The 1939 Mercury we pulled from a small garage in New Jersey is one of the nicest originals we have seen, but it's current engine will not budge. After tinkering on it this Fall, Matt decided it really needed a replacement engine. In the last episode we took a spare flathead and installed a Winfield cam, Fenton heads and intake. Today Matt, Steve and Jason are going to work on removing the old boat anchor and breathing some life into the old Mercury. Hopefully by the end we have a running engine in the car!!

Random thought: next time there’s a photo shoot there in the garage, if all of you guys wore period-correct clothes, eyeglasses etc., and took some black and white photos, you would really have some great vintage “time-travel” visuals, maybe for a calendar and poster.

Great idea for new merch. An Iron Trap Garage calendar with one of Matt's builds / cars with the crew of misfits in period clothing including Kate in various costumes from the 30's. I've no doubt that he'd have a hard time keeping them in stock.

How nice to see your engine come to life. In 1959 I bought my 53 Victoria Hardtop. Mileage was way over 150K but I loved it. Had no idea how to rebuild engine, but learned quickly. New crankshaft, new Mains and new rod bearings. I was given a shaved Flattop and a intake with 3 Stromberg holes. They were 97 units. Learnt the hard way. Not enough fuel from factory pump. Not enough vacuum also. Electric fuel pump changed fuel supply. Engine oil pressure was very low. Pulled engine and installed a ground crank with matching bearing set. Now I had pressure. Everything was a new experience. I put another 100K on EAB 1963 engine. Dated my girlfriend and in 63 Married that gal. Its now 2022 and we are still together. BUT, I wish that 1953 2 tone Cream/Green hardtop Victoria FORD was still mine.

The power washing you all did on the original engine to remove all the sludge under the intake was the culprit for all the water in the oil pan.

Congratulations young guys on getting a running engine in it, and congratulations on keeping it 6 volts. BUT, you CAN NOT use those skinny battery cables. You MUST use nice thick 1 gauge cables, or else you will have constant cranking problems that will seem like a weak battery or dying starter. That's because 6 volt starters draw twice the amps as 12 volt starters, and when you double the amps, you square (4 times) the resistance. Since this engine is about 240 cubes, it probably momentarily takes well over 400 amps to break it loose. 4 gauge battery cables simply won't pass enough amps.

A gorgeous car for that age ! Good call on just swapping out the engine ! Apparently the original engine has major issues for that much water to be in the oil pan . Would like to see a tear down video on it , just to find the source of the leak & see what damage was done . Chances are the block is cracked or it had a bad head gasket . Lots of good parts on it . The new engine sounds awesome , a little tweaking & she will be a driving in no time ! Great job Guys !

Its great to see you guys finally got that cool old car to fire.its obvious that she was somebody's baby for a long time. I sure hope you guys take tne conservative approach on this one. Its' such an elegant car, and its been so well cared for that maybe it ought to be a vintage sleeper. I kinda also see a moonshiner, now that you got the hot motor in it. If you don't stray too far from stock on the cosmetics, this is a class act. One more thing you should do, if you have the time. Do a short vid on the original engine. A breif autopsy on what happened, and if it will be possible to get her going again. There's lotsa flathead nuts out here, and i bet most of us would be curious to know the fate of engine # 1.

hey Matt , I see you guys struggling with that " manual chain hoist " , and although it gets the job done , it's a pain in the ass to use & slow . I had electric chain hoist in my shop & 1 man can work a motor in or out with a push of a button ! I just took a quick look on E - BAY , and the prices range from $ 500 - $ 2,200 , depending on how heavy you want to get & with or without trollies NEW / USED , ect. ect. . A 1 TON SINGLE PHASE 120 VOLT would be all you'll ever need for what you work on. I had the heavier ones cause I was swinging MACK engines all the time , and 1 man could swing one of those hassle free ! ( there a pleasure to work with) give it some thought you won't regret getting one ! THE MACK GUY

Ok guys i see a ballast resistor on the fire wall if you are using it dont ! on 6 volt you dont need it only on 12 volt what it do is on a cold start up it lets 12 volt to the coil and as it warms up drops to 6 volts so if you use it on 6 volts then it is not going to run on 3 volts when its warm same for that other coil you had maybe it was for a 12 volt system with a light bulb resistor
