The Witte Engine Works created their first functional internal combustion engine in 1886 and went on to refine various small engines for agricultural and light industrial use. One of their more popular series of engines is referred to as a hit and miss engine, which typically ran accessories through belt drive. This particular model from the 1920s ran a water pump on an upstate New York farm until the 1970's, which maintained proper water levels for a livestock water trough.
Although Rudolf Diesel is most widely known for his advancement in the ignition-less internal combustion engine, better known as a Diesel engine, he was also the pioneer of the hit and miss engine. These became wildly popular in America as the rural farmer benefitted greatly from a small engine that could provide power for a number of varied tasks. From ice cream churners, to sawmills, water pumps, log splitters, generators and more... these engines helped to democratize industrial and agricultural needs across a remote North American landscape throughout the late 19th and early 20th century.
