Middle rocker is air start. The starting lever moves an eccentric which either engages the starting or the fuel injection rocker: Lever down: start-lever up: injection system engaged, engine running. Fuel injection rocker is barely visible since hidden in the clip by the camshaft.

the men who designed and built that engine must have been very proud of their achievement at the time, and rightly so.....an engine like this was to the industrial revolution what einstein's theory of relativity was to physics at the same time

The engine is running on air blast. The fourth rocker is not visible on this videoclip, it is hidden between camshaft and cylinder head. Lift of injection needle is about 1 mm, this is the reason why you hardly see it lift. Look closely at 5:56. Injection timing is -5/+35 degrees crankshaft rotation. This protracted injection of fuel over 40 degrees is one of the reasons why these engines run so smoothly.
@arska6383
@arska6383 Год назад
An even when looking for the lifting of the injection needle at correct time, one must be understand that it is moving upwards instead of downwards like the intake and exhaust valves. If looking for downwards moving, one misses it.

It looks like it can run like this for years! those low-rpm diesels are amazing machines!

I saw the middle cam follower and said "Ha it has VTEC" and then I thought about what I just said and realized this was a multiple ton diesel engine.

This video shows that there is nothing new in this world. Roller rockers..... Great video!

The air compressor-being a specific feature of the Graz built engines- is not driven by links from the connecting rod as in the original MAN design, but rather by belt from a large pulley between engine and flywheel. Since the bottles are difficult to keep tight for months, the air compressor is driven by an electric motor (=cheating). The installation however allows to take off the belt to the motor and connect the compressor to the engine by belt the same way it was set up in 1904.

Kind of ironic that a German engine is driving a British dynamo when you consider it was built 10 years before World War One.

Amazing machine...I noticed by one of the step plates that it had a built in indicator for measuring performance and diagnosing problems..

I think the middle rocker is a compression release. the roller rockers are cool! the cam is as big as the crank on most modern cars...

it is where all machines began i think.....1904 nice date to remember during its time maybe its expensive for and today it maybe out of date but still its more expensive i think this machine needs a birthday for its 100years of service

Very few i.c. engines run sweeter than a well adjusted blast injection diesel built after 1902 or so. No reason to commit suicide. You should read Lyle Cummins History of the Diesel Engine.

Four cam lobes. From left: intake, starting valve-disengaged when running, air blast needle -rocker arm hidden by camshaft, exhaust.
@dieselfritz
@dieselfritz 12 лет назад
What you hear is a recording loop: noise in the foreground is intake air, remotely you hear the ding of the compressor first stage intake valve. Otherwise the engine is very quiet, somewhat like a steam engine.

@partsproduction No:" Diesel´s engine from conception to 1918". A bible for those interested in the early air blast engines. Possibly out of print but available from Amazon. By now there are more videos on these engines on youtube: MAN airblast diesel/MAN Einblasediesel/MAN DM 12

Well, it wouldn't normally because the engine's internal air pump would take over. But in this case, as the guy who posted this video said, the belt which drives it has been disconnected from the engine.

They ought to cut out the starting air compressor once the thing is started; its sound is very dischordant compared to the diesel itself.

I think the second oldest is at Internal Fire and they also have a replicar of the oldest (I think!) Yours is prety much identical to those though. Just a quick question. Someone made a coment that the air equiptment should be stopped once running but doesn't the engine relly on this for Air Blast? All the best, Phill.

Is the engine running with solid injection instead of blast injection, the injection valve do not seem to be operated, many blast injection diesel engines were converted from blast injection to solid injection later, because of high pressure danger and the old unreliable system.
