This episode, we’ll be taking a look at Caverna, considered by some to be the consummate worker placement game. It provides variability, has stood the test of time, and comes in at a moderate weight. And by weight, I’m not referring to the game’s complexity, I mean this game physically weighs about seven pounds. That’s a lot of game packed into this box. And where some may see that as being quite an accomplishment of game production, I see it as a challenge! How can we make Caverna even heavier? Well, let’s take a look at some component upgrades that will not only improve the game’s organization and eye candy, but will also pack on the pounds.

What about the gems?? I replaced mine with cut and polished rubies. You should be able to find enough for only $600 or so. I saved a few dollars by buying mine at the same time I upgraded the bits in my copy of Diamonds.

Finally managed to get my hands on a Broken Token insert (specifically one for Scythe) because while I'm not going to pay import taxes on one, they were sharing a booth with a retailer at UKGE. Looking forward to making that game take sufficiently little time to set up thanks to that that I don't feel compelled to only get it out if I think I'll be able to get a couple of games of it in before putting it away again.

Nice video Chaz! Although you seem to have missed the most obvious upgrade... actual meeples instead of the round discs. I've played with a set that includes the mum, dad and child meeples and it was simple but really enhanced the game for me!

I love upgrading game components (looking at you, Stone Age), but I think the components in Caverna are of a great quality. The only thing I upgraded in Caverna was to remove the dinky first player pawn and replace it with a large, yellow pawn that Ii painted myself.

Out of curiosity, how well do the other upgrades interact with (ie. fit in) the Broken Token upgrade?

They could. But Cave vs Cave suffers from providing only one of each type for the player, and a track to count your supply. So for CvC, just having 10 physical pieces of stone is better than moving a single stone up and down the track. Since CvC has supply limits as part of the rules (max 19 gold, max 9 for everything else) It meant buying 20 (or 40) of everything. photos.app.goo.gl/gP62td9E0FAStDp53 The original pieces are in the lower center of the box. Everything else came from The Game Crafter.

What you really need to upgrade is your camera ;D And don't forget to pick one where you can disable auto-focus.

Actually, thanks in large part to PoDP's supporters and some side projects, a long-awaited camera upgrade is finally on the way! :D (And, yes, I made sure that the new camera will have a manual focus option.)

Hey Chaz, I am curious, I am a hobbyist board designer and I noticed you found a few building alternatives to what comes with Caverna. Have you ever found a pack of "Settlers" villages (not the cites that look more like churches) in bulk? I have found a brand that give all sorts of wooden pieces on Amazon, but when you count out the number of each individual component, it only has two villages per package. Please let me know if you are familiar with any alternative - short of buying a used game like Kingdom Builder.

Yeah, that is one component that's hard to find good replacements for without breaking either the theme, bank, or both. The closest is getting some furniture button plugs that kinda look like a wide stemmed mushroom or a hut with a domed top. A bit easy to grasp, but depending on how grainy or toned they are you might need to prime them before painting the desired color (though with caverna you can get away with just clear coating one color if you don't mind that much color variance between your naturals). Of course, the other caveat is that you have to paint or dye them yourself. Game Crafter and Print and Play productions both have their own sets of buildings, but you'll have to go plastic if you don't want to use the Catan Settlements that they provide. Also, GC has a big turn around time and PNPP requires a minimum 12 dollar order before they can even process the order. So, yeah, dunno why it's so hard to find board game sized houses outside of pillaging them from thrift store games (and good luck with that too with them not being that prevalent)

Kinda, but I dunno if you really need to have color different components for Barns/Sheds. (only played Agricola 2nd edition once). I can see how you can do a single color shed for each player while not breaking it (each player takes the proper amount originally and puts it aside of their playerboard)

It does not have to be an upgrade component for Agricola or Caverna specifically. I am just looking for bulk wooden villages to use in games I am designing. Fantasy Flight has these package, www.amazon.com/dp/1616610344/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=IN7UEDPTYJCYD&colid=TY2R57DBVRIM , but they only have a few houses. There is a whole lot of houses in the Kingdom Builder game . www.amazon.com/Queen-Games-QUG60833-Kingdom-Builder/dp/B005COHOM6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496279731&sr=8-1&keywords=kingdom+builder But if I like a game, I don't want to remove the pieces. I found some very cool huts and towers from World of Warcraft Monopoly: www.amazon.com/dp/B0079PC0EI/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=I18UYUCI5K4LIH&colid=TY2R57DBVRIM And, they have stackable buildings in Zynga Cityville Monopoly www.amazon.com/dp/B009ERZD6G/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=IR2DK8BBI90GK&colid=TY2R57DBVRIM but I would not be able to use either Monopoly sets in my own games as they are proprietary components from Hasbro. Unless I am wrong, the wooden villages are not proprietary.

This video was just wrong on so many levels. I get the need for a proper inlay and sleeves and I totally agree that those coins are a super sweet addition to the imersion of this game. But why would you want to get rid of perfectly fine wooden tokens in favor of that crudely painted plastic shit, that looks like it was spray painted by Chinese kids in a sweat shop? And how are human cities from various cultures, as well as industrial buildings, supposed to be a thematic fit for dwarfen buildings? This is just utter and complete rubbish and in no way, shape or form an improvement on the existing components
