One thing I like about your restoration videos is you don't polish the case, you just clean the dirt, I am on the same page with you here, I like to preserve originality as much as I can

Thank you for the comment. That’s right. It’s a strange world when it comes to restoring a vintage or antique item. Certain items are totally fine to polish and make it shinny like new, while certain items such as a watch you must leave the case and dial untouched to be considered a proper restoration.

@@TimelessHistoryChannel Hi Omega Entusiast. I just got my Dad's 1950s Mido Multifort back from the watchmaker. He cleaned, oiled and adjusted. It looks good and is running and seems to keep time pretty well, but he said that some of the parts needed to be replaced (some rust he said). He said he could not get the parts. Would you know who could help me get my dad's watch repaired, someone who might have access to parts for a 1950s Mido Multifort. It has a center second hand. Thanks!

@@markwoolard6745 Unfortunately, I would not know where to guide you to locate these parts. Certain rusty parts I am sure can be cleaned. If you're unable to locate the parts you'll need to ask your watch maker what caliber is your watch movement. Then try searching on website such as Ebay for spare parts or a complete movement for your watch maker to strip it down to use the parts.

Great job! From doing so many Mido bumpers like this, I'd offer one suggestion for newbies to watch restoration... it's MUCH easier to replace the part at 20:33 without the balance and pallet fork in place. It's very hard to do when the watch is wound up and running. In fact, I'd advise those new to this to take that balance out after removing the bumper to avoid catastrophe.

My Uncle wore a Mido purchased in 1937. It was a marvelous watch with a bumper,made at a time when men with average incomes wore Elgins or Hamiltons. I wished I had my Uncles watch today.

Oh My, great restoration !! Love the way you know how to adjust the second hand to sweep ( only a Doc. would know that). Your video's are incredible, perfect knowledge for old & new in the vintage collecting. Put that Mido on our site, it would sell.

haha. It is common for a center second watch to have this problem prior or after a service. But it is a very minor issue that can be easily fixed if you know what you're doing.

I am loving the rebuilds/restorations of the various pieces. It's easy to see what enjoyment you must feel upon completion of the service or restoration. The visual change after completion of the restoration must be exceedingly rewarding and satisfying for the watchmaker. Great work to observe and with some lovely background music pieces supporting your videos, transform them into Zen experiences. Truly a great way for a watch enthusiast to spend 30 or 40 minutes. Splendid !

A Taubert cased watch. Stainless was a new metal and very difficult to machine in the early 1930's. FB/Borgel/Taubert was among the very first to invest in the machinery to work with stainless aka ever Brite. They made the waterproof cases for Movado, Mido, Patek and West End. Their waterproof system was a greased cork gasket in the stem/crown and the lead gasket that seated the screwed in case back. On their manual wind cases their was also an inner dust cover that kept the movement dust free and moisture free. A signature feature was the decagonal case back. Great video.

I am a WW2 living historian and l have 3 Elgins and a Hamilton watches. I love these old watches. They are comfortable and not huge monsters on the wrist.

need to know the size first. Then you can try ordering one from www.ofrei.com. But I would recommend that you have a watchmaker do it for you.

FYI, the serial number dates this watch to around 1952 to 1954. Also, I believe this movement 0917 not a 917P - the 917P does not have a bumper wind.

One other thing you forgot to do is lubricate the new case washer you installed to help the case stay water resistant and extend the life span of the washer, I use a silicon type, the same used for the crown washer

I do that actually, just not in the video. I have made a video not too long ago to inform people to apply watch gasket lubrication to apply around the case back gasket and the crown gasket.

Sir, your videos are so informative. But I request you to use the zoom lens so that we can have good view of the parts that make up the movement. Also, how can we know which screwdriver to use for which screw so that we don't damage the screw head. Is there a manual gor this or is it gained by experience. Remember, I was the one who asked you why you fix the pallet fork and and train wheel bridge to the base plate before cleaning and you gave me the reply that it is dismantled and cleaned, but that part of the video is not shown. I enjoy your videos. Keep up this great work. Stay safe.

