In this video, Nathanael Logsdon and Drew Ingram take you along for a "just for fun" camping trip in a 1927 Ford Model T "flivver" with only the most basic of gear, as may have been done during the Great Depression. Enjoy the ride, the views, and some great historical discussion!

Taking the seats out of cars always reminds me of the gag from the movie “King of Jazz” in which the sheepish young couple show up at a police station carrying the backseat of their automobile. The young man says to the desk Sergeant “I’d like to report a stolen car.” Audiences of 1930 must’ve laughed hysterically, while most modern people probably have no idea why it’s funny. 😂

*ProTip:* turn that wide pan/pot 90° every 5-10min while cooking so you get an even heat distribution. Keep a tin of quality black pepper for seasoning. Lots of ingredients will bring salt, but it's a single dimension.
@jamesellsworth9673
@jamesellsworth9673 3 месяца назад
I imagine most car campers of the era would have just the tin of black pepper you recommend. They would also have a coffee pot to also use to boil water. That cool chest strapped to the car could have carried a good bit of kitchen ingredients, including some syrup. Ah well, there are many ways of doing something and this level of simplicity worked for a one night camp.

I'm wondering if the firearms and fear of hoboes isn't a holdover from the 1890's and early 1900's when there really were professional criminals (yeggs) who lived in hobo camps and dynamited safes in banks and post offices. Their crimes were mostly against property rather than individuals, and that style of banditry dropped off dramatically in the 1920s as daylight bank robberies increased, but that early association with crime is why the police were so heavy-handed with the homeless during the Depression, and I wouldn't be surprised if that fear was still in the minds of the public. Irrational as it was, as you pointed out. Excellent channel and content. I've always been fascinated with the first quarter of the 20th century, and thinking I need to seriously dive into living history soon. Keep it up!

I’d like to give ya a tip I learned in the scouts as a boy before you use a skillet or any vessel on a fire that you don’t want to black the bottom of smear dish soap straight on the bottom and sides and the black won’t stick it just washed off when you do the dishes 😉 works wonders I wouldn’t have believed it unless I don’t the dishes and seen it come off so easily

G'Day, I came across your channel only a short while ago and am thoroughly enjoying watching your videos. In the past I've done American Civil War reenacting here in OZ and a couple of times in the US. Reliving relatively more recent times such as the 20's and 30's really appeals to me and your videos have become something of an inspiration for me to further this interest. Australia has/had a history of swaggies--intinerant workers who traveled around to find rural work--shearing, fencing, basically whatever work they can find. My wife's grandfather humped his swag/Matilda during the Great Depression and sent money home to his family in outer Melbourne, Victoria. In the early 1960's, I recall seeing a few old swaggies on the road. You may have heard the song "Waltzing Matilda"--the story of a swaggie who illegally acquires a sheep/jumbuck. The song may need a little translation! Thanks for another fine and informative video. I look forward to the next one. Ooroo! Steve

I really like your videos and your effort to learn about how things were done, what was worn and what was available. I do have some suggestions to consider. The depression did drive people to use what was available at home. My experiences of living with and camping with my grandparents (from the Appalachians) and who were born in the 19th century, gives me insights into this time period. Even though it was the depression, some thoughts: most households, particularly rural ones had cast iron and used them every day; tripods, good to suspend pots; a "Billy can" (large tin can with a wire bale) would always be over/on the fire if you couldn't bring Granny's coffee pot; probably biscuits rather than pancakes (most likely pre-made for convenience), tarpaulin for shelter or ground cloth, found on all farms; leaves for bedding; utensils from home, kitchen knife, fork, spoon, etc. Lastly, most households in the 30's still had kerosene lanterns. My grandfather used them well into the 1980's around the barn, farmyard and house. Yes, they had electricity, but you use what was cheap and trusty. Every camp had at least one. Keep up the good work!
@20thcenturyadventures
@20thcenturyadventures 9 месяцев назад
Of course, you can do this with a wide array of options within the period. I was showing examples of what could be done, not saying this was the only way it could be done. The tarp and leaf bed were done in a previous video, so I didn't see a need to repeat that. Besides, I wanted to try the car cushion bed. I took an enamel pan because it was lightweight and easy to clean. I certainly could have used cast iron as well. And if you noticed, I did use a kerosene lantern... Thanks for the input! Good stuff!

