1940's Morning Routine 

Sage, I love that your videos provide a sense of how important a role like “housewife” actually was when we tend to stereotype it a lot in the modern era. Especially in wartime, a housewife was much more than a pretty face or a maid. She had to be a thrifty economist and accountant to make each penny and ration card last, a nutritionist to keep her family healthy with very limited food supplies, a talented tailor to use what precious little fabric they had, and even a bit of a handyman to fix any household problems that arose when the men were away fighting. All this while keeping on a brave beautiful patriotic face despite almost certainly having loved ones in danger overseas or being in danger herself from the Blitz. It makes me appreciate my women ancestors for their remarkable strength even when I have chosen a much different path for how I will be a strong woman. Bravo, ma’am!

My grandma was 20 in 1940, it is so fun to imagine her doing these things! She just passed last year at 102 💗

My grandmother was born in 1908. I’m 54 now. My grandmother kept this routine her entire life. I loved staying with her and my grandfather during my childhood in the summers and up until her death in the early 1990s. It was a simpler time I miss so much.

The thing I love most about your videos, sage, is that it’s like history meets educations meets style or beauty! Please never stop making videos. 😊

In Australia we had a wonderful programme called, “Back in time for Dinner” . A family of 5 were chosen to go back in time and each episode was the next decade starting with 1900’s. They had to live and sustain themselves exactly how it would have been. There was a similar show in the UK where the family had to live in wartime Britain which was equally fascinating. Everything had to be authentic , clothes, food, jobs, transport etc.

Honestly, your videos are an inspiration for me .... I'm 16 years old,and since I was 14 years old I've loved the lifestyle of yesteryear,I've changed most of my clothes,accessories and decorations to those of other times. I don't usually fit in today's society,but I've been able to adapt,because it's partly inevitable,since there is a great dependence on technology. But anyway,your videos are really wonderful and interesting,I learn a lot. Kisses!!!

I love this so much 😭 it makes me ache with nostalgia for a time I never knew. The styles were so simple and pretty, there was value put on the housewife and her duties, and it seems like pleasure was taken in the smaller things in life. I am a housewife and have spent all of my 20s being one and it has been hard because it isn't valued anymore in the same way, especially as someone so young and with no children. I absolutely love the dive into history here in a way that I can relate to in my own way ❤

I can remember being taught to do a lot of these things as a child. I’m in my early 40’s, but my great grandma Edna taught me show to be a little lady, my grandpa (who raised me mostly) taught me cooking, cleaning, the exact sciences of making the perfect bed every morning, ironing, gardening, and so many other things my mother was not there to show me. The vintage dressing and beauty (makeup and vintage hair) were traits I taught myself. The life of a housewife was often not easy or glamorous…but kudos to those ladies who made the best of it for their families and themselves! Ps. I love your tutorials ❤

I live in the U.S. and found you today. I was born in the 70s but have always been mesmerized by the 30s-60s. Thanks for being amazing.

My mother was born in 1953. Both of her parents played their part in the war effort. She picked up some of the traditional routines such as airing the bed when making it in the morning. She also picked up some of Granddad's habits from his time in the army such as always ensuring that shoes were polished regularly and ironing shirts (and blouses) in a particular way - I can't remember what order it had to be in, though

Now I am a grandmother myself and I still keep the routine of airing out my bed , opening my window to let the fresh air in regardless of the weather ! Thank you for your videos ❤

I appreciate you sharing all the War Time routines with us. Times were so different back then, we rationed our food, clothing, rubber, butter, tea, coffee, chocolate and even some of our personal items as well like toiletries as well, like Vaseline. Most people gladly sacrificed our daily intake of meat so our fellow soldiers that were fighting Hitler and fighting for our freedoms with full belly’s. I’m so proud of English, Australian, American, and of course other housewife’s sacrificed for all of us today. They stepped up and everyone was involved. We don’t realize just how powerful we all can be when we decide to put out differences aside for the greater good of our countries. We our a force to be reckoned with, when we all work together for our survival. I’d gladly sacrifice for Australia 🇦🇺 and England to see another day. And this video is a reminder for what Ukrainians are going through right now. Even the Russian people I’m sure don’t want a war. Anyway thanks for this video, it’s a reminder to keep things in perspective. God forbid any of our great countries see War again. I hope not. Anyway God Bless ❤

My grandma passed not too long ago... These videos make me think about her, I try to imagine how was her life when she was young🥲❤️

First time watching-my daughter told me about you. I always loved the vintage look & your videos seems to bring a peace of a more quieter time. The one thing I remember, looking back, mom always had dad's supper ready right on time when he came home from work & the food was always put on table.

