I'm working on a robe a la francaise, for the Dutch Elfia fantasy fair in April. It was honestly so much easier to make than I expected! I've never even made a jacket or any other historical clothing, and it was totally doable. Might have been even easier to make with your pattern, but I guess that's a bit too late now ;)

what brand of disappearing ink pen do you use? I've been using chalk and soap to mark my patterns out, but have been looking at getting a disappearing ink pen; I'm just not sure which brand works the best. Thank you.

Was this dress worn for every day wear, not just for Balls . If so would middle class and working women wore this when it was still fashionable and can it be made of printed cotton and wool?
@AmericanDuchess1
@AmericanDuchess1 4 года назад
yep, it was everyday wear. You got it - sacques of printed cotton , wool, and linen were worn by all classes.

How does cane compare to standard plastic boning when using it in pocket hoops? Is cane stronger?
@AmericanDuchess1
@AmericanDuchess1 6 лет назад
Case is stronger and lighter. It's easily shaped and easy to cut. The plastic boning does work for smaller hoops and items - just be sure to get the really big, 1/2" wide zip ties and double them in the channels if necessary.
@fancierthangreen
@fancierthangreen 5 лет назад
I'm currently suffering from flimsy panier. They're just not holding up my dress. I've used zip ties but they're for sure not strong enough. Should I bother had more or switch straight to cane?

how much yardage do you need for a robe a la francaise?

For a matching gown and pettticoat I recommend at least 10 yards

Ok so I don’t know exactly what you mean by “Cane” I’m assuming it’s the sort of thing you’d use for basket weaving? Is there a more specific term I should google? I’m starting up my sacque under stuff! I got both patterns and I’m so excited! This video was very helpful!
@AmericanDuchess1
@AmericanDuchess1 3 года назад
yep, like the stuff used for basket weaving. More commonly referred to as reed, but in the 18th c. they were two different things. Here's our source - corsetmaking.com/costume-reed.html

Do you wear a chemise with sleeves or sleeveless because the arms look snug.
@AmericanDuchess1
@AmericanDuchess1 2 года назад
a chemise with sleeves, yes, but they can't be too full if the gown sleeves are tight

Hi, I have just purchased your book and Simplicity pattern 8578, which will be my first foray into historical costume making. I am looking forward to it! Just a quick question about scalloped pinking shears. Is there a preferred size for the scallop on the blade? I seem to be able to get the scallop in a three sizes - 3mm, 5mm or 7mm (not sure what that would be in inches - sorry!).
@AmericanDuchess1
@AmericanDuchess1 4 года назад
Hi! The size of the pinking scallop is up to you - all of them will work and look great. In the 18th century the pinking irons also came in many different sizes, so there isn't one correct size. Just make sure they're specifically for cutting fabric and not just paper (I learned this one the hard way)

How do you guys go about preventing fraying with so many trims with raw edges? I was planning on making this with tafetta but it frays like no tomorrow. Does silk taffeta not fray like other tafettas?
@AmericanDuchess1
@AmericanDuchess1 4 года назад
That's right, good quality silk taffeta is very tightly woven and doesn't fray much or at all when pinked. Other silks indeed will.

Abby- You are very passionate and energetic, but I think you should consider how often you interrupt your friend. I found it hard to get through this because of how often you talked over her and interjected into what she was saying. You can see her frustration and giving up at some points. It’s not pleasant to watch. Please try to let her finish before you interject. I wanted to hear her speak.
