Though not anywhere near the top of lists which rank the “classic” Warner Brothers musicals of the 1930s, “Ready, Willing and Able”(1937) did a great job of showcasing one of Johnny Mercer’s finest lyrics, including a song & dance on a giant typewriter set piece (film clip available on RU-vid). Jimmy Brierly is vocalist on this pleasant Reisman arrangement, though it was Bing Crosby’s recorded version with the Jimmy Dorsey orchestra that purportedly outsold all the rest ( • 1937 HITS ARCHIVE: Too... )
From 78rpm Brunswick 7831 - Too Marvelous For Words (Mercer-Whiting) by Leo Reisman & his Orchestra, vocal by Jimmy Brierly, recorded in NYC February 4, 1937 .

Always wondered what “Full Range” actually meant, other than pure hype.

The version in the movie "Dark Passage" was the best. Who was the vocalist?

Singing's a bit (ahem...) foursquare, but band is okay. Nice coda!

Band vocalists really had to watch their expression - in the same way stage actors later to had to tone down the emoting for television. Compared to the musical theater singing style of our era, they really couldn't get away with much at all. I like to think they had to sing like the instrumentalists played - with just a little more rhythmic freedom, but equally as smooth and restrained.

@@RatPfink66 Foursquare means that the singer is bang on the beat (as is the band). And it is nonsensical to maintain that singers in the thirties could not emote. Ever seen and/or heard Al Bowlly? Bing Crosby? Quite a gulf between them and Mr Brierly.....

@@basilpeewit3350 its nonsensical to compare journeymen artists to exceptional ones. what i meant was the standard of good work in that era. also: foursquare might mean "square" if you're reading casually.
