This silent film features the 1938 Pacific International Air Races and the Cleveland National Air Races. While the National Air Races are well known, the Pacific International is more obscure. These races were backed by a group of businessmen in the San Francisco Bay Area and directed by James Rowan Ewing, with total prize money of $25,000.

They are a lot of fun to ride in though. Took a half hour hop on one three years ago at Jimmy Stewart Airport in Indiana, PA.

This is the Kendall Oil film. The embedded caption is wrong for the scene at Oakland where Steve Wittman is testing the engine of his raceplane - that's "Bonzo", not Chief Oshkosh". "Chief Oshkosh" is shown earlier having small wheels installed, and then being wheeled out tail first by the crew.
