Smash mouth--Then the morning comes

Many pre-WW2 cars had their gas filler on the "Curb Side" Passenger side because early gas stations were pumps on the side-walks outside of hardware stores.

Sadly, this car’s passing also marked the end of an era for non-sealed beam headlights. Government regulations required all cars to switch to using sealed beams lasting from 1940 until 1983. So beautifully styled headlamps as on the 39 Lincoln became more bug-eyed, as did all cars afterwards. However, sealed beams were easy to obtain and replace with no special lenses. And unlike all of today’s cars with polycarbonate lenses they don’t turn yellow.

Packard 12 Lincoln K You do know that the motor in the Zephyrs was a completely different V12. The comparison of the red 1936 and green 1939 were on different coach builders.there was a more similar sedan in 1939 to the 1936.

4:40 Always liked round gauges best. 9:18 Yes, the roof does get higher in the rear compartment from where you're standing, but from the side-view photos you provided, it really doesn't on the 1939 model. The fancy back seat people may have to take off their top hats. The passenger compartment does bulge out to give a wider seating area in the rear, that's probably why the running board gets so much narrower the further back you go. Love this LIncoln's headlamps & tail-lamps. The rear folding trunk rack is really inventive, fancy Wall Street tycoons have to sail to Europe on the Queen Mary, you know, and take lots of stuff with em. WYR: 1. Packard 2. The 39 Continental, naturally. That was the car Sonny Corleone got shot in.

Very cool car Jay and for me personally I’d take the Lincoln k series in both scenarios but the 39 looks older than the 36 for some reason it’s like they cheapened out on the glass being two piece affairs and the front seat looks cheaper but I definitely like the 39’s headlight treatment better, thanks for sharing another wonderful video

39 Packard V 12 39 Zephyr That Lincoln is a perfect example of understated elegance. Really love to look at the dashboard on that one the only thing I have to add to that is in regards to the V12. What do you get when you take a flathead Ford V8, with its design flawed inherent tendency to overheat, and stack four more cylinders onto the end of it? If you answered a tendency to still overheat you would be correct. At least, to Ford's credit they did every year work on eliminating or lessening the effect of overheating on their Flathead V engines, That was still a problem for the Ford flathead the engine design throughout its entire lifetime. My other grandfather was a die-hard Ford guy throughout his entire life. When asked by my dad why he drove Fords that constantly overheated and vapor locked, his answer was almost a denial. He would say every car has its idiosyncrasies and if you want to drive that brand of car you just have to learn to accept them and deal with them. My dad who was never really loyal to any brand of car would just always ask him but why? When you can buy other manufacturers vehicles that don't vapor lock and overheat wouldn't you want to drive them instead? My grandfather was a stubborn man no question about it. LOL

The story of the exclusive 'K' Lincolns is a bit complicated , especially when you think of the relatively small numbers produced. They were good looking , high quality cars though , and certainly worth remembering. In short : During the 20's ,Lincoln had been using their own high quality , expensive to produce V8 , which eventually grew to around 384 c.i. 110 h.p. In 1931 , using plans formulated before the Depression , the company introduced a new V12 chassis to compete with other luxury car manufacturers . It was called the KB model . 150 hp V12 of 447.9 c.i. .The remaining stocks of the old V8 engines were also installed in the new K series chassis ), and sold as the KA series (125hp V8 , 384 c.i ) By 1933 , the old V8 engines were depleted , and for their own reasons , ( in the height of the depression ! ) , Lincoln decided to introduce ANOTHER , slightly smaller version of the V12 . ( reduced to 381.7 c.i. , 130 hp ) Cars fitted with this version were now referred to as the K.A. Series . K.B. series continued as before . In 1934 , a rethink led to BOTH K.A. and K.B. V 12 engines being replaced by an updated 414 c.i. version of the V 12 . The letters A and B now referred to different wheelbase lengths. In 1935 , further simplification led to both series being called simply the 'K Series ' This was the situation up to the end in 1940 ; the only FURTHER complication ( after 1936 ) being the introduction of the completely different ' Lincoln Zephyr' powered by a different , smaller and cheaper V 12 which owed more to Ford's ' V8 ' than to the exclusive K Series engine . The Zephyr was a beautiful , modern design , aimed at the middle / upper medium priced market of the Buicks / Oldsmobile / Chryslers etc price ranges but with the seeming cachet of being V 12 powered. It was a very different animal to the rare , high quality 'K series ' however .

Lincoln Model K in the late 1930s, and 1949-51, based priced Lincoln are the only ones that uses a 2 piece split windshield.

Another beautiful car. I think you're right, there is a Mercedes Benz look to it. And then there's that delicate looking hood ornament. And I was surprised the trunk is so big. Anyway, for WYR I'd go with the '39 Lincoln K and the Zephyr.

I'd take a Lincoln Zephyr over anything else you listed. Don't know why, but I've always ;oved those cars.

Oh, one other thing, in the era of parallel parking, in many cities/states it was Illegal to exit the car on the street side!!!

Maybe the switches in the back seat passenger side is for the radio. I like the Packard and the Continental. Great show Jay I hope you take your camera with you to the upcoming car show

This is a nice distinctive looking auto. In the WYR, It would be toss up between the Caddy and Packard, both are really beautiful designs imo. The second scenario I'd take Zephyr.😎 video

I'd go for the Packard. Many high-class cars like this have the spark plug wires in metal looms. Imagine, you probably sat in the same seat that England's Queen Mother sat. That Continental was a planned design. What made this unique was that it was the first Cabriolet. When people saw it, they wanted one also, so more were made. The body style was available in both coupe and 4-door models.

K you beat me to it.. I was going to mention that the front end and grill reminded me of a Mercedes nice car Second Scenario .can't decide between the Continental and the Zephyr

My opinion, but $156,000 equivalent 2023 dollars is insane for the K Lincoln. As the song by Dione Warwick said…”walk on By”.

1st choice, Packard; 2nd choice, Zephyr AND Continental. I can dream, can't I?

Hi Jay. I would have been interested to see the suspension on this one, to know whether it's to the generic Ford plan, or something more sophisticated. It was good to see the engine, as I had wondered whether the senior Lincoln would share a different version of the same V12 with the Zephyr, but it's an entirely different engine. Cheers.

Jay, isn’t the “Baby Grand” a Chevy 490? Not a Chevy 409…😂 The green ‘39 is definitely influenced by Gordon Buerhig’s Cord 810/812, not in the front, but in the body from the cowl back. Oh…and she would be referred to as the “Queen Mum” by the Brits.

Gotta take the caddy every time.

The last gen Model K's are a near miss for me. Appreciate the stab at modernization with faired in headlamps, but overall, they just were not 'beautiful' - almost Teutonic in a way - dignified, stately, slightly tank like and not a looker. - though it does incorporate a lot of streamlie moderne into the design, props. However I do love the cloisonne badging of these years and the gauges, they're almost worth the price of admission. Built to a very standard and beautifully trimmed, but this 12 was always outgunned by its similar rivals - even though the reputation was that serious old money - as opposed to Hollywood money - bought 'K' Lincolns (or Pierce Arrows as long as they were available). Zephyr was another creature entirely. WYR 1) 39 Packard 12 2) Tough - the K is a better car, the Continental is a styling masterpiece. If the K is the LeBaron Roadster though it's super rare (production = 2), so yeah, I'll build a garage for it. Finally, the Royal car was a LeBaron bodied convertible sedan (many pictures of George VI and Queen Elizabeth riding in that), not sure how this sedan fits in with the tour.
