Here is early comic recording artist Dan W. Quinn singing the classic "Ain't That A Shame" recorded on July 18, 1901 on a scarce 7-inch Eldridge Johnson Victor Record from my collection. The record is played on my 1901 top wind Victor Type A Talking Machine. Early 7 inch recordings on this label are generally found worn and noisy but I was pleased to have found this example to be in fine playing condition 110 years later. Thanks for stopping in for a visit and I hope that you enjoy this early comic recording.

You are correct, it is absolutely amazing to find one of those early Pre-Dog Johnson Records in that sort of incredible audible condition, and have it be "Ain't Dat a Shame" is even more amazing, that song was the immediate precursor of "Bill Bailey Won't you Please Come Home", but of Course Bill Bailey had much more staying power then this one. Thanks for sharing. Victrolaman

Good record, Doug. I do treasure my very modest collection of old 7-inch records and will get more as soon as I'm finished work on my time machine! Imagine the expression on the record clerk's face when I barge into the shop announcing, "Hi, I'm from the year 2011 and I'm here to get a copy of everything in stock." :)

You would think the record would be eaten up by the weight of the needle digging into it!

@RCALennon Thanks. I've always enjoyed playing, listening and watching these primitive top wind phnographs too.

Hello from 2020! Got directed here from "Streets of Cairo." I was so worried that Fats Domino's version wasn't original when I saw this title. Glad it's a completely different song. Great to hear the _oldies._ :)

Think the title was just vernacular slang. A lot of ragtime and coon songs and later on blues songs used vernacular slang as their titles.

@EdisonSquirrel Thanks for the great comments Rocky! Ah....a time machine...wouldn't that be a wonderful invention. Let me know when you have yours done - I want to go back to that time too! : )

@VTMCompany Thanks VTMC. You are so right. It's very awkward to try to hold the camera with right hand and position the needle left handed. And as you mention there's very little room on the rim of most of these early 7 inch records.

This was way before Fats Domino did with the same title, and different lyrics.

Nise record and machine. I know that some early Johnson Pre Dog records were mastered on Edison brown wax (melted and made into a disc master). right after Johnson abandoned the old acid-etched zinc process.

@EdisonSquirrel When you do get that time machine, go back to 1903/04 and get every 14" Victor you can lay your hands on. (I have one and it cost quite a chunk of change to get it.) The go back to about January 1901 and aks the dealer for any "TEN INCH RECORD" copies. Between the two types, you can retire in comfort. A few Caruso blue Zonophones would help too.

I would suggest buying every 1901 Victor Deluxe Phonograph could find in the stores. I have only seen one in all my years of collecting encompassing over 56 years! LOL

@MusicBoxBoy And I don't understand why both Edison and Columbia released cylinders with little-to-no room at the start of the record.
