Inspection says 1985. Unstuck engine, wouldn't start. Removed the head and did a leak-down test. Rings good. Gave it a valve job, runs great now. Idle adjustment cam rusted stuck so the idle speed was high at first. Any comment where you say "the idle is high" will be deleted.
My father was 92 in this video.

I cut my mechanical teeth on these monster straight 8s back in the fifties. I had my first paid job at a garage and the owner was very skilled and kind enough to walk me through each repair or adjustment he made. These engines were whisper quiet, had a lot of low and middle rpm torque and did not beat themselves up with high rpm operation. They could cruise all day at 60 mph and got about 16 mpg on low octane regular gas. They were hooked up to the then new fluid drive transmissions in Buick,Cadillac and Pontiac and Oldsmobile. Coupled with a two barrel single carburetor the cars with these engine/transmission setups were painfully sluggish around town and got poor mileage. As used here and in The US and Europe for every day transportation they were very dependable. There were some race teams that installed blowers and other hot rod stuff and were able to develop race cars using this type of engine. Some were so powerful they could lift the left front tire off the ground when they accelerated on a straight away. In the late fifties the engines were 'hopped up' for drag car use and could turn in upper nineties speed in the quarter mile.The real draw back in passenger car use was the sheer weight and size of the engine which didn't lend itself to being put in smaller cars. They became obsolete in the early fifties but served with distinction for many years prior to that time.

Yeah the Roadmaster and Century had a 950 pound engine, the Special had a lighter 650 pounder. Not good for racing but good for cruising.

Thank you for sharing your story with us! I really enjoy reading stories like this because they make me envision days gone by. I am 35, so I was born in 83, but I have been in love with cars since before I could drive...legally. My mom had a 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner with a 426 Hemi and a Hurst 4 speed that was the holy grail of Mopars with the Hemi, dual 4 barrel carbs, the Hurst 4 speed, AND it was Plum Krazy, but she traded it to my uncle for a 1968 Ford Galaxie 500 station wagon when she found out that she was pregnant with my sister and the next day my uncle's girlfriend rammed it head on into a tractor trailer and put the Hemi in the front seat. She walked away with a couple of scratches because she was thrown from the car, but needless to say the Roadrunner was totaled. My dad had a 1957 Chevy Bel Air 210 post with a 327 and a 4 speed back then. I would've loved to have been in my teens in the 50s and 60s, it was a golden age in the American car market.

Those old OHV engines that required valve lash setting while running were one big pain in the ass. Always wound up with oil everywhere. Good to see the old man up and interested.

I erred on the side of too loose rather than too tight. Too tight is bad, too loose doesn't make much difference.
@ravenfeather7087
@ravenfeather7087 6 лет назад
Yep. Too tight you can burn the valves. Too loose a little noisy. Used to do that adjustment myself. Try that on a modern car. But in those days if you got 100 K out of a car you were doing good.

@highwatercircutrider
@highwatercircutrider 6 лет назад
My father Eddie and his Army buddy Earl drove to California from Michigan to look for jobs after WWII in 1945/46. They drove a 1941 Plymouth down route 66 pretty much wide open all the way there. They couldn't even find service station jobs in California after about two weeks (dad was an Army trained mechanic and truck driver), he fully epected to find work. Disappointed, they drove the old Plymouth back home (again wide open in the desert areas). When they got to Detroit, Michigan (near broke), a connecting rod began knocking. They pulled the oil pan off the worn out engine and removed rod end cap off the loose connecting rod. Dad said they cut off a piece of leather belt and put it on the crankshaft , then reinstalled the rod cap down tight over the leather. They then pushed the car to a nearby used car lot, started it up for a minute or two, drove into the dealer, sold the car, and hitch hiked the rest of the way home to Yale, Michigan.

nachos it was a used car built a year before the war and driven during the war. who knows how well it was maintained during the war with ‘rationing’ of gas and oil in effect before my dad bought it. He did say those old ‘solid lifter’ engines had to have valves adjusted pretty often and hardly any engine could go over 40,000 with out a valve grind/ rebuilt top end.

Squeeze bottle with gas and 2 cycle mix. Fill up the float bowl of the carb through the vent tube. It will run long enough for the fuel pump to refill the float bowl. The two cycle oil gives some initial lube to the top side of the piston rings. Your dad is awesome.

@hyzercreek
@hyzercreek 7 лет назад
That sort of restoration is fun but costs way more than you get back on cars like this. This car in showroom quality restoration is worth only around $15,000 because it's 4 door and a Special, but I would spend over $30,000 to make it that way. If it was a 2 door Century convertible with the 320 it would be worth $50,000 so I would do it. I'm just fixing everything mechanically and maybe later I'll get a paint job and do the seats. That's it.

The nice thing about the Buick being a over head valve engine verses the GM flat head when the head and valves needed serviced you take the head off and take it to the machine shop . long time ago there were people that came to your garage to redo the valves on the flat head block and today thats a long lost art.

I have always had/have a obsession with straight six but straight eights are an interesting piece of machinery. The straight six was used by Ford here in Australia till 2016. Even till this day the straight six format has proven to be more reliable then the vee six used by competitors. I have heard these straight eights had balancing issues unlike straight sixes that don't (not sure if that's true or not). Either way still cool to see and hear these beasts running

Nice. Always loved that wong wong wong cranking sound of these Art Deco era engines. My dad would adjust the valves on these in a different manner. He would start it and run it hot. Then shut it down, disable the fuel, and with a bump starter, turn the engine over, and adjust it on the "fly". This way you made no mess. You do have to be mindful of the starter and burning it out.

Started great. Did the engine management light go off and did the sat nav still work? Joking aside the old fella looks happy. Well done.

Sounds like a good runner, have you done any restoration since this was done or are you just driving it?

Drive it almost every day spring to fall. Maybe some day I'll paint it.

Nice, that's what it was made for. A brother in law had a '37 with the "economy" small I8, I did some work on it and drove it around a bit. I'd love to find a prewar Packard senior, 160 or 180 sometime, but would settle for a prewar higher end Buick pretty easily. Nice old cars.

I'm guessing around 100 pounds. Almost broke my back trying to set it back in soft and easy so as not to crush the gasket. But I got it!

Cant wait to hear my 49 Roadmasters Rivs straight 8 fire! She was locked up, and now turns free after some soaking.....
@hyzercreek
@hyzercreek 7 лет назад
Do a compression test. The 49 Roady had the 320 engine, the compression should be around 120 at sea level. These engines if they sit for many years the humidity gets in and the valves rust and lose compression. Let me know how they test.

Will do! Much work before that though! She sat in the woods of Michigan for 30 plus years......But to me worth saving at any cost!

Very nice indeed. That idle was high, not at the end of the video though. Sounded good. And I'm not telling the man who set it 30 years ago.
@hyzercreek
@hyzercreek 7 лет назад
The reason for the high idle was the linkages in on the side of the carb were all rusty from sitting 30 years and the return spring wasn't strong enough to pull it back all the way.

@hyzercreek

Good point. But the big change was from the 1932 Buick to the 1936. It went from old fashioned horseless carriage to modern car in only 4 years. By 1940 people were getting used to the new look.

With my experience once the engine is started backfires aren't able to travel up the intake manifold, but safety first Also- was the fast idle to help clean things out?, seemed a tad bit fast especially for how cold it looks there lol From where i live it never snows

1:06 A test that will give an indication if the low compression is a valve or a ring problem is the so-called wet compression test, do the normal compression test and then squirt a little oil through the spark plug hole and do another test, if the rings are the problem the oil will seal the rings to the bore and the compression will increase, if the valves are the problem the compression will remain low.
