My paternal grandparents were the "wealthiest" in their neighborhood during the Great Depression since they owned their home which was hand built by my great grandfather. Also my grandfather kept his job as a butcher at Armours Meat Co. allowing him to bring home any cast off meat and bones. My grandmother kept a kettle of stew on the stove for anyone who was hungry. Homeless people were allowed to come in, wash up, nap in a real bed, eat and move on. My dad said he would come home from school and find total strangers in his bed and others at the kitchen table. He grew up to become part of the next Great Generation. Oh if only we could practise such great morals and manners again.
@@ariesforever5260 and that is the saddest part of this flu bug,I read stories of people helping people and animals . Like you said that is where lots will draw the line. I travel 65 kilometers each way to work, I will think three times now about stopping for hitchhiking. God bless,,🙏 for the people, happy Wednesday, be careful out there.
I was born in 1932. My grandfather who raised me, lost his job in the bank, his money, his home. everything. He was very intelligent. He made bargains with those who owned vacant city lots and planted vegetables, sharecropping with the owners. I remember when I was six years old working in those gardens picking up stones for a penny a bucket, learning my first lesson about work and reward. I was raised that way. Yes! I was also sometimes lazy and did not work, but I had learned that it was necessary to work if one wanted money. I always worked with my grand father in his vegetable gardens and later he became a landscape gardener and I worked at that also. During winter, we got upat4AM and shoveled the driveways and walkways of the rich people before I went to school. When I was not needed by grandpa I would hike a ride 20 miles to a golf course and caddy all day til evening and hitch a ride back home, I mowed seven lawns each week for a dollar each. Our house never went hungry. Thank GOD!
Everyone erasing history because it “offends” them will be the reason these things happen again. There will be nothing to learn from when they are through.
Well, now in 2023, I am thinking similar thoughts......100 yrs ago, stock market rising & people investing, but lots of ups & downs with it!! Plus, all types of food shortages the past couple of years, our money becoming questionable, and on & on!! Some keep predicting that next crash!! Stay tuned!?
My grandmother, who lived during The Great Depression, buried quart-sized, glass Mason jars full of peaches in her back yard. I found those peaches after I purchased the house.
@larzuga1 Jeff Madrick's Twitter account has been suspended, it goes to show how desperate they are trying to keep this information from the rest of us.
Why? You believe in propaganda, forced indoctrination, ... maybe forced conversions also. Because you have convinced yourself you are right. That's how the Nazis started :)
This was the world my parents grew up in. One thing I know, you could not get my parents to put a nickel in the Wall Street casino. I grew up hearing about these horrific times and I never forgot. WWII is what it took to pull America out of the Great Depression. Sad history. I hope others heed this lesson that history will never forget. :(
After my dad sold his house I tried to talk him into investing in Wall Street years ago and he said he would never do that having experienced the Great Depression. Then came the 2008 crash. I learned a lesson.
And now we are probably entering another depression. Look at commercial real estate, look at rental rates in major cities, look at the prospects of our currency, and the violence in the past eight months in several American cities. November 2020.
This is sad. But people nowadays are so different instead of coming together, they will fight each other and chaos will be everywhere. I hope people are preparing because this is here apoun us once again.
It is year 2019 and it looks like history repeats itself. Something bigger than this crash is coming. And most of the public is clueless about it. All they care about is that if they have new type of Iphone. God bless everyone who is awake!
Tomáš Kot god bless you too!!! It’s getting a amped up quickly. I’m trying to prepare as much as possible. It saddens me to see how many ppl will not listen or do their own research. They always tell me that they said the economy is the best it’s ever been. I’m like “ they said the same thing before the depression”. Difference this time is we have the choice of knowledge and knowing things in our hands and you refuse to see that the economy is gone. And the recession is here. And things are going to be a lot worse.
Thank you for uploading this. It's one of the better and more helpful documentaries I've seen. It's always nice to learn something new and see things from some different perspectives.