Maybe this was the routine for wealthy urbanites of that era. My grandparents on Nebraska farms would have lived quite differently. First of all, the woman applies more makeup in this video than my grandmothers wore their entire lives. Secondly, clothes were handmade, expensive, and rarely cleaned, so the woman would have had an apron on during all chores. Farms of that era did not have indoor plumbing, so the morning would have started with fetching water from the well. It would have been boiled on the stove for washing. Right away in the morning, the cows also had to be milked and eggs gathered. There would have been 4-5 children running around. All men would have worn denim overalls, all the time. My grandmothers were amazing cooks, and wouldn't have been caught dead reading a cookbook to make scrambled eggs. They had large vegetable gardens, and canned their own produce and even meat for the long winter, which was kept in a "potato cellar" under the house. The farm would have had a tough dog, who lived outdoors, and never came inside, to protect the livestock from predators like coyotes. A gun rack would also have been by the door to quickly deal with predators as well. Eggs and cream would have been brought into town to sell for things like sugar that could not be grown on the farm. Rationing was underway from 1942-1947, so ration books and stamps would have had to be maintained. The kids would have had only one pair of shoes, and most clothing would have been hand-me-downs from older siblings or cousins. The adults all would have been smoking. The meal would have begun with a prayer. The kids would have been bundled up to make the long walk to school, or even taken a horse-drawn wagon. Smaller towns may have had a one-room schoolhouse. Farm work would have begun when the sun came up to maximize daylight. There would have been a barn for large animals, featuring a hay loft on the second level. A grain bin, chicken coup, machine shed, and other outbuildings would have been common. Men repaired all vehicles and tractors themselves. Everything was repaired and reused until it absolutely could not serve any purpose. They would have slaughtered their own animals (my grandmas could snap a chicken's neck with one quick twist), cream would have been churned into butter by hand, bread would have been baked not store-bought, and refrigeration would have been limited. The beds would have had thick, uneven feather mattresses with layers of heavy quilts to keep the family warm in unheated rooms. Kids would have shared beds and bedrooms. There may not have been an indoor toilet, so the family would have had to put on boots and coats to use the outhouse in winter. There was no store-bought toilet paper, so thank goodness for the Sears catalog! Families rarely saw dentists or doctors, almost never ate in restaurants, and took trains to visit family in other towns. Not that there were many family members in other towns, as many families lived their whole lives in the same area. My maternal grandfather dropped out of school in 6th grade and was hired out by a neighboring farmer. The only time he ever left the county was when he went to fight in World War II. After the war the veterans would frequent VFW clubs where they could talk with other vets with similar experiences. Wives and children were never told what they experienced in the war. All of this is from what my parents and grandparents taught me about how they grew up.

This is the first time I’ve seen one of your videos, but you’ve just inspired me to make a 1940s breakfast for my husband (which I thank you for because my tomatoes are about to go bad)! Also, your hair and makeup are beautiful on you.

My dad was a teenager in the 40s, and received a farm deferment during the war so he could stay on the land and continue to raise food. Half a mile away was a conference centre where German POWs were housed. Dad said he could hear them singing in German, and one of the songs said, "I'd like to see my home again." A very pivotal time in history, and my favourite era. I still have ration books from Mom and Dad's families. Lots of love from the US 💕

I was kind of sad when “the morning” ended, I wanted to see the rest of your day. PS: I was inspired to repeat your 1940’s morning routine at my home including the breakfast scramble & tomato on toast. I put 40’s radio programs on my playlist (complete with commercials) while I tidied up the kitchen and made beds after airing them out. 😊

Wow now I have an idea how strenuous my great-grandmothers life was like back in the day!

This video brought back memories of my childhood. My dad was born in Germany in 1910. Came to US with his mom at 18. She didn’t want him drafted in the army. My mom was born in 1915. I was born in 1954. She dressed in shirt dresses though the skirts were full. She worked as a bookkeeper and he as machinist. We had crank windows! Hot tea was the beverage served at dinner. We had Postum for breakfast.

You have captured & live many moments that I saw as a child growing up in the 1950's. My mother, aunts, etc still slept with their heads wrapped to preserve their once a week hairstyles, the care you give to your face & styles of your hair; the meals you prepare, the radio you have (we had one very near yours), the dresses, writing letters/notes which I was taught to do & still to this day. I see many extras that take me back to the lifestyles that had poured over from the 1940-s. Thank you muchly! 🥰

Absolutely adore your videos. I too use wartime cook books for almost every meal we cook & tend to use most UK ration quantities. It's very healthy too. I also have my own little victory vegetable patches & green house etc in my garden. I have a new wartime garden to kitchen book to plan what I am growing this year. Although nothing as wonderful as your house but I have bought many vintage items & have created a vintage kitchen & dinning room that I love. I am seriously ill & disabled so this lovely way of life has given me something to really enjoy. It's so exciting when I see you have uploaded a new video. Please keep posting 💕

At the start of the 1940s, my great grandma was 22 and by the start of the 1950s was 32 with 3 children and a husband. I always found her stories of this time period enlightening, yet hard!!

I really love this! My Mom got married in 1948.She was a wonderful Housewife and Mother.She did much of the things you show here.Hoe I wish we could go back to a simpler time

I was ten years old in 1948. While this is a pretty picture you're painting, this is not how most families, including mine, lived post-war.

This is such a great video! I was born in 1970 in Colorado and spent a lot of time with both of my Grandmothers. Although they had very different lives, they were similar in more ways than not. I learned so much from them! Sometimes I feel like I grew up in the 40's and the 70's.
