'A tribute to the workers of the British Aircraft Industry'. Men and women in a factory in the North-West of England set themselves the task of building a Wellington bomber in the record time of 30 hours. Constructing in their own time, the workers donate the bonus they got to the Red Cross 'Aid to Russia Fund'.
The cameras capture the whole process of the construction in record time through to the test pilot taking off in the plane, ahead of schedule.

This bomber was built at the Weybridge factory in Surrey, England. I started work there as an Apprentice in 1948 . Many of the skilled men I assisted then( very few women post war) had worked through the war and on Wellington bombers. One man told me he was on that project but he didn't say that it was made over the weekend. I do remember his comment that a lot of planning was done to ensure that those actually working on it were sent to their workplace on or in the bomber on time to do their bit and then get out of the way of the next person who would get into that workspace. There were even people of camera ready to step in when their place was clear. Consequently more man ( person) hours were spent on that plane than those flowing down the production lines. The total production of Wellingtons during the war yeas I read was 11,390. That might have been the most produced British bomber type

My grandfather was a Tipperary man that went to London for work in 1938, he was nearly 30 at the time, he married a Kerry woman in 1940, they lived in Eastcote avenue Surrey, he was a member of the Homeguard and worked on the production line of the Wellington bomber as a Stamper, what is a stamper do you know, anyway they came back home to Tipperary in 52, his name was Maurice Gallagher, don't know if he was there in 48.

Broughton, Flintshire - Vickers Wellington LN514 was a Vickers Wellington bomber built in 1943 in record time, as part of a British propaganda effort during the Second World War. The bomber was constructed in 23 hours and 50 minutes, and took off 24 hours and 48 minutes after the first parts of the airframe had been laid down, beating the previous record of 48 hours set by an American factory. It was constructed at the Vickers-Armstrongs factory in Broughton, Flintshire (Wikipedia)

Amazing. Unsung heroes of w.w.2

Some of the true Hero's were those Ferry Pilots. Often young women who would fly bombers and fighter planes alone . No flight engineers ,navigators or co pilots .They had to fly by following land marks.

great vidoe and well done to the team who built the aircraft. If only the young of today would take inspiration from this and get stuck in we could be back beating the world.

.... I couldn't assemble an Airfix model kit in that time... God bless all the factory workers during WWII... if they could only see how their world turned out in 2021... they would probably have stayed at home

I'm glad the British were able to survive their multiple defeats in 1939 and 1940 and finally prevail over Germany but I wonder why they keep saying "beat the Americans!" -- I thought it was the Germans we were trying to beat. The real question was how long did it take to make the next Wellington after the movie was made. An interesting movie.

What a wonderful video, this just shows how much pride we once had. It's a shame that young people today have no loyalty or respect for their country..

Does anyone have information about this aircraft's operational history? I tried Google but no luck. That would complete the story of a fascinating design and unique aircraft.

LN514 went on to serve with 19 Operational Training Unit at Kinloss, survived the war and was struck off command on 11 March 1948.

Imagine cameras in the days of the Roman Empire… But this video seems almost the same. To see these people building a machine to kill other humans and such a crude disposable machine. The quality of this plane would be poor only meant to last 30 missions. There's a reason why you don't see them today. But this film sure has a really antique ring to it. A reminder that the world is a troubled and violent place in those days. Today it's much more violent and today it's much more troubled. What a legacy to pass on to your children. The only good politician is a dead one for they throw us into war like disposable sheep and civilization ceases to inspire and grow. Just death. What an interesting archive film showing people making with their own two hands war

Sergeant Lewis Alan White DFM (Distinguished Flying Medal) (20) 626213 (Wireless Operator/ Air Gunner) Royal Air Force, 75 Sqdn. "EVERLASTING REMEMBRANCE OF OUR DEAR SON. MAM, DAD AND FAMILY" Wellington IC T2463 AA-E The aircraft took off at 21.15 hrs on 20th September1940 from Feltwell, Norfolk to bomb the invasion barges moored in channel ports. The aircraft was hit by AA fire from Alpha battery sited west of Oostende. As a result of which the aircraft caught fire and crashed in flames at 23.00 hrs that evening. The pilot and Captain that night, P/O. Michael Braun alone baled out and landed within the small town of Leffinge, just West of Oostende, Belgium. He was severely wounded, apparently, according to locals who recall the incident, by small arms fire from the occupying forces. He died from his injuries in Oostende Hospital that same night. The other 5 crew, consisting of distressingly few physical remains, were buried in one coffin in Leffinge churchyard.