I had to laugh when i heard the lyrics “prosparity is just aroung the corner” “What we’d like to know is which corner, we’ve turned so many corners now we’re dizzy” ab On a serious note, watching this in 2020 when every one keeps saying everything is “better than expected” with the economy and the V shaped recovery on stocks, have we learned nothing

Despite what others think and have commented the United States is not alone in having homelessness, virtually every country on earth has, to a greater or lesser degree, has a homeless situation/crisis, some are there through choice, but the vast majority are there because politicians and the financial masters won’t use the overwhelming wealth that they control to eliminate or at least vastly reduce the problem, instead they allow overburdened and underfunded welfare systems (where the exist), charitable organisations, and individuals to deal with the issue, Roosevelt was absolutely right in his actions and beliefs that the rich and powerful don’t know or, more likely, don’t want to know, about poverty and its effect on lives, most people in poverty don’t live, they just exist. If the top 1% off the wealthy gave 1% of their wealth to a independent agency (a new agency created specifically to deal with homelessness/poverty) the whole world crisis could be eradicated, not overnight but over an extended period, but the worlds wealthy, and through that wealth, powerful individuals think that, or want to think, that those homeless/poverty stricken people brought it upon themselves, either through poor financial choices or by not working hard enough, pure snobbery and class divide is still prevalent and in some cases worse than in the past, social media, the media and online information is out there for all to see the truth, but the rich and powerful (for the most part) don’t care and treat people they might come across as subhuman and deride them for being poor/homeless. If the governments of the world spent less on arms and armies and more on welfare systems/home building for the deprived, but again the rich and powerful influence how the political leaders act and use the national treasury, those individuals own or are involved with the armaments industry, and through lobbyists, personal interference and, I will say this plainly, BLACKMAIL, and politicians believe that by listening to or carrying out the wealthy individuals desires they can have what they desire the most, POWER, and retain that power once they have it. Ok, soapbox put away, tirade over, and my personal opinions written, and if those opinions offend anyone then they must be either wealthy, powerful, or both, and a fair amount of idiocy thrown in for good measure, so if you are offended then all I can say is “DILLIGAF” about your opinions and “SNAFU” again with “FUBAR” is still the order of the day. Thanks for reading my speech and HAVE A NICE DAY, unlike those unfortunate to be in poverty/homeless who WILL NOT HAVE A NICE DAY, OR LIFE, unless the rich and powerful wake up and see clearly that they are the problem, not those who can’t help themselves or have lost the will to help themselves. Thanks again. 🤬😢☹️🇬🇧🏴

How is it repeating itself? Explain please. People are living better than ever before. People are living in $300,000.00 dollar homes and they don’t bat an eye at paying 40 grand for a car. @@gabemendoza1052 I don’t think interest rates will ever go up. Inflation has made money not worth anything anymore. But you are right though. Loans are floating these people. As long as they can borrow it they don’t care what it cost.
Holy smoke, they present FDR as some god that saved the world. In fact, his policies exacerbated and lengthened the depression. I understand why since this is a French sponsored documentary. Too much for me to watch this BS any longer.
Really great video, showing the relationship Roosevelt and his wife had. They were a dinamic duo, were Roosevelt couldn’t go, Eleanor was there to help him out, they worked really great together.
The diversion of industry away from consumer goods and into war production may have put people to work, but it was almost like they were working for free. The bill came when the war ended, although economic policy had matured enough by 1946 to ease the transition to peace. Stiglitz's statement that the idea of war to stimulate the economy was "nonsense" is factually correct. War time production might have defeated the enemy, but it's butter, not guns, that creates true economic growth.
Well they all played the role but I 100% get what you saying. But check this out. Notice how war has become an idea of a form of business since that time. Meaning that war is in some of these politicians economic agenda. If your child dies at war then that's one less mouth to feed. If you he/she is overseas the need for home resources are not needed. That means you dont need a job on US soil. They also figured that war production would create jobs outside of service enlistment. Its all crazy when you put it together.
Yeah, that happened too. It was a hard time for a lot of folks. Mostly because people thought the good times would never end. Kept them from being frugal, saving, etc. Then disaster struck and many weren’t prepared
If you didn't have a job how would you feed your family? Bills keep coming, utilities, clothes, taxes, etc.. Just imagine if you lost a years wages, could you make it? Then just imagine if you lost wages 4 yrs. in a row and you had to borrow the money to pay for everything it costs to plant each yrs. crop? A farmer has to pay first just to see if he or she is going to have a chance at getting a crop to market. If we didn't have debt we could all stay warm and dry and have food to eat. Simple no job no food, dust bowl no food if you have a job. Sad story but the human population starves or dies off because of disease every once in a while. Read about our history "real history" that can be substantiated not a bible story made to fit a situation.
They provide everything BUT housing to the homeless, except for shelters not fit for animals, so they multiply like rats. Build a tiny-housing development of 2,500 apartments at 150 sq. ft. each, keep them modern and up to code, and clear out the streets. Put an Aldi in the lobby to handle SNAP. Total cost maybe 400 a month per person.
