This is a 1930's Chair made by the Marshall Jackson Company sold by the Sikes company. This was found in my church and I decided to refinish it to see what it might have looked like 80 years ago when it was new. The refinishing transformation is amazing.

Thank you so much for your DIY video it was very helpful. I just bought two chairs on the auction site from the city of Houston exactly like those banker chairs. Going to try to refinish them during my time off around Christmas. 🎄☃️🕊️

Nice! But check out my other video on my 2nd bankers chair first. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-22AYWc5Q3Dc.html

You inspired me. I just got two chairs, similar to those, for free. It will be my Christmas time project. Hopefully, they will turn just as nice.

Good luck. I also refinished a 2nd similar using a quicker method in case you want to see it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-22AYWc5Q3Dc.html

At first there I thought 'maybe better to just clean it and leave it alone?' But you were absolutely right; the improved version looks just magnificent. Great job Tom and very enjoyable vid. Thanks as always.

There are 5 more chairs like this...I don't plan to strip them all down. If I fix the others, it will be a much less drastic and time consuming plan. Thanks Mark. Tom

I love these chairs. They don't make things like they used to. I ❤️ Woodrow, lol.

Great finishing tips. Did you consider just restoring the finish without sanding? If the original finish is either lacquer or shellac, you can often repair the finish with either lacquer thinner or alcohol, respectively. This dissolves the surface of the finish, allowing the finish to flow into small scratches or nicks. Then additional coats may be added if necessary, with light fine sanding between. Just a thought.

I did consider a less drastic method. There are 6 total chairs in this condition. I wanted to completely strip and sand the first one to see how good it could look. Considering the effort required to finish one chair this way, I would consider quicker methods including similar to what you mentioned for the remaining chairs. Thanks! Tom

While birch wasn’t listed in the catalog, “Imitation Mahogany or Walnut” was. This would make it the $28 version. Great restoration! I really enjoy watching these old pieces get new life!

I'm about to undertake a similar project. Thank you for the context-- very helpful to learn from your journey. Did you also consider less aggressive approaches-- milder sanding and solvents? Why use poly instead of a light coat of shellac or wax on older furniture?

Good question. I did a 2nd video using a fast method. You can see it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-22AYWc5Q3Dc.html

Great looking restoration, Tom. I always pick up a tip or two when I watch you work. Today, I picked up several good tips and as a bonus.....Woodrow 'video bombed'. That makes for a very good Sunday. BTW: Where did you pick these chairs up, at an estate sale?

This chair along with 5 others belong to the church I attend. It is a church that dates back to the 1920's. I'm not sure how long these have been there but as I discover cool and interesting things to fix, I'll pass them along. Tom

Great video. What type of sand paper did you use? (Grit)

The short answer is "various". Your question sounds easy but it actually needs more time to explain. Depending on the finish, you use what you need. You have given me the thought that I may need to do a video on choosing the right sandpaper. Keep your eyes open for it :-)
