) as used by the French Army in 1870. BUT it's been pointed out that all but 1 of them (the one with the fixed bayonet) have been converted for civilian by shortening the handguard among other things. It's like filming a WW2 movie areming the German soldiers with Mauser action sporting rifles. Well, Mr. Mailhot says that's not important. What matters is the acting and camera work, and these work well. And I agree with him, adding that the settings and atmosphere are very good too.

"The good, the bad & the ugly" aimed at ENTERTAINING, and such is one the most entertaining westerns ever. There's hardly a dull momnet in it's 3 hour long runtime. But comparing it with films like 1870 or "Le jeune Karl Marx" is like comparing apples and oranges: it's just pointless.
I actually liked this short film. Yes the costumes and weapons, etc. are not accurate but watch it for what it is. I usually tear apart historically based films especially ones that supposedly try to accurately depict a period in which I'm interested. The Franco-Prussian War is a fascinating period in History, but here in the U.S. very few people seem to be aware of it or care about it. The only other film I know of that depicts the War of 1870/71 is Champ d'honneur (Field of Honor - 1987) which I have on VHS, sadly it is only available in VHS and Laserdisc. I really like that movie. Part of me wishes someone would make another good, large production movie of this period, but then who knows what kind of crap it will end up being. Just noticed Field of Honor is listed in the thumbnails, gotta go!!
Probably because 1870 has reasons for World War 1, the French wanted the land back they lost for this war. If too many know about this war this it would appear that Germany was not at fault for World War 1 but the French. Meaning the USA joined the wrong side or should have just stayed out of it.
In the first scene, I heard the familiar word "cadastre". In Russian, it means an inventory of land holdings. So it was a map or something similar, I supposed. Judging by the ragged uniforms, they were soldiers of the 101st regiment or company - I don't know what - who got lost and fell behind their own people. Now they have a map and can probably find their way to their own. In the table scene, I made out one familiar word "dessert". Judging by it, the speaker was ordering the others to desert. He was a commander, so his decision applied to everyone. However, he was not approved, one of the soldiers left. In addition to these words, I recognized the words "cartouche" and "fusil", which did not give me anything. But the two previous words allowed me to understand the whole movie. Then I had read the English translation in a comment section. I was surprised to realize that I hadn't misunderstood the plot so badly. Two words are basically enough to understand this movie.

@@TheAngrySaxon1 Most of the other Europeans are learning English anyway. The funny thing is, however, that they are sometimes very hard to understand. As a German I find it astonishing how many of my countrymen have a hard time to pronounce the »th« correctly. Isn't that difficult after all. On the other hand, Italians, French and Spanish are often reluctant to speak English and have a heavy accent when they do. For me, English is the common denominator most people can agree upon. But every language has its inherent beauty, funny proverbs and interesting grammatical solutions. If time wouldn't be such a scarce resource, I would love to speak even more foreign languages than I actually do. We are lucky enough to live in a time where we can travel that much and visit other countries that easy instead of having to shoot each other.

Très joli, mais en réalité on s'est fait défoncer, pas comme en 1940 où on s'était bien battu, mais 1870 est une cuisante défaite où on a été battu assez facilement. Cependant, rien n'empêche de montrer le courage francais, dont nous faisons preuve depuis plus de 1000 ans.
Je vois des choses similaires à cette vidéo lorsque je regarde la guerre de 1870-1871 en tant qu'étranger. Les soldats français sont très durs et courageux, essayant d'empêcher le siège, mais ils sont détruits malgré leurs efforts surhumains. C'est juste triste.

Je suis costumier spécialisé militaire, j'ai la chance d'intervenir sur de très gros films français et européens. Les uniformes souffrent de beaucoup d'approximations ( boots Décathlon, boutons de musiciens, molletières fantaisistes, fausses tuniques à double boutonnage, cols jonquilles hilarants, etc). Cela est un travail d'amateur mais la dramaturgie est bonne et comme certains internautes le soulignent la vérité du soldat est là. J'espère que vous trouverez des financements pour vous épanouir sur des projets plus ambitieux. Au plaisir

Mais ceux ci ont des dimensions que j'ai, peut être un peu ironiquement, jugé "hilarantes". Mais je répète que la dramaturgie est excellente et c'est cela qu'il faut souligner; ensuite des professionnels, cela se trouve.

Je n'avance pas caché et mon seul but est de faire progresser ce jeune réalisateur dont la dramaturgie et la vérité du soldat sont, je le répète, remarquables; et c'est bien là l'essentiel. Je suis le costumier militaire, entre autres films, du "J'accuse" de Roman Polanski qui va sortir d'ici quelques semaines. Ce qui fait que j'ai un certain regard sur cette époque de 1870 fort complexe au demeurant et très peu traitée. Je suis aussi conscient que, mes collègues comme moi même, faisons inévitablement quelques erreurs malgré nos moyens. Cela est dû à un certains nombre de facteurs qu'il serait trop long ici d'exposer. Mais, en tout cas en ce qui me concerne, j'essaye à chaque projet de minimiser cette marge d'erreur, c'est même mon "dada"!, même si je sais que l'erreur 0 est impossible à atteindre.
