To start your seeds, add a string, rope, pipe cleaner, or something for them to adhere to. The sulfate forms better crystals, and using distilled water is best. To color your crystals, use food coloring.

Julie, I'm Luke you, I get bored easily with my crafts! I've done macrame, jewelry, uv resin, crochet, and many others, and I truly enjoy watching you and your experiments. I don't have any useful hints for growing crystals, but I wish you luck and look forward to your next try!❤ Good luck!

I loved growing crystals as a kid, I had forgotten all about them lol. I remember after getting my seed crystal I used to suspend it with cotton and put it back into the alum, I also remember if I saw more seed crystals growing in the alum I poured into a clean jar I would take out my seed crystal which was on the cotton and remove the seed crystals on put the clean alum into another jar because if you don’t change the alum over and clear the seed crystals the seed crystal you attached to the piece of cotton is having to compete against the other seed crystals to grow. You get a much bigger crystal if you make sure the crystal you want to grow does not have to compete with the growth of other seed crystals, and just keep repeating the process. Thanks for bringing back my childhood. Luv Jacs in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Since you mentioned to comment since you claim you don't know what you're doing, I'd like to offer a bit of chemistry behind this. Most solids have what's known as a solubility curve, which measures how much solid will dissolve at a certain temperature. This is why you are heating the crystal medium. Some are more "flat" than others. Table Salt (Sodium Chloride) for example doesn't let much more dissolve at higher temperatures, Sugar has a pretty steep curve. When the liquid has as much as it can hold at that temperature, it is called "saturated". Allowing it to cool slowly in a very clean environment allows the solution to become "Super Saturated" (Holding more solid than it normally would at a certain temperature.) When a seed is introduced to a super saturated solution, the crystals start to form quickly, which ends up producing a bunch of very small crystals... the sludge you're getting. Also, the floating crystals (more on the alum video) are because as the water leaves at it's surface higher concentrations of the chemical cause the seeds to form there. When they get too heavy they fall to the bottom and form more seeds for the smaller crystals to form. Ideally, you want to put your seed crystals into a saturated solution, and let it cool VERY slowly. This encourages new deposits to align themselves to the matrix of the already formed seed crystal vrs making totally new crystals. if the solution you're adding your seeds to is already saturated, they shouldn't dissolve when you pour the hot water over. Also, I'd consider covering with plastic wrap to slow down the evaporation to prevent the floating crystals from forming too quickly. you *do* want evaporation to take place, but very slowly. Once it's cooled you can remove or poke holes in the plastic. (Still cover with something that will keep the dust out though!) There is a lot going on, but trying to keep it short. Part of the fun is experimenting. I am not an expert, but i'm willing to chat more as it's a topic i enjoy Be safe and have fun! .
@PghFlip
@PghFlip 6 месяцев назад
One thing you can do to ensure you have a saturated solution is to keep adding it until you get some at the bottom of the container that *will not dissolve* and the carefully decant the liquid only (none of the undissolved crystals) into your growing container. a coffee filter could help with this.

crystals are formed by repeating the same small shape many times and in the same pattern < and using the same substance will form in the same way and what ever type of crystal you get will depend on how fast the solution cools , the slower it cools the bigger the crystal, i wrap and cover mine with towels and keep it in a warm place ! hope that helps some ...hugs

Hi Julie I saw several videos on homemade crystals with adp and the spikes are all spikes after leaving it there for 1 or 2 weeks and b4 u put the big seed she threw in a dash of adp, then she put the seed and left it there foeb1 or 2 weeks and the container was much smaller and higher and it was a PC of small Tupperware like for sauce or dressing. I think I saw 100g of ADP for 200ml of water.

Julie....we grew crystals in high school chemistry. The teacher taught us that each type of salt/sodium/sulphite grew in its own crystal structure. I recommend doing research for the compound the grows in the structure you are seeking. Also, adding the additional compound can cause a molecular change creating a new complex compound which could affect the growing structure.

It was clearer and sparklier before you rinsed it.I don’t think your supposed to rinse them as even the cold water can remove some of the surface..It’s a very long winded process but you can get some amazing results from these projects.Not sure on the longevity of them because they in theory should absorb things from the environment ,like water from the air etc,as they are not natural,but manufactured crystals.Unless of course there’s a way of stabilising them. Fun watching though 🥰

What I remember about crystals is that what shape they grow in is determined by negative, and positive ionic exchange and atoms, molecules. It is really not that complicated. Squares, and romboids are natural shapes, but obaliskes are not, those are man made, carved. Grab a book on crystals and read, the reading is easy ,and you will be amazed at how understandable it is. The one you grew today is quite nice. Good luck.

When measuring liquids, you need to take into account capilliary action where the water creeps up the side of the measuring container slightly. Look sideways at the water/liquid in the container and you will see a small elongated bubble on the side. You need to measure against the bottom of the bubble. When that reaches the line of measure desired, it's an accurate measurement.