I’m throwing this comment in at 17:32, you might mention it later but I wanted to share the thought before it vanished. Many of the wandering types during this era would have been young men in their 30-40’s. Many of these men would have found employment during the Great War as truck drivers/drivers. So the idea of living out of a vehicle in very primitive settings would have been familiar, and in many cases, preferred. I’ve been really enjoying your videos lately 🤙🏻

Very nice video. I like to see people doing vintage camping. We do something similar. We period camp with our 27 Model T when we can. We also like day trips. Back in the day my grandparents drove a 1925 T Fordor from Oklahoma to California on route 66 before it was route 66 and then drove it once a year till the late 1980s chasing work in the fruit harvests. They camped out m[t of the time. There stories is what got me interested in Model Ts and vintage camping. We really wanted to come to the camp rendezvous a month or so ago. I would take a sidearm for security. A few years ago, a RU-vid creator named Martin was on his woodland property near his cabin when he began to be stalked by a pack of wolves. He managed to scare them off but pointed out that he should have followed his normal practice of taking a sidearm on his hikes. These days, Environmentalists rejoice in the reintroduction of wolves and black bears, even in state parks with nearby camping facilities (and garbage dumps.) On one trip, I had black bears hooting late at night and running through the woods just behind our campsite. I did not go back there.

Once again, great video. One thing I've learned from cooking over fires is to set some rocks up at one end to hold your pot or grill fairly level, keep the fire going pretty good and just pile up the coals in your "keyhole" for cooking. That knife you were using looks like an old Western Cutlery knife I have that belonged to my grandfather. Very good carbon steel.

That was a good video. Funny how many processed foods were available at the time. Crissco, Bisquick as well as canned and powdered milk and canned Golden Syrup as well. None were for the upscale market so it could be affordable for those that had jobs. I suppose it depended on where you lived as many used a .22 to get rabbit and squirrel as well as grouse and prairie chicken. A guy who graduated before me in the 70s took a summer and walked with a backpack to Tennesse. He carried a Colt Woodsman in his pack for rabbits and hand fishing gear.

I found mine at an estate sale, and a buddy found his at an antiques show. I've also seen various ones on eBay as well. There were many different styles and designs of these during the teens and twenties. Another option is the Hawkeye Refrigerator Basket. Those were very popular, and because they are pretty, they didn't get thrown away, so they are plentiful today. I'll do a video on mine sometime. I would use search terms for anything you can think of that a modern person might call it. Sometimes a misidentified antique yields the best deal...

I really haven't checked this one against the GPS, because normally I don't worry about it. I just make sure I top off every few hours. (Model Ts don't have odometers, unless it is an after market add on.) Generally, however, a Model T that is running properly will get somewhere in the ballpark of 16 mpg. A lot depends on how well-tuned the cars are, the driving style of the operator, and whether or not he knows what he's doing. Some folks have claimed to get over 20mpg, which may be possible, especially if the car has had aluminum pistons put in. Also, whether the road is level and flat, or has a lot of hills, also is a factor.

Antique stores, eBay, auctions, FB Marketplace... it helps to first collect a few catalogs from the period. There are a lot of reprints available fairly cheap. Look for Abercrombie and Fitch, Coleman, L.L.Bean, and other companies that existed then. Get familiar enough with the stuff that you can recognize it when you see it. Also helps to look at completed sales on eBay (use advanced search) to see what these things are actually selling for, so you don't overpay. It also helps it you are handy at repairing things. I've gotten good deals on broken or non-functional gear rhat I knew how to fix.

@ExelArts yes. The asbestos is encased between two layers of soldered tin. Even if the tin were to be damaged, the water from the cooler would prevent any issues, because asbestos is only hazardous when the particles get into the air where they can be breathed into the lungs. There is no way for that to happen, unless I ran the cooler through a wood chipper. 😎

chances are campers brought guns for protection from people that wish ill or animal. Sadly there are no exact statistics of camping attacks in the 1930s and they didnt gather such statistics back then. However, it is well-known that camping safety precautions were not as developed in the past as they are today. Therefore, it is possible that campers faced more risks of exposure to wildlife and other hazards. It is advisable to do research on specific areas and conditions of camping in the 1930s to get an accurate answer to this question. So we dont know rather how many attacks happend chances are there were attacks but how many will forever be a mystery
