1912 Otis Elevator first run since 1989!

This is a smooth running machine, with minor work required. Built in 1912, this 3 phase, 7.5 HP unit served in an apartment building until 1989 when the owners sold, and the building closed due to a depressed economy. Though some repairs and additions are needed, there is not reason this can't be re-certified. A customer wanted me to see if I could get the elevator going in this mostly abandoned building running, in order to demonstrate it was still usable, and repairable. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS! I am experienced, qualified, and insured. I know what I am doing. For the Karen mechanics outs there: this elevator has been removed from service until it is inspected, and was only powered up for this demonstration only. Go complain elsewhere about bathing in floor dry and hydraulic oil in a dirty pit instead...
Enjoy!

What most surprised me is that the elevator could find each floor by itself. I used to run a 1927 elevator in a 12-story building in Los Angeles but I had an up/down lever to make the car move. I had to bring the lever back to neutral with the correct timing to get the elevator to stop level at the desired floor.

Those are the manually controlled ones. Some newer manuals could level on their own if they were close enough to the landing, but then there are the ones that are just like the one you used to run.

That elevator is in better shape than the walls around it

WOW this is amazing! Something that is built today won't be around in 2112. Pure American pride right here.

That thing's beautiful & runs flawlessly! It seems to be even better than that psych hospital you did. Surprised it's in this good of condition. I've seen active elevators this age in much worse condition.

You got yourself a new subscriber! I’m in Eastern Ohio not too far from Pittsburgh. I might get to see cool parts of buildings I’ve been in.

I work in a three-story building originally built as a hospital in 1926. Otis has upgraded and maintains our elevator.

This elevator was built like a tank running like a Swiss watch installed 111 yrs ago still has the original winding drum machine, floor relays/selector. I used to work near an office building in N. CA which had a bird cage Otis manually operated elevator, winding drum DC rectifier installed around 1908. It was preserved as an historic part of the building. I did get to see an Otis winding drum machine room in an historic mansion in the PNW which is now a museum still in service, COP and call buttons. DC rectifier in the floor relay controller.

So you're saying this elevator hasn't moved since I've been born? And it still works that well wow. It truly would be a shame if it had to be removed. But it is certainly costly and out of compliance for many things I'm sure. I'm leaving a gaping hole for some thing modern right up the building.

The last time this unit moved was 1989, when the apartment building went out of business, and sold. The guy who bought it in the early 2000s put a new roof on it, which is the only reason this unit is saveable. Thankfully, according to the state inspector, it needs a few safety improvements, and a weight test, along with a laundry lists of repairs to make, and it is certifiable. It is going to stay this way, since there is no practical way to install a new one in the shaft.

So was that temporary service installed just for the elevator test or was that there for some basic lights and tapped into temporaryly? Had a feeling we were going towards a digital phase converter when it was mentioned to be 3 phase. Interesting more or less that's all it took and some general maintenance. It must've been well cared for.

The temp. service was installed for lighting so work could be done i the building... I took it a step farther...