I am a retired watchmaker, and I see that you did a pretty decent job, but you could have gone the full 9 yards by cleaning every jewel with peg wood to make sure there is no dry oil or debris where the pivot of each wheel rides on especially the jewels for the balance wheel and the jewels of the fork ends, through my experience, I've always found debris in jewels especially in a watch from the 1940's because the ultrasonic cleaning methods do not always remove all of the old dried up oil, you should have also had the dial refinished to make it look brand new and you should have removed the old radium from the hands and replace it with new radium, the watch would look magnificent with just a little more work. Think about it.

When it comes to restoring a vintage watch according to a the vintage watch grading requirement, dial refinishing, relume, and case polish are a big no no to do. But if you are just a watchmaker repairing watches for everyday individual passing by your shop, that is a different story and you can restore how you like it. I do go through each jewels to make sure that there are no dirt or debris before and after going through the ultrasonic cleaning process. But you cannot include everything in a video. Not to mention that, I am not making these videos to teach someone how to service a watch. I am just showing my clients the basic of what I need to go through when I service watch.

Mido was an excellent watch in their day on par with omega and Rolex, had they increased their case size earlier and produced a divers watch who knows where they would be now.

I have a Mido 816 movement, which is very similar. I am still pretty new to this hobby, so finding a video for a similar movement is very helpful. Where did you find the new caseback gasket?

For the gasket, you may need to find a local watch repair shop to have him go through his gasket to fit the right one on your watch.

As long as you enjoy wearing it then that all that matters. These are vintage watches. A wrist watch is supposed to be small originally.

Love the video, good concise explanations of what/why you are doing, and the video quality is great. I must ask if this is a 1940s watch or 1950s watch? The reason I ask is because the balance has an Incabloc shock mount for the cap jewels. Did this not start to come into common usage in like 1953? Or did I get that wrong?

Thank you! Good question. Shock balance did not exist in early 40s. But it was introduced in around 1943/44. You will find many 1940’s Omega with the shock balance.

Incabloc was patented in 1934, it first saw use in rugged use watches like Mido.

The Incabloc style in this watch first debuted in 1938. Their earlier shock springs looked totally different, but did indeed show up in the early Midos from 1934.

Great video on this Mido watch with a bumper auto, Do have a question; the waterproof gasket you could not replace it with a original lead gasket ? And also did you replace a cork donut ring to waterproof the crown ?

Lead/metal gasket is obsolete and not as great as rubber gasket. Some watchmakers may still have some lead gaskets in their workshop. To be safe, better to still use rubber. The cork case tube gasket was still good so I did not replace it. Have replaced them in the past with rubber gasket.

I get nervous when you grip that delicate dial with pointed steel tweezers. And the hands too. Won't that make minute marks on them? I knew an elderly watch repairer who left painful attack marks on the hands and dial aperture of his precious 1951 steel Rolex moon phase!! Do the big names use steel pointed tweezers on their work benches? How is it that the handling points of their hands are flawless even under magnification? Precise rubber tipped tweezers?

Hi, good questions. I have plastic tweezers, but I seldom take them out to use unless maybe replacing a battery for a friend's watch. It is good and most safe to use a plastic tweezer to handle dial and hands. But a metal tweezers is a lot easier to use and handle. I personally use my metal tweezers for almost everything except when I need to curve the hands a slight bit I'll need to use the plastic tweezers. It all depends on how you handle, control, and the experience you have with using a tweezers. I've not scratch a hand or dial and the watchmakers that I know never had an issue either. That said, there are many clumsy watchmakers out there as well. That is why there are many serviced watches that show marks or scratches on their dial and hands. Tip is, if you need to apply pressure to set or bend, switch to plastic.

Since you like to correct my grammar, I think you meant "said" and not "sez". To make things clear, I have repeated myself several times in a few of my restoration videos. If you want to keep the value of your watch, or have an easier time to resell it, or to keep it as original as possible, then you must leave the case unpolished and the leave the dial untouched. However, feel free to do whatever you wish to the watch if you have no issue with the three things mentioned above. No one is stopping anyone.

When it comes to a watch you just avoid case polish, refinish the dial and relume. When you restore a car you can polish. Not every vintage things can be restored in the same way. :)
