I colorized, restored and created a sound design for this video of Wonderful San franscisco and Los Angeles1940s, we can clearly see what is happening in broad daylight, We start with a still shot in downtown San Francisco, a lot of people walking in the street, cars and streetcars, we have a long drive in the middle of the night in downtown San Francisco and Los angeles
Video Restoration Process:
✔ FPS boosted to 60 frames per second
✔ Image resolution boosted up to HD
✔ Improved video sharpness and brightness
✔ Colorized only for the ambiance (not historically accurate)
✔added sound design only for the ambiance
✔restoration:(stabilisation,denoise,cleand,deblur)
Please, be aware that colorization colors are not real and fake, colorization was made only for the ambiance and do not represent real historical data.

The first scene in San Francisco is looking north up Powell St from Market St. The Flood building is on the right and One Powell St . The Bank of Italy, on the left. At night in LA . The atmosphere is rather foggy but as you travel you can see that you go through the area of Little Toyko. A little later ( 5:00) the neon sign with The Turquoise Room is the Hotel Rosslyn building at 5th and Main St. Traveling further down past all the old buildings of the Historic Core of old Los Angeles.

I didn't recognize the night film of L.A. until @8:40 This is the North side of First Street at San Pedro - about 4 blocks from L.A. city hall, Between 1942 and 1947 (Easier to see as the Department store was named after the intersection),. This area was considered "Little Tokyo," around the height of the forced relocation of *Americans* of Japanese ancestry/origin into _Internment/Concentration camps._ Nearly all of the city’s Japanese residents were forcibly removed, leaving behind hundreds of shuttered and abandoned businesses in that area. Those *Americans* unjustly imprisoned ended up losing between $2 billion and $5 billion worth of property in 2017 dollars during the war, which only some received very minor reparations for. I mention this as some here romantically look back on this era as if it was a much better time - well not for all.

Great video! Probably shot as backdrops for a movie in the early to mid 1940s. Those are very old streetcars with cow catchers, and the women have relatively short skirts so it is pre 1947. In early 1947 the New Look came out, with its longg full skirts and after that few women would be seen in SF in the old short skirts, according to my mother who lived and worked in SF then.

Actually, it's the very END of the '40's. 1949, specifically. "Canadian Pacific", a movie on the marquee, was released in '49. Might even be 1950.
@paulmezhir8354
@paulmezhir8354 Год назад
The "New look" you refer to was, in a fashion sense, was so groundbreaking not for the length of women's skirts but for the extravagant use of yards and yards of fabric. The issue was one of the end of the widely-helf moral belief that wasteful excess was an affront to the sensibilities of depression and wartime rationing of many raw materials. The skirt length simply dropped slightly below the knee. Yes, the skirts were longer than sleek, figure-hugging fashions of the flapper era, but they were not, by any measure, long skirts.

Great job NASS. The film shows the four streetcar tracks on Market Street. The four streetcar tracks ran the length of Market Street, the outer pair for the publicly owned Municipal Railway (Muni), the inside tracks used by its private competitor, Market Street Railway Co. (MSRy. On May 16, 1944, San Francisco voters approved the acquisition of MSRy, on the premise that it would be paid for by Muni’s increased wartime profits. The nearly two-to-one vote came after a vigorous campaign by the newly elected Mayor, Roger Lapham, for consolidation of the systems.The two systems officially became one at 5:00am on September 29, 1944, when Mayor Lapham piloted an old MSRy streetcar out of Muni’s Geary Division. The removal of the outer two tracks began in December of 1944. So this film was probably prior to September 29th of 1944 when all four tracks were still in service.

The daytime footage is hard to date beyond that it is obviously during the war. Lots of servicemen and most of the cars appear to have ration stickers on their windshields. The night footage is probably late spring - early summer of 1949 based on the movie marque at 5:16. Canadian Pacific was released in May of that year.

The clarity of the opening scene is amazing. It looks like it was filmed yesterday, apart from the yellow cab looks faded. What amazes me (in addition to the amazing work done by NASS) is why were these scenes filmed originally? NASS has found these street scenes from all over the world just showing everyday folk going about their own business.

Those "people" need to wake up. Streetcars are coming back and have come back in many cities in North America. It was a tragic mistake to ever get rid of clean, pollution free electric transit vehicles and replace them with soot belching diesel buses. Electric transit didn't die a natural death, it was murdered by the corporate greed of General Motors, Big Oil, the rubber tire industry and others.
