Some matches become more meaningful with time. The Naomi Osaka-Angelique Kerber opening-round meeting at the 2017 US Open is certainly one of those such encounters.
Not quite a changing of the guard, it nonetheless brought together the defending champion, Kerber, and the following year's champ, Osaka. The unseeded challenger, 19 years of age at the time, ended the German's title defense in clinical fashion in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
It was Osaka's first career Top-10 win, and provided a glimpse into the world-beating talent of the Japanese-talent that would soon see her crowned queen in New York, and within 17 months, claim the world No. 1 ranking, after she followed up her 2018 US Open triumph with another trophy at the 2019 Australian Open.
Kerber, meanwhile, recovered beautifully from her first-round stumble and an overall down year in 2017, which saw the former world No. 1 drop to No. 19 by year's end. At the first three majors of 2018, she reached the Australian Open semifinals and the French Open quarters, before winning her third career Slam at Wimbledon.

These opening round matches at the US Tennis Center are great. The crowd are real tennis fans, respectful and knowledgeable. The vibe is so relaxed. Then by the final the crowd is all 1%ers from Long Island, and celebrities, and rude crazies.

I really like the commentary here from the australian announcer. She gives actual strategy and tennis insights. Like how she compared two of Naomi's coach's other students Alicia Molik and Sam Stousr would work patterns to set up their powerful forehands and how Naomi should set up cross courts in order to get an opening to go up the line as both her forehand AND backhand are weapons. It's insights like this that make announcers worth their salt.

This was the match that really made me take notice of Naomi. While she did make some noise at the AO a year prior, this was her message to the field IMO. To totally dismantle the defending champ Angie like that was incredible.

@@deepakmahajan170 I think she wants to win but could not fully commit to tennis. After winning her 1st 2 GSs, she departed with her coach who helped her ascend to the top of tennis. She did that in a disrespectful and ungrateful way due to over-confidence and completely overestimated herself. Credit her, she rebounded and won her 3rd and 4th GSs Afterward, associated herself with the wrong people. Those people are at the border of being normal/criminals. I am sure if she associated herself with that kind of people when growing up, she would not even become a professional tennis player.

The beginnings of a superstar in the making. I believe a lot of tennis fans knew that Naomi was going to make a huge splash and become the next dominator. She wields that racket like a sword dealing one deadly blow after another..tiring and out maneuvering her opponent. Her ancient heritage and the power it carries for a 1000 generations coursing through her veins. Love Naomi's outfit... Pharrell did a great job designing the Adidas outfits for that year. Even though this isn't really much of an exciting match, it shows where Naomi was at a year before winning the title a year later. A player very much in development who was already dangerous to play against. In many ways, in 2017 Angie was having the year that Naomi had in 2019 - both were a bit lost in the wilderness, feeling the pressure of having such a great previous year.

Naomi should stay a citizen of Japan. She can be a moral supporter of BLM in order to please her father. Among the ten or so past Grand Slam tournament younger champions, three newer women stand out and appear to be near unstoppable: Iga Swiatek,Sofia Kenin and Naomi Osaka. Simone Halep may have won Grand Slams before, but with her irritably gentle style of play, these three powerful and accurate players will likely stop Simone in her tracks in an earlier round of Grand Slams... ** So ,in my opinion, the Big Three of tennis have burst into the limelight of Grand Slams. Within months and years of having a new boyfriend,a few women like Simone (or Naomi) end up having enlarged and heavy chests. This impedes her tennis playing abilities. Simone's 40 year old boyfriend should pay for her recent breast reduction surgery. Despite Simone's wins, her style of play is too gentle and too boring. She could be part of the BIG FOUR of Women's tennis, along with the three other women mentioned above.. Angel Kerber and Muguruza and Caroline Wozniaski and Victoria Azarenka or someone else could be part of the Fig Four , depending on which four women win more Grand Slams more often, and stand out as being near unstoppable in womens tennis tournaments. When ladies tennis players suffer in playing abilities because of chest enlargement, the boyfriend should be fined, such as 42 year old boyfriend of Halep, a much married man.
