In furniture history, we generally think of France for provincial furniture not only because this country was so important during the traditional timeline when furniture was occurring at the height of its art, but because this country has so many different culturally distinct regions which left very special marks on furniture history.
French country furniture implies the use of solid wood, and not veneer, but sometimes this term country or provincial is applied to pieces which are not rustic at all and which are in fact qualified as regional masterpieces from very sought after workshops in major cities of a given region.
The umbrella term “provincial” applies to all pieces made outside of Paris and this video presents a panel of different emblematic provincial period pieces which reveal the diversity and the beauty of this class of furniture.
Many thanks to all viewers,
Cole

Wow ! This is soooo enlightening. Thank you for filling in the missing gaps, but this is only making me want more ! I never understood how so many different styles of French furniture received a rather petite umbrella like "Provincial". I just started making up my own, although albeit blind, terminology or classification just because i felt disappointed with the lack of proper titles or classification. The French cabinet makers were so incredibly talented on so many different levels. Art movements and philosophies such as the Baroque and Rococo mixed with attributes from other cultures all helped, but i still wonder why there isn't more. Another wonder for me was the terminology from Thomas Chippendale's Directory where he classified one of the styles as Modern, which was all based on the New French craze that later became known as Rococo. The Directory sketches look like they were copies of the furniture already in France...but there doesn't seem anything in the history of what inspired this creative inspiration. The silhouette, the embellishments, such strong expressing's. So much history... So much creativity... So little time ! I'll stop here and just say this...Thank you Professor for such a beautiful lesson ❣

Great information. Is there anyway you can make a video about specific designs and characteristics for the regions of France. It is easy to compare pieces if there are examples available, unfortunately many country pieces not fully documented or attributed to a specific region. Either way, thank you for your contribution to our collective knowledge.

Thank you ! I really wanted to convey visually the value of this art form which is often too quickly written off as “country furniture” … I encountered too many people who misunderstood the subject and that inspired me to defend and explain some of these excellent regional works as real works of art.
