I sold my last Harley in 1980 when I was 22. A 1962 Duo Glide that I completely rebuilt (see pictures in my 1st video). Harleys are in my blood, when I hear or see one I get that good feeling. I turned 59 in 2017 & discussed with my wife building one more for my 60th birthday. End of Aug 2017 I found/bought a sweet classic, a 1937 Big Twin 74 cubic inch Flathead UL (2 days before I bought it I broke my left wrist). Throughout the late fall & winter of 2017/2018 I started the teardown. Making a list of repairs & parts needed. As you see in the videos I do all the work myself, mechanical, wheels, wiring, welding, paint, etc.. I turned 60 in Feb of 2018 & it took me approx. 6-months to complete it. Finished bike the end of Sept. 2018. I have 8 videos. The first 4-videos are a slide show of the tear down & rebuild. The last 4-videos show the bike starting, running & me riding her. I never rode a foot clutch, hand shift Harley before & took me a couple of hours to get the feel of it. Happy 60th birthday to me, and what a thrill being back in the saddle after 38yrs!

Thanks for posting. I have a '46 UL. I am working through it piece by piece to make it dependable. I also have a Cycle Electric generator. I noted at 17:04 you had a slide showing the Cycle Electric with the original oil slinger drive gear. Did you use the oil slinger gear? The oil slinger is held with a pin, Cycle Electric have a threaded shaft for gear with a nut. My generator has a gear without the slinger. Wondering if I will have any oil issues at the front of gear case. Thanks again.

Hey great to hear you have a 46 UL. I installed cycle electric DGV-5000L generator. You have to use 31035-58 oil deflector (this is oil deflector used on 1958 to 1981 Harleys) and stock washer and gear. Everything works great with no oiling problems. I run straight 70wt oil. If you don't know let me warn you these flatheads run really hot so use good silicone on all your gaskets or you will have oil leaks. Once you rebuild the engine correctly you will have no worries about dependability. They are reliable like a old farm tractor!!

Did you have to replace the shafts or main bearing races? Was it necessary to line lap the races and/or use oversize rollers? Great job.

sprocket shaft was replaced with a JIMS. Other shafts, races & roller bearings perfect & to spec. I replaced both thrust washers to bring it to low end of spec .012 (from .022).

That is one sweet machine. Do those flathead cylinders need to have a crosshatch pattern?
@backinthesaddle350
@backinthesaddle350 2 года назад
Hi, yes crosshatch pattern is necessary to "seat" the new rings so they seal

@@backinthesaddle350 thanks. Building a wld and going at it on my own. The cylinders were good but no crosshatch. Hope it comes out as nice as your bike.

@@lophloph07 glad to hear your building it yourself. Take your time and enjoy the build. If you don't know flatheads run very hot and I strongly recommend you use good high heat silicone on all your gaskets to prevent oil leaks.