What's really crazy is we all go about our day thinking most things are stable , good or bad but stable . What we never stop to realize is that all possibilities no matter how crazy are actually possible and virtually everything happening today and whatever happens in the future has already taken place in some form in some place in history.
When A.I turns up, the powerful no longer need humans.... that's going to be the end of us as a species, maybe a few will try to control what they have created .... but will fail, likely do to arrogance and not understanding what's been created... the draw of the power will be too enticing.
I find interesting the comparison that is done between Hoover and Roossevelt, mainly from the french economist, as it shows the difference between Hoover, that was more of a "business man", and Roosvelt that was an open-minded man and when he did something and didn't went well, he learned from it and made it better. Also it was kind of easier for him to understand the point of view of the poor as he was helped by Eleanor, who was married to him, as she could see and inform to him the situation, to then find a solution.
Nobody is wondering why the farmes didn't gave away the food. Sharing with something else, for clothes for example. Unusual times for unusual actions, money was worthless so interchange for something else. Hope In this time we are not that stupid, and go to the farmes to barter.
Oil prices are low, airlines low, movie industry having its worst year in over 30 years, farmers are hurting, restraints hurting, and we can't do anything to help them till the country reopens.
Excellent video! I learned a lot about Roosevelt and his disability I had no knowledge of. Roosevelt tried to revive the banks by closing them, where the common phrase "under the mattress" comes from, and tried to fix a lot of prices.
Nothing seems to be mentioned about the Dust Bowls of the early 1930s, when the years long drought turned the soil to dust which blew away in the wind for months!!
We still don’t treat our vets well. The government doesn’t uphold it’s side of the soldier’s contract and the public forgets once the war is “over.” Yesterday Nov. 11 was Veterans Day for the public. For vets, everyday is a tsunami of memories, physical/emotional/psychological, their own personal hell of endless “veterans days.”
It's eeire to me how similar, or even worse in some aspects our current situation starts to look in 2016 to what was happening 1925-33. It's going to be a wild ride in the next 10 years...
Arthur van der Burgh Do you know how many homeless people camp in Central Park nightly? People have been regularly living in Central Park, in the caves, tunes, under the bushes, since the 1980s, just as there have been folks living on the subway steam vents in DC. When living in DC in the early 1980s, I used to pass a colony of them on a set of vents across from the White House; when we went there on a visit in 2007, there were still guys sleeping on that vent.
Absolutely! Have been thinking exact same thing all along. I won't bet on the next 10 years - timeframe is difficult to predict - but the conditions are there, all of them. Just wait for the next financial crisis.
@Thomas Headley My friend you are an optimist. The hominid is a tribal animal (small herd) possessing a viral communication mechanism (language), later further amplified by recording (writing). These features allow the flow of discoveries & complex tools from the intelligent few to the ignorant many -- who have little appreciation of the impacts while becoming entitled thru historical use of same. This same viral mechanism allows the dissemination of ideologies & misconceptions from influencers into the tribe. You now have a mad, entitled herd driving dangerous technology toward oblivion. No wonder we are in one crisis after another.
The narrator states that after his assassination attempt, Roosevelt stopped riding in open top cars. Then, in the very next scene, it shows him riding in an open top car, with Hoover, to his inaugural speech.

So right! My favorite MacArthur moment was when he abandoned his troops in the Philippines after ordering them to fight to the last. While his men contemplated their fate, he flew flew over their heads, waving as he left.
Roosevelt was a very rich man and he wasn’t very compassionate with the unprivileged ones or poor ones. Constantly his wife was the one who was the most involved with the people and the country was always waiting for them to do something and at that moment he pronounced himself about the new deal.- arenna

The Depression was not caused by Hoover, although his actions certainly made it worse, it was caused by Wall Street bankers, so was the 2008 recession and every other financial crisis we find ourselves in. The longer we focus on the wrong perpetrators the longer the real culprits get away with their crimes against our humanity. #EndTheFed
The start reminds me of camping. Millions of people love camping😕 boiling your water over a fire. Picking blackberries, walking miles for the toilet. No running water. Well not in fields anyway. Its strange how people think campings fun.
What's interesting is that the American public never took responsibility for their own part in things....overconsumption and taking out loans skin to a posi scheme. They blamed Hoover instead, who honestly didn't have anything to do with it. We still haven't learned and are swiftly approaching the same outcome.
