This session is entered in Johnson-Shirley ADBORAF under the Dick Cherwin Orch. listings but shown as possibly conducted by Lou Gold. Over the years it was “Penthouse Serenade” by which the song most commonly came to be known. See also my posts by:

Art Deco at its finest! Smith Ballew conjures up visions of lofty living in those fabled digs of the wealthy in New York City of 1931. I can see the lights of the avenues and bridges when I listen to this tune. Thanks for posting this one.

How do you find this stuff? Smith Ballew was very versatile. Not Bing Crosby but talented.

I've always liked this song. A sweet side - and Smith heads right into the verse rather than let the orchestra play a minute ten.

I remember this song being in 'Beau James', a 1957 movie about the life and political career of N.Y. mayor Jimmy Walker with Bob Hope and Vera Miles. As I recall, it was a slower version, but well done.

Oh! that feeling I get when I listen to these Records from the 1931-1933 period that are AWESOME from start to finish, I GET GOOSEPIMPLES When I hear the ending (in this one 2:38 on) of these Records very cleverly done, I have quite a few Records that have this feel to them, Will Osborne`s "Twas Only A Summer Nights Dream" is another, I LOVE it!

My favorite period for songs, orchestras, several vocalists, pre-code movies, cars especially Packards, the beautiful women, their soft hairstyles with a little fluff, their pretty dresses and gowns, fox trots and waltzes. Yes, I know it was the Great Depression. My grandparents and parents suffered through the early 1930s, but it must have been wonderful if you had the money.

@@catlover34fl You sound like Me! I have a passion for the 1920`s and early to mid 1930`s! (I collect and Restore 1920`s Cars!) My Grandparents lived here in Ola, Arkansas, Yes it was hard at times for them, But they said it was a special time! Even after the awful Tornado on November 19th 1930, Look it up on RU-vid some of the footage is on here! I wish I knew how to send You the link!!?? Just look up Ola Arkansas Tornado! But even though it brought Ola to it`s knees! strangely the Bank of Ola that was halfway destroyed, Had plenty of assets, And was one of the few Banks to survive even with a disaster in 1930`s America! People here gathered around, They pulled each other out, And what more can You ask? The ERA had a very neat look and sound, ie Listen to this BEAUTIFUL Record!

Another great song. Always makes me think of New York City. I was born in upstate New York during the 1940's but this song was so well known all over New York back then. I love it.

Agree.... so beautiful. I also enjoy Annette Hanshaw's rendition, a somewhat slower and tranquil interpretation, from a private recording made later in her life which I came across on RU-vid.

I can't hear this song without thinking of my mother, who adored it and, I'm sure, enjoyed the sophisticated lyrics, which Smith's clear enunciation allows us to appreciate fully. Surely many a Depression Era listener imagined every detail of that penthouse and its surroundings and dreamed of love in such a setting. I can't recall a version I don't like, but my favorite is Harry James' instrumental take on Brunswick, cut while he was still a member of the Goodman band, on which Jess Stacy and Basie's Herschel Evans and Jo Jones are marvelous.

What's not to like about this charmer,or Ballew's rendition? Thanks for mentioning the HJ recording, that's new to me. I'll look it up. Thanks also, for sharing the thoughts of your mother. Often, songs become more than just words and music, when they stir fond memories.

In UK, Carroll Gibbons and the Savoy Orpheans did an excellent version with Al Bowlly as vocalist in London on May 11 1932, featuring Rudy Starita on drums and xylophone. It should be on RU-vid somewhere.

Just found out recently that it's pronounced "Buh-loo". Which means I've been saying his name wrong for multiple years, and that many others are also. Kinda disappointing too, as the way me & others have thought it was "Bal-yew", which sounds so much fancier.
