Here we show Ivan's 1926 GP Salmson which he journeyed all the way to Portugal to purchase. These are very rare cars, and Ivan has always wanted his own due to his father being a Salmson racing mechanic before WW1. Watch as we highlight original features of the car, and explain which jobs are yet to be done as part of the restoration process.

I learned a lot today about a car I'd never heard of. What a well made film and all without the annoying Rock or House music. Superb!

What a wonderful storyteller! It's obvious what a joyful labor this is to him, and it's marvelous that he was able to find a Salmson that was relatively unmolested as well as lightly owned. I feel that fate is rewarding him for a life well-lived, and I so appreciate the videographer and editor for crafting such a sensitive and watchable piece. The Salmson and Ivan's knowledge & recollections are the show, as it should be. Cheers, and thank you for giving this day a bright beginning!

So happy he was able to find such car and work on it remembering of his youth and his dad. What a great story

Dear Ivan I was really touched when you produced your dad's Salmson valve tool. So much old stuff just gets binned these days because of the throwaway society we live in. I'm just a little bit younger than you and my dad died when I was 18 months old so obviously I don't remember him. But he was a great bookworm and I do have a few of his books which is my own way of remembering him. Thanks for a lovely video.

What a beautiful emotional connection this man has with with this car. It's wonderful to see his pleasure with the simplest of things, such as the sound the valve cover made when you just set it on the motor, and his delight to discover that he did indeed have the same steering wheel as his dad's car had. Oh, and the valve-tool with his dad's number on it, and finally being able to actually use that too the same way his dad did. Incredible human story. =)

Discovered you today while I was searching the depths of RU-vid. What an interesting, enthusiastic and knowledgeable gentleman! I’m working through all of your videos posted so far. Takes me back to my time as a pump attendant/odd job boy at the local garage as a 13 year old in 1970. The owner had been working on cars since before WW2 and would always repair or manufacture parts if it was possible. Can’t wait for more. 👍🏻👍🏻

Read somewhere that Salmson sub-contracted very little indeed and this included making their own magnetos. Did this arise as a means of ensuring quality control on the aero engine side which was carried over to the cars? One of the effects of World War One was to deny the products of Bosch etc. to France. This led de Dion to take up magneto manufacture. Whatever the reason, Salmon were far from being the ''assembler of other people's bits''' characteristic of this market sector.

Im amazed by these things from a time when the metalurgy wasnt up to snuff, so they had to ludicrously overbuild things or get creative to make parts durable enough .. Like the old 30s Harley Davidson boardtrack racers, they didnt have exhaust valves up to snuff, so what they did was bore a hole in the exhaust port directly to atmosphere so the valve wouldnt overheat and melt, plus the added effect was a blast of red flame just right next to the rider's calf lol .. You had to be half mad or half idiotic to ride those things in period - probably a bit of both!
@paulhitchcock9760

Enormous gap between these twin cam Salmsons and the power units found in "yer avrage" light car of the time. Incidentally I think Salmsons, along with Hispano-Suiza and the original Bugatti company, never made a left hand drive car. Says everything really.
@Ragnar8504

Well, before WWII quite a few European countries had RHD cars so there was a much larger market for them than today. The oddest exception was Sweden, where they drove on the left-hand side of the road in LHD cars until 1967.