In comparison to Hoover’s execution during the economic crisis, at least Roosevelt tried to release pressure. People really recall their trust in Roosevelt and expected that the situation would improve. As some historians said he fix prices, and restructure banks. He was capable of hearing others, even ideas that he didn’t agree with, but he was disposed to do whatever it was need for the US. He even restore confidence by giving tons of employment.
The only thing now a days we have to fear is the govt, banks, and the stock market. Keep your $ close in your houses, the interest rate suks anyway . Truth!
Unlike Hoover, Roosevelt had a more open mind and was willing to listen to other ideas. This allowed him to try different paths when a plan didn't work at first. Roosevelt also was seen quite positive, and wanted to keep the citizens positive too in different ways, encouraging them to take actions such as trusting banks again.
Mr. Fuller, I am trying to make a Mr.PotatoHead (from Toystory) for my engineering class. Do you have any recommendations of who might have a tutorial for that or would you be willing to make a tutorial for it?
Roosevelt and his wife were like a team, where Eleanor was his eyes and ears, as Roosevelt couldn't go to many places to see the conditions of the poor, so his wife went to many places where she learnt about the poor. He depended on her to work better.
I found interesting how Roosevelt was trying many things during his government period, as he was open-minded and even made some curious decisions like rising the dollar price by a lucky number, or rising the dollar price during breakfast almost every day.
And if more people realized that our money is created from thin air and our govt borrows it from the federal reserve, we might have a revolution on our hands.
My late parents explained to me what life was like during the great depression as they grew up in it. They also tried to explain the undeniable link between depression and war, but I never really got it. This documentary makes the whole situation very clear. As I type this, it is October 2018 and the markets are looking very volatile to say the least. Could we see the entire process happen all over again? Very, very scary indeed.
Yes, it's going to happen again, as all cycles repeat because human beings keep making the same stupid mistakes. The turning cycle is going to hit again. It's an 80 year cycle give or take a few years. 1780 - American revolution - hyperinflation of the continental dollar. 80 years from there - 1860 - start of the Civil War - inflation in the North and hyperinflation in the South. 80 years from there - 1940 - WW2 / Great Depression. 80 years from there - 2020. This time it will be a hyperinflation as we're completely off the gold standard again. The market definitely looks like it could crash this year. And then the dollar crash won't be far behind it.
In contrast with Hoover's execution during the monetary emergency, essentially Roosevelt attempted to deliver pressure. Individuals truly review their confidence in Roosevelt and expected that the circumstance would improve. As certain history specialists said he fix costs, and rebuild banks. He was fit for hearing others, even thoughts that he disagreed with, however he was arranged to do whatever it was need for the US. He even reestablish certainty by giving huge loads of business.
Roosevelt's wife was the person who had the most contact with the poorest part of the population and saw the reality that they lived. She was the one who mentioned Roosevelt about his situation. Roosevelt on his side, having no financial problems because he was rich, did not realize the poverty that a part of the population went through. -Brecia
The market crash and Great Depression should be part of every student's education, in a simplified format in secondary school and in detail in post secondary education. Similar to 2008, it will recur inevitably and repetitively.

@@judya.shroads8245 Eleanor Roosevelt deserves a lot more credit for a lot of Good, helpful and fair policies that were implemented by FDR between 1934 and his death in 1945, as well as for advocating for increases of taxes for the wealthy class to help finance more efficient policies to help poor classes, she was the voice of reason and Goodness in FDR's ear bc she was very smart, brave, empathic and down to earth, very much aware of how bad the Depression was to most Americans and what concrete help was needed, she had friends in charities and newspapers who would report to her regularly.. Contrary to Hoover who was greedy, ruled by hubris, delusional, who didn't care about the people either, only about the wealthy class, to stay in power. Hoover's incompetence, total disconnect, delusion/denial of reality and apathy to what most of the US people were going through had made the first years of the Depression worse than they should have been (until FDR won the election), the US Gov should have done a LOT more & a lot sooner to help stabilize the situation esp related to banks, credit, to help farmers too bc their productions wasted should have been requisitioned to feed the millions of poors instead, overall to help the people. Hoover was one of the worst modern US presidents, he refused to listen to the warnings about the imminent Crash, took no measures to try to regulate Waall Street after the Crash either, he did nothing effective to try to protect and help the US people. FDR was the one who started to tightly regulate Wall Street and the Bank Industry as a whole as necessary, even going against influent lobbying from that industry at the time already, FDR knew that implementing policies to protect the people and credit would help the Economy on top of everything else in the New Deal. He was right, and it was fair. Sadly all these good regulation and other protections were killed by Reagan "to make the US Economy more competitive" smh. We've been seeing the consequences increasing since the 80s. All US Presidents and Administrations (of both parties) since Jimmy Carter have been worse and worse. ALL of them.

