Still wie die Nacht
Music by Karl Böhm
Still wie die Nacht
tief wie das Meer,
soll deine Liebe sein!
Still wie die Nachte
Tief wie das Meer
Soll deine Liebe, deine Liebe sein,
Soll deine Liebe sein!
Wenn du mich liebst,
so wie ich dich,
will ich dein Eigen sein.
Heiß wie der Stahl
und fest wie der Stein
soll deine Liebe, deine Liebe sein!
Soll deine Liebe sein!
(Author -anonymous)
Calm as the night,
deep as the sea,
Should be thy love for me!
If love like mine
glow in thy heart,
I am forever thine.
Fervent as steel,
and firm as the hills.
Should be thy love for me!
Translation from German to (singable)English by Nathan Haskell Dole (Lieder.net)
Elisabeth Schumann (13 June 1888 - 23 April 1952) was a German lyric soprano. She was known for her sparkling stage presence and her playfulness (and from her photos, it looks like mischievousness too:). She loved dogs, and liked being photographed with them. She had a full and long career, and was an audience favorite!
Played with a Victor No. 4 soundbox and a medium Burmese Colour Needle (thorn).

Thank you for listening! Isn’t her performance of this just lovely? What a great artist she was! For me, It is smart to have Kleenex nearby when listening to this.

Yes. Soooo many musicians were forced to flee/hide out/ get out or be imprisoned and killed. What a fraught time!! It affected musicians all over Europe. It is interesting to read who did what when. Who (which musicians) hid people in their chateaux, who escaped to America and how, and how (if)did they get back after the carnage? who did and didn’t sing for Hitler when he sent his “invitations” to perform for him. Yikes! And listen to how gorgeous this music is!

There is a great book by Ida Cook (“The Bravest Voices”) that tells the story of 2 sisters who were part of a movement to help these musicians during this period. Amelia Galli-Curci is one important singer involved in it. It’s amazing to read about these musicians we listen to and see how they coped.
