Note: my analyses left out sound character description of the Sutherland KC Vibe: warm realistic tone, no coloration, clear and smooth high frequencies compared to the Pro-Ject s2 Ultra which presents more of a shimmering high end signature with lots of detail but less warmth.

Just got a KC Vibe. Coming from a Project Tube Box DS w/Genalex Gold Lion 12ax7s and running a MP200. The Vibe is a KILLER phono stage. I think I hit near perfect synergy with the rest of my system by adding it...

Great video! Really opens my eyes to things! I am using a shiit mani II on my Yamaha PX3 bc it has a moving coil on it! I may use this on my upgraded cartridge on my Technics SL 1600MKII

Great video L. We are in similar stages of our journey and oddly enough the KC Vibe MKII is on on my short list. I am waiting for it to come back in stock at one of my trusted vendors. Any longer term comments on living with the Pro-Ject X1 for a while now? I recall you mentioned that, in your space, it sounded better to you then the X2... I am wondering that since the moonstone was a lower output cart than the Olympia (when both tables were bone stock) if the Vibe would have changed the outcome there. Thanks man.

I only ever used the amethyst on both tables . I had the Renier on the x1 for a very short time and moved the amethyst to the x2 so hard to answer your question but I will say the low output amethyst works best with the KC vibe set at 45 db. You’d think it would need more gain but anymore just sounds too loud and in your face . For me that was the sweet spot .

.. if you’re in the US , Upscale Audio has the KC in stock . They ship free and are a great company.

I’ve upgraded, over the past few years, from using the built in phono stage of my Yamaha CR-1020 receiver, to an entry level ProJect model, to the MoFi StudioPhono, to my current unit, the Sutherland KC Vibe mk2. It think it sounds magnificent, with my Technics SL-1800, fitted with a MM AT-540ML. The relative lack of background noise, especially since my home electric is questionable at best, has been the biggest improvement. I’ve read on various “audiophile” sites such as Audiogon, where many people grouse about it’s lack of adequate headroom, especially with MC carts, but maybe I just don’t know any better. 🤷🏻‍♂️

You hear correctly. I do not hear headroom issues with the KC. Amazing piece of gear to my ears. Cheers.

I just purchased a TZ Vibe for my Clearaudio Concept TT with Satisfy Carbon Tonearm that I just mounted a new Goldring Elite MC cartridge in. I am very interested in how this is going to preform. I was using a Parasound XRM phono stage but with the new Goldring cartridge it sounded slightly... flat and a bit...2 dimensional.

@@joeythedime1838 well I reviewed the KC Vibe which is a little different but Id say you're rather safe and wise choosing a Sutherland. It gives you plenty of settings to experiment with and the circuitry doesn't add unwanted color to recordings in my opinion.

He's referring to to a phono preamp when he says external phono stage.

There is so much echo in your room, just going by the audio here. I honestly think you'd better off treating the room, even a bit, than in going farther down the phono-stage hole. Or do that in addition to it, as there's no way you're going to get an adequate sense for what that gear can do with a slap-echo/reverb like that.
@bigmacfullerton7870
@bigmacfullerton7870 2 месяца назад
It’s not a hole. You just go buy the phono stage of your choice and presto… better sound
@TheFibtastic

@@bigmacfullerton7870 Except if your have horrible acoustics, there's no point, just buy the cheapest one because your room is going to sound like a big echo chamber until you do something to tame the reflections.

Do I see your phono pre on power amp😮😮😮
@lifebed4
@lifebed4 Год назад
Yup. All the ventilation on the power amp is exposed. the space under the phonostage is solid and unvented, leaving a perfect space for the Sutherland. Maybe not the way a purist would set up but it gives me no problems and leaves far less a footprint than the Rotel Preamp which BTW is designed to stack on top of the Rotel Amp.
@tomislavgasparic8100
@tomislavgasparic8100 Год назад
@@lifebed4 but phono stage must be located as far as possible from big power transformers, and closest to turnutable. Big transformer, even low radiation toroid one is source of interference, power amp itself is problem, there are big current modulation sources.
@lifebed4
@lifebed4 Год назад
Must? I tried placing it on all three shelves and I got the quietest delivery where it now sits. I just let my ears decide. One shelf higher on top of the Rotel Pre is a maybe but that wont make much difference in terms of proximity to power. @@tomislavgasparic8100

Also interesting that fairly high end integrated power amps contain a built in phonostage. Worth noting. Makes you wonder what is marketing and what is science.@@tomislavgasparic8100

@@lifebed4 You mentioned that you're experiencing hum w/the Sutherland. Were you getting hum w/your built in phono stage as well? You shouldn't be getting hum at all. Have you tried taking the phono amp off the top of your power amp? My 1st guess is the power amp's transformer's close proximity to your phono amp is creating the hum issue. Try getting the phono amp as far away from the power amp as possible to resolve the issue.