The dust bowl didn’t start until farms began to fail in the 30s, after the market crash. The documentary also notes there was a surplus of agricultural products during the depression, so I’m not sure that event was a big factor.

3:50 i suspect the reason farmers destroyed crops was because they were required to by law (the Agricultural Adjustment Act), rather than because they would not have been able to sell them. though you never know...
Farmers destroyed crops because people didn't have the money to buy the food because the people didh't have jobs. A surplus of unsaleable food also meant that farmers couldn't sell the food at a decent enough price to make a living, so they couldn't afford to buy anything either. The whole consumer system basically just collapsed,

I still go to the same stores where she used to buy food. But now I spend 85 bucks just in that store when back then she use to spend only 60.
@@squarecracker Well you are both right. Inflation is at about 2% but only because Federal Regulations exclude the cost of food and energy. For the last few years I have been watching the "growth" in my city. By which I mean, the knock down of old tiny houses and the uprising of huge ones with a huge price tag and tax bill that are ugly asf. I kept saying, this is too much too fast. Even for our big city. I kept saying last summer, something is gonna happen. I just figured another 2008. Not Covid 19 ....
A few months ago I was giving my daughter a Google Earth map tour of my old neighborhood. I showed her the house my great-gf and grandfather built and the block I grew up on. I turned the corner of the connecting street to show her the house we moved to in 1959 and that my dad died in in 1963. Wait, somethings not right here. I exited street view and what I saw next was unrecognizable. The city had torn down a mile square area, including that house and the house my mom bought later in '63 and the house where my friends lived and replaced it with public housing. I felt devestated (sp?) and that a part of my life had born torn away.
Fun Fact: Prior to the crash and the depression, Herbert Hoover was renowned as a great humanitarian. He organized and ran a group that kept millions in Western Europe and Soviet Union from starving after WWI & Russian Revolution. Today Hoover is primarily remembered for “Hoovervilles”, lol.
the question ive constantly been asking that no one has given me a straight answer on yet... Make America Great Again.... when was America great?? yes we are a strong nation but strength doesnt equal great.
I suppose, "great" is a relative term. So it's really about America being *greater.* What country has been greater, in terms of overall military might, individual prosperity/liberty and grandiose of land and resources? The view from Australia in the 80s and 90s was that nothing could stop America. It's why immigrants flocked to the USA to work hard and get ahead. They've never flocked to, say, Iran.
My husband's grandmother said the stock market crash of 1929 was the best thing that ever happened. She and her husband owned farms in South Dakota and never bought any stock. Instead they saved $1,000 a year for 10 years from the profits on their farms during the 1920's and put the money away in their basement, NOT in a bank which my husband's grandmother predicted banks would fail after the market inevitably crashed. She said the rise in stock market was based on crazy borrowing and speculation and she made sure she never ever borrowed money. Crash came and everyone lost their money from stocks falling then banks failed and people had no money but my husband's grandmother had $10,000 in cash during the 1930's and lived like a queen because everything was so cheap. My husband's grandmother said the crash of 1929 was the best thing that ever happened in this country. Lazy fools lost all their money and hard working people who saved their money and stayed out of the market lived like kings in the 1930's because everything was so cheap. The big bankers and speculators who laughed at the little guy lost all their money and the little guy who worked hard and saved came out on top for once.
Well, yes, she owed land. Land produced crops to sell. When all the fake illusions of wealth come crashing down, people won't know how to survive. Bill Gates is buying up a whole bunch of farm land right now. He knows this system is coming to an end soon, but how soon. I suggest you buy farm land too, asap. God help us all.
Until the rich and powerful put their money where their mouth is, then the poor and penniless won’t have a mouth to ask for help from the rich and powerful. If the top 1% of the wealthy put 1% of their wealth into a fund, run by a totally independent agency, an agency recognised by the vast majority of sovereign nations, then homelessness and poverty could be at least reduced to a level never seen before, it wouldn’t happen overnight, it would take years to implement ways of achieving this aim, but at least it could and would help millions of the unfortunate people with no home,no work, and more importantly NO HOPE.
