My aunt bought a '42 Cadillac and soon had to put it up on blocks due to the gas shortage during WW 2. In the late '40's as a kid, I remember riding in it for 30 miles while the engine made a terrific knocking noise. Stopping at a garage, a loose drain plug was detected. They filled the engine, because no oil was found, started it up, and off we went again. What a beast.
I love the lines and overall look of the 41 and 42 Caddy's. There were one of these in the original "Godfather" movie which is now 50 years old this year. When I got back into dabbling in old electronics from playing with lots of old cars, the first radio i did a repair and restoration on was from a 41 Caddy. Harley Earl was a styling genius!
How complicated was the radio was it easy or hard to fix.. Harley earl was one of the greatest automotive stylist of all time.. @@What.its.like. The radio took a couple of days to get it 100 percent. On an old car radio, you need to replace the buffer capacitor under the vibrator (usually) and I know a trick to clean the contacts on the vibrator without opening them to clean. Lots "O" work.
when looking at the engine, you failed to notice the position of the exhaust manifolds. you need to get more technical for some of us true car guys. otherwise well done.
It's kinda weird but for the longest time in America the Caddy was the most expensive and ultra luxurious car that everyone wanted to eventually own. All the GM divisions were set up for different classes of people. Only the richest people could afford a Cadillac and it was the car to have when you finally made it up the social network. My grandfather had multiple caddies throughout his lifetime. He had a few classics that are worth big money now.
Yeah mom was like that she bought an Escalade (brother owns it now) that suv was $60k new mom got it for 25k or close to that and used it and then the transmission went and she replaced it and sold to my brother for $3,500.. imagine your the original owner who is ok with losing $56,500 in 16 years that’s insane.. it’s worse with a Mercedes or bmw all of which are appliances now my opinion of course
Tangentially off topic ... At one point I was looking to buy a new car. There's a street in my town with nothing but auto dealerships up and down both sides of the street. I parked at one end, decided I'd walk all the way down one side, then all the way back up the other side to make my decision. I got to the Cadillac dealer, and I rather liked the STS. I was wondering around the cars, and a salesman walked up, asked me what I did for a living. I was a _little_ dumbfounded by this question, but answered that I worked for a company that made elementary, high school, and college textbooks. He kind of wrinkled his nose, said "well, we generally sell to Doctors and Lawyers ... and turned around and left. Needless to say, I walked off the lot, and have never owned a Cadillac. (I bought an Infiniti instead) How does he know how much money I had in the bank, or if my dad just left me a $million bucks, or if I'd won the lottery or whatever. His pompous attitude really made me mad ... as I suppose this rant reveals.
I hate when people get treated like that.. actually a lot of people that have money don’t dress with the fancy shoes or clothes.. to draw attention to them selves. Idk I never owned a Cadillac either a couple Lincoln’s though, I always thought Lincoln had more class.. especially in the 70s and 80s
I just love those early 40's Cadillacs, and particularly the '40 and '41 model years, are all such classics and so beautiful to look at. Nice to see one presented in detail showing all of its accoutrements.
I had one in 1987. MY dad gave it to me I was 17. Blue 4 door with mohair interior. Auto Trans (they were the first I was told) and the flathead V8. Traded it for a VW Rabbit to get to school. Those never went up in value much but they were built like a tank and ran well.
Did you ever see the similarities on side profile looks like a 4 door Lincoln Continental but not the continental from this year the later one.. Lincoln May have copied

that huge radio, for those of us that experienced it an AM tube radio had a unique tone quality, hard to describe but somehow a warm, soothing tone that could lull a kid to sleep in the backseat at night, as I still remember from my parents 55 Bel Air
Easy pick, the Packard any day. Much more elegant and modern design than the Caddy. That Packard straight 8 was an extremely smooth running engine as well.
