These points probably didn't need to be super sharp when launch from a atlatl dart thrower which produced a huge amount of energy. I fully agree the thicker cross section made them strong enough to penetrate bison antiquus. Bison antiquus was larger than our present day bison, perhaps 25% larger. Lithics Casting Lab does a fantastic job making those castings. I have around 40 or more castings from them, all paleo period. Just amazing that Pete has had the great opportunity to physically hold, cast and photograph some of these rare artifacts. Both you and Pete are true masters of bringing this history to us all...Thanks Guys!
It will be interesting to see when you make these in stone with the same flaking as in the castings whether the edge is actually sharper than indicated by the castings.
Focus Danielson, the yellow square is useless! Thanks for the info. Consistent edge flaking can be difficult to achieve. My flake style is more of an inconsistent flake scar pattern.
Fantastic analysis The tiger flood of southwestern Wyoming and northwestern Colorado is amazing material to work My guess is they may have even heat treated that specific piece to give it the high gloss although not necessary to always heat treat the tiger flint it's amazing material to work.
I can’t think of a single time that I picked up an artifact that was as sharp as fresh broken stone. That may be the reason the castings are dull. That would be especially true when finding them in water and streams, verses found in an excavation!
The casts came with a description. Here's a quote: "Eden points were first discovered in Yuma County, Colorado blow- outs during the 1930's but none were found in situ until the spring of 1940 when Harold J. Cook spent several days digging in a site discovered by O. M. Finley. The Eden point was named by H. M. Wormington after the town of Eden, Wyoming. The Eden type site was named the Finley site in honor of O. M. Finley who discovered it."
You say same point two different styles. Kinda lays out why I find it hard to believe one style was frequented over vasts ammount a of time. There must have been a lot of pride tied to the origins of each style of point to keep a knapper from saying “this will do for now”. Taking time which is precious, to learn to produce the desired results over and again, insinuating specialization, and connection to other specialized workers. The tribe must have worked like a well oiled machine.
really enjoy seeing these things up close , very cool . if these are from kill sites then perhaps the action of hitting ribs and hide dulled the edge so saying they made it dull is an unfair analysis in my opinion
@@KnapperJackCrafty the sharper they are and the more little thin sharp grabby bits there are when new , the more chance they are dulled by hitting ribs or a shoulder . any stone point can be dulled quite significantly during even single use but some miss anything hard and come out in good shape . there is clear impact damage and basal crushing evident on your examples but you seem to disregard the possibility of edge damage on the same artefacts from known kill sites . sure they could equally have made them dull and thus minimise the risk of dulling during use , but this also minimises the risk to the animal being hunted with less chance of severing major blood vessels . i think it is more likely these were made slightly sharper 8000 years ago than they appear today and that being thrown into dense hide and bone is likely to remove some of the sharp edge . there may be edens out there that were lost before use with a very sharp edge that you have not seen or handled, just like i have not seen or handled your casts . i know you reckon that the flaking style is not conducive to sharpness but i think that means that you cant get them sharp and achieve the same aesthetic . not that i would expect you to , these were made by people who made nothing but these and were taught by people who made nothing but these so perhaps they could make em sharper than the ones you have handled or made
