I purchased this 1930s Marx Battery Operated ElectroMagnetic Crane Truck on eBay October of 2020. It was in dire need of a restoration and missing numerous parts. During disassembly I snapped off a tab on the boom, a tab on the boom mount, found the tab for the battery holder snapped off. The truck was missing the battery switch completely, as well as the electro-magnet. One of the wheels was damaged and had to be repaired, I ended up remaking quite a few parts for this restoration. By far this is my longest video I have produced to date, however I believe that it is well worth it. I love the final results.
Want to send Chip Channel something? Restorable toys, tools, etc..

There's always something so heartwarming seeing these poor old forgotten toys be given a new lease on life. Even if they don't get played with again, at least they no longer have to sit and die in rust.

My favorite thing is that you play with them; before, during, and after. A toy is never happy unless it's being enjoyed. Their world of make-believe is very real to them, and to the children who have loved them over the years, many of who are no longer with us. You honor their memory.

Young man, I know I've said it before but your 'gift' truly does put a smile on my face and tears in my eyes because what you do opens doors and windows to long held, suppressed memories of a simpler life, a safer life, a less stressful life and the recall of the joys and innocence of of our childhood. You are more than an expert in your field. You are the childhood Santa of us old forgotten ones in society. God bless ya son.

My sons loved trucks, when they were growing up. One of them even grew up to become a diesel mechanic. During the depression, this truck would have been out of the reach of most parents finances. This had to been have been some youngster's prized possession. I love watching your videos. Your craftsmanship is amazing. (I am 69 year old great grandmother.)

It's amazing how fun and imaginative toys could be made these days. I especially remember a firetruck (made somewhere in the 60-ties, I believe) you could connect to your garden hose and drive around putting out fires :) And today? We have microchips, electronics and hey, here's your _another_ remote controlled car, the same stuff as 30 years ago but now you can control it using smartphone... what an achievement.

They had some pretty sophisticated toys back in the '30s. The trick is, you had to have money to buy them, and in the Depression era many people did not. My own folks grew up at this time, and they had almost no factory-made toys to play with.

I was a kid in the late '50's and into the '60's, and in my Chicago neighborhood, there were lots of little "Mom & Pop" shops that had sheet metal toys made in Japan. I always wondered how they happened to focus on those toys, and now I see that Marx and other U.S. toy manufacturers established the style decades earlier. Post-war Japanese manufacturers must have felt there was still a demand for this type of toy (though most had flywheel or spring motors, not battery). Always beautiful restorations - better than original!

Not so much for the Marx toys, but the Tonka and Buddy-L toys, these take me back to my child hood. I was born in 1972, but as a child I inherited many of my Uncle's Toys and my Father's toys that the Grandparents saved for the "Grandkids". To see these toys brought back to their deserved childhood glory is nothing less than awesome! I did some research on the Marx and Wyandotte(s), these toys were not "cheap" in their hey-day, some of these like the Lionel Train Sets and the American Flyer Sets were very expensive toys by circa 1930's. It would be good to point out some of the trucks that are being restored here could easily run on the better part of $10 to $20 dollars or more. By today's standards these toys would be close to the $70.00 to $100.00 mark easily. In particular the battery operated ones with motors and lights. These were very expensive toys for their time, and only fairly wealthy families would buy these for their children. Which in turn makes them very rare and very high-end, (by no means is this comment to be arrogant or snobby), its just a fact of the time. I did not come from a wealthy family, not by any measure of the word, but I do remember walking through the toy store in my home town, and there were always the "Top Shelf" toys which were always on the X-Mas list but "Santa" never delivered. Having said this, I am very happy to see some of these toys being restored to their rightful "Top Shelf" glory. Keep this up sir, you are doing all of these toys their due justice! Thank you for the memories too.

I really like this Streamline Moderne stuff. I owned 1948 Indian Chief which were probably some of the last vehicles built in this style. Indian went out business in 1953.

This was a neat one! My favorite part of restoration videos like this is watching each restorer try different techniques and methods on how to produce a new exact replica of an old broken or missing part/piece of their project. They probably think it’s a pain in the a$$, but it’s so interesting to me. I’m always wowed by what they manage to create & it always looks pretty dang close to the original too! I wonder what his favorite part of his restorations are....probably piecing it all together at the end if I had to guess? Stripping the paint might be pretty fun too! This project was a cool one and a job well done!! 💕

Can you imagine how much a battery operated toy would cost in the 1930's? That had to have been the most sophisticated toy made up to that point. Every kid in the country probably wanted one of these.

With its bright shiny colours (yellow, red and blue always match) it looked like a christmas candy hanging from the tree. AMAZING! Very well done my friend!
