Thanks for keeping this car original. There's no harm in "rodding" a wreck, found in a field with a tree growing out of it. But something THIS original needs to be kept stock.

Really enjoyed this video. What a nice original Plymouth! PLEASE don't convert it into just another hotrod. There are many more hotrods than original cars like this. At a car show, it this was hotrodded, I would walk right past it, but the way it is, it is so interesting. Like a time capsule.

As I stated in the video I'll keep the original engine as long as I can it works fine if I stick close to home, even if I swap the engine the car will look the same. Everyone forgets these cars drove like crap and had only 83 hp which is less than my motorcycle, my dream is to drive this car cross country someday exactly how it appears but I don't get 8 weeks of vacation to do it with the old 6 and 3 speed Trans, and 410 rear, also this engine was rebuilt a few times before they parked it several decades ago. Basically the engine is at the end of its lifespan and I've performed the last rebuild on it, sleeving it would be just throwing good money after bad especially since the block was extremely rusty in the water jackets.

I feel the same way about Rods. I have killed a lot of nice old Fords on the Oval Track and now wish I had preserved them. Plus today I can hardly walk thanks to all the stupidity and Injuries.

@@carnut7615 I'm new to your channel and I enjoy the content but if you are familiar with Vice Grip Garage,Derek drove a 1928 Ford Model A over 723 miles from Texas to Tennessee or somewhere down there but the car needs an engine rebuild and other work but it all original type running gear. He took all back roads and got passed by everyone but your car could handle the interstate in short runs maybe of it wasn't too busy. My 70 Cougar convt is the only car I ever restored and it took 3 years to get it right and that was starting with a clean rust free body.

@@carnut7615 You can swap in a 230 version of this engine for about 130+ horsepower, which is a lot more than this 201 produces, but looks outwordly the same. You can also change differential gears so that you have better gearing, or even swap in an overdrive trans. You don't have to put a Chevy engine in it. And Plymouths didn't drive like crap.

I had one just like it in 1970. Paid 600 dollars for it looking about the same condition. Pulled it home and pulled the head and pushed a piston down without turning it over. Rebuilt the engine and did some work cleaning it up and traded it for a 39 ford sedan. It still belongs to the next guy's son and has been restored. Hope to get over and see it one day.

Very nice! As you drove it it reminds me of riding with my Grandpa when I was around 8 to 10 years old. He had an old International truck from the 1940's I think and he had one of those balls on the steering wheel that they used to put on to make it easier to wheel them with the big wheel and manual steering. That engine sounds just like it too. I loved that old man! He was a real man gentle kind and hard working, He smoked too much and drank only a little as he had a bout with alcohol in his younger years and didn't want it to affect his family so didn't think it was a good thing to have around much.

The year before I was born my father bought one of these business coupes . The back seat became my playpen and I could stand up and look around as I wished, no seat belts in those days so I had complete freedom . Wasn't so great after I got to be four or five then I had to sit in the front between my parents and I couldn't see anything except the dash.... Memories of a little kid. F

@thomasopdahl1873
@thomasopdahl1873 2 года назад
My first car was that exact model. I bought it when I was 16 in 1970 and we towed it to a friend's farm where I pulled the head and pushed one piston down without turning the engine over. I worked on it and learned a lot but never got to drive it before I traded it for a 39 ford sedan that was already running. It got restored and now belongs to the son of the guy that got it from me. Seeing this really brings back memories. If I were you I'd look into possibly modifying the engine for more power and gearing it up so it doesn't have to run so fast. Keeping the original motor will be important to you over time. It would be capable of higher speeds with the right stuff and there are people who know what to do. That engine was used clear into the fifties and is a good one. A different cam and carb and a split manifold and maybe some porting and milling the head. Could be as much fun as you've had bringing it back to life so far. There are some larger displacements with the same block that you could swap right in. When I had mine my first choice would have been to change to a 440 and that would have been a huge mistake for what I know now. If it won't bolt in, don't change it.

This was 1969 and I made enough to fill my piggy bank that summer, proud of myself 9 year old made money to spend on our trips from Arkansas to TN a few times a year.

Thanks for the video, really enjoyed it. When I was young (50 years ago!!!) I had a buddy who had the woodie version, and I had a '38 Ford Deluxe sedan. We didn't hesitate to push these old girls along at 60mph back in the day. I think today we've forgotten the concept of revs, with the modern lazy high HP engines. I love the originality, you know what they say? It's like virginity, once it's gone ya can't get it back!! I had a '37 Ford straight-back sedan in this condition, and with the folly of youth, stripped it for a nut and bolt restoration. I still have the original upholstery, better than yours.

@carnut7615
@carnut7615 2 года назад
Thanks! No plans on exhaust, it has the original and it's still in pretty good shape. 6 volt is OK but the lights are like candles and they start harder, 12 volt is an upgrade hands down, plus these were positive ground from factory.

@ronwaters478 2 года назад
@@carnut7615 - My 6V positive ground 55 Desoto starts just fine. Fresh wiring. Rebuilt starter. No problems. If the car sits for a few weeks or more, I'll put the battery on the charger for an hour or so, since it will take some cranking to fill the carburetor. One suggestion concerning the dim headlights is to resilver the reflectors inside the headlight housings. Most of it has flaked off after 80+ years.
@jeromebreeding3302
@jeromebreeding3302 2 года назад
The original gauges could be used with a voltage reducer. My idea for the car, rather than a V-8, would be a late model Flathead six, with a high-compression aluminum head, two carbs, tubular headers, and split exhaust. The trans would be a modern 5 speed, to allow freeway flying.
@carnut7615

If you use 1 gauge battery cables instead of auto parts store 4 gauge cables, car will start fine with 6 volts. You can also use an 8 volt battery if you really think you need more juice. No need to convert to 12 volts and disable the gauges.
