Steve Hanson, a volunteer for the Austin Steam Train Association since 1999, gives a tour full of history on ATSF 1371, the Nambe.
The Nambe is a rare example of the streamlined stainless steel passenger cars manufactured by the Budd Company in 1937 for the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe railroad. The car initially served on the Super Chief line between Chicago and Los Angeles, and after World War II, operated on various lines, including the Texas Chief between Galveston and Chicago. It is fitting that the car is returning to Texas after being out of service for several decades.
Originally part of the eight-car 1370 series, it is only one of two in existence, and the only one with its interior features and finishes intact. The car exemplifies streamlined design of the 1930s, both on the exterior and the interior, and has a remarkably high degree of integrity.
Inside this heated and cooled adults only First Class Lounge car you will find tables and chairs to seat up to 32 people in the main lounge, along with a 12 person private compartment that offers seating at three tables for four. The private compartment has windows on one side of the room, and on the other side has doors for privacy.

Very good presentation on a beautiful example of the history of passenger trains. I look forward to stories on the remaining cars the railroad operates.

Beautiful and so modern looking for 1937. I never would have thought it's that old.

I think those Budd stainless steel cars are still aesthetically pleasing after all these years.

1937! My God! They still look much more modern than many things built today.

The Super Chief is sort of a hobby of mine - I'm currently building an n-scale model railroad layout of the 1951 version, with the then newly introduced pleasure dome. (I'd pay good money for a ride on one of those.) And I sure would love a ride on the Nambe - those sure were the great days of railroad travel. As I'm sure many Santa Fe fans know, the Cochiti is in the California Railroad Museum in Sacramento - I've been in it several times. Thanks so much for posting this.

Glad you liked the video! I'm sure your n-scale layout will be great. Stay tuned for our next video, where we'll cover our other Super Chief car, the 1950 Maurice Beckham!
