Here is a Ludwig 1930's 5x14" Super Sensitive chrome over brass snare drum! This snare drum is in excellent condition and has a crisp, articulate sound. The resonant side snare wires are 10 individually-tensioned snares giving you a dry response with a faster decay, and its entire mechanism is in great working order. Internal tone control is present and functional as well. The Super Sensitive model also has a set of wires that are directly under the top head. These can be engaged with a lever and are designed for extra sensitivity when playing softer passages. The mechanism and wires are intact and function perfectly, with the only item being one snare wire strand that is loose as shown. The only other thing to note is some very slight indentations in the shell where the hardware is mounted, which can be seen in our photos. This drum is in phenomenal condition for a drum dating back to the 30's and is sure to satisfy a vintage Ludwig collector! Steve’s notes: This drum is also a heavy 2 pc shell with the welded back bearing edges. This is the shell that creates that incredible sound from the 20s Ludwig snares. Stunning drum in superb condition. Amazingly versatile. Looks almost brand new and it is over 90 yrs old!

Ludwig and Slingerland. My favorite drums from the time when family owned them.

It would be so cool to see Ludwig bring back the original dual-snare setup for a limited edition drum. I believe the 90th anniversary of introduction of the super sensitive is next year!

I bought this exact model of snare from Bun E Carlos’ drum collection. I absolutely love it. It is a thing of beauty whether you play it or not.

What a wonderful sounding drum! And of course the usual excellent playing. I have a late 1970's vintage Ludwig Super Sensitive 5 x 14" it is an excellent drum but doesn't sound as good as that one..the alloy shell in my opinion just doesn't have the warmth and 'depth' of those brass shells on the earlier models. Now I know why they put the additional snares under the batter head on the original models..the sensitivity at low volume is just superb.

I can imagine that there will be many of Steve's customers who get these fantastic-sounding drums home only for reality to dawn on them. Yes, that's right, folks. They sound that good if, and only if, played by a drummer who's as accomplished as Steve!

You would think that because he is great I agree, but many of his customers are actually high profile drummers who go to him for his amazing stock.

+stevemaxwelldrums *Thanks for a demo of the Ludwig & Ludwig® original.* I have a dream-drum concept that was never executed: The Symphonic-Sensitive, which would have an improved version of the batter strainer holding a 14-spring snappy, and the P87/P34 reso strainer with twelve individually-fine-tensionable cofilament nylons (P/N L-1108). ConnSelmer® put a three-snare strainer, similar to Orchestral strainers from Pearl Drum and TAMA/Hoshino, into production; I consider it a fallback to the P87/P34, but the batter strainer is not sold separately by any manufacturer.

Orchestra conductors would love the snare since they can select the degree of projection or muteness…..

Hey steve , luv ur content , but where the fuck did u get that snare stand ?.

The snare stand is a DW. I don’t like those all that much only because the long plastic handle is a pain to use. You have to push it in and turn it and it just isn’t intuitive. Maybe I’m too “low tech” 😀
