1920's Brass Spray Pump Restoration

I wish I was born in the time when tools were well made, from good quality materials. I saw this spray pump & although being a simple tool, I could see the beauty lying beneath the tarnished brass. In today's throw away society, to manufacturer something like this spray pump would be prohibitive and pointless. This pump is manufactured by the Deming Company in Salem Ohio. It is their "Perfect Success" Bucket Spray Pump. Typically used for garden work but is also versatile to spray and clean any number of household tasks. An item from a very different time to now.
Anyway, follow along as I give this thing some loving! Thanks for watching!

Wow, I am 80 years old and that's the first time I have seen one of those. Great restoration indeed and it works. Ken

I'm so happy that channels like these have appeared, focused on restoration. This is preservation of the old, and it's very important. In several cases in my path from hobby to a marginal side job in machining and similar, many times i have drawn inspiration or have been helped by old books, old items, and old in general. There's a lot of things we've "forgotten" or laid to the side, and in some cases, for no good reason. So kudos to you, the Hand Tool Rescue channel, and any other channels that follow the vein. With RU-vid's issues, this kind of video content might, hopefully, attract good numbers.

As someone from Ohio, I must say it’s nice to see a tool that was not only made in Ohio but also a part of my life. My grandfather still uses one to water his vegetables garden. Thank you for the memories and amazing job. You have shown me a way to restore his!!

Splendid job restoring the brass sprayer. It looks much better and it works like a charm too. Excellent work.

My Dad worked at Deming's for 38 years. They shut down the Salem plant in the early 2000's. Damn shame. By the time he retired they one of the foremost pump manufacturers in the world. Great to see this piece of history restored. Thank you, Will.

Fantastic! I grew up in Salem, Ohio acrss the street from the Deming family. The historical society has a display of Deming's pumps. I do not recall the small pump like because they were known for the large gov. Contract pumps. You have restored it to museum quality. This Christmas when I am back in Salem I will need to visit that display again

Will, nice job mate saving a well built tool. Something most companies today lack, If not made in the US or England chances are it stays on the shelf. That's not to say one doesn't have a lot of stuff that if it breaks or strips out... all is not lost. That's a keeper for sure....

Great video! To cut hose off hose fittings I fasten the hose just under half way in a vise, cut the top of the hose lengthwise then refasten the vice all the way so that the fitting will pop out of the vice by breaking through the weakened cut area. For high pressure fittings I'll use a hacksaw to make a diagonal cut toward the nut through the collar but the extraction is the same.

9:13 Tbh I love that atmosphere: You look out of a rectangular - horizontal window, you see a small hill all covered in grass, further away on the hill there is a highway leading to some european sea city which is on the right, you can barely hear the still, plain sound of the highway, it's sunny, quiet, the sky is clear, nobody wants you to do anything, you have a lot of time, occasionally a cat walks in, there are no annoying sounds of family or neighbors, just you, the garage and a squeaking noise in the ears you got from working with a loud machine... This whole video is well made, without unnecessary music or voice commentary, just original audio. That's what I like Also, ignore what I said earlier, I'm just saving this when I come back later

Nice work mate. I restore a lot of brass lamps and I’ll give you a tip. Paint any brass you want to restore with tomato ketchup ( not tomato sauce) , let it sit for 20-30 minutes and you will be amazed at result. Then just rinse off with water. Finish of with brasso. Cheers

Thought it was a bilge pump for a boat at first. They REALLY don't make things like they used to. Restored, it will last another hundred years now! But why not reuse the original hose clamps for historical accuracy?

just restored a REGA pump myself, while the overall construction is the same, I notice some distinct differences 2:56 the outlet on the body of mine is female and the handle is doesn't have that skeletal design and the handle also lacks a logo Would be interested if there was some way of determining the age or more model information to compare designs