I totally agree it’s really sad that they went out of business they had so much going for them obviously not at the time that they went bust but they were definitely the luxury brand of America.. man makes me sad
Jay have you ever been talking with someone or in the middle of something and then a real beautiful woman walks by and you just lose your attention span and your train of thought? That is exactly what happened to me during this video. Really beautiful girl named Victoria happened to be hanging out in front of that caddy. That was it for me. I'll have to rewatch this video later on and actually hear the finer points of that. Cadillac I wish I owned that Ford Crown Vicky sitting there in front of that caddy. 17:03 I had a boss back in the mid-'70s, who had a Triumph TR-3. He was driving home on the So. Cal. Freeway (I-5) when something broke in the transmission and the car came to a complete and sudden stop in the fast lane (Just north of Dodger Stadium). The car would not move, pushing in the clutch wouldn't help, putting it in neutral didn't help. He got out of the car, stood at the center divider thinking about what to do next. A drunk guy in a Ford LTD rear-ended the TR-3 at a full 60-mph. WOW, when you saw the TR-3, it was _TOTALED,_ about 3 feet shorter, and the steering wheel went vertically up through the windshield. Had Doug remained in the front seat, he would absolutely have been k'lled.
Cool history on Harley Earl! The engine and engine bay look like they would be hard to work on. When I was a kid, a guy at the top of our street (I lived on a hill) had a Triumph TR-3 and I would walk by it every day on the way to school.
TR3 is a cool car the guy a bought the karman Ghia from had a green one I always wondered where Harley earl came from it’s crazy that he was always just there
Very cool! I just acquired a 42-47 sedan not sure of the year yet I haven't brought it home yet a couple weeks I'll bring it home. I have a cadillac collection. Starting in 40 with my Lasalle 5227c, the 42-47 sedan, a 54 coupe, 56 4dr hdtp, 63 4dr hdtp, 65 convertible, a 78 fleetwood, a couple 79 coupes and a 96 fleetwood and an 08 escalade. No 41 yet though
@What it’s like Spokane WA I have to say the 78 fleetwood lowrider. As I raised my kids in that car. The 63 has been in the family since 64 though. It's my second favorite all the others are in various stages of restoration at the moment. I spent the last couple years building engines for everything. The 54 is a twin turbo ratty caddy I built a few years back

This car looks like it's moving while standing still. Only Harley could do that with a big hulking Cadillac, all body components are massive but well-contoured. I like the '42 to '47 Caddy's even better with those big front fender bulges extending into the front doors. 11:59 Yeah, an armrest on those rear doors wouldn't do anyone much good except as door pull since the rear seat is set so far back. Lots of things have changed in auto engineering, eh? Even the rear doors in a massive Chevy suburban have armrests, rear seat passengers are that close to the front ones. Another great Cadillac video along with the previous Cadillac videos. the Series 63 is a favorite of mine of the 41's next to the 1970 60 Special, I consider the Series 63 the predecessor to the 76-79 Seville. Hard choice between the Cadillac 63 and Packard 160 have to pick the Packard 160; another hard choice between the Triumph 3 or 5, have to go with the 5.
I’m surprised how similar the interior is to my 47 Chevy. Same speedometer, clock, fuel, temp. Etc. The V8 had the exhaust going over the top? That was weird, couldn’t have helped with performance. As for those three chrome accents on the body, I believe they’re called speed lines. Made the car look like it was moving at speed even standing still. PS. TR3 triumph 👍🏼
The Ford flathead V8 was a bad design with the exhaust heat passing all the way through the engine/coolant passages to get to the lower side of the engine from the valves up top... you drove fast very long and the coolant/engine overheated... the Cadillac flathead engine was much more powerful but still didn't have that overheating problem with the heat coming out the top... Ford flathead V8 racers convert their engines to the Cadillac style by using the intake valves/ports as exhaust valves/ports and bringing exhaust heat out the top... gas/air in through the exhaust passages... By buying a Cadillac, you got a 'racing style engine' stock...
I would choose the 1941 Packard 160 and the Triumph TR-7. (The TR-3 and the TR-4 had very narrow cockpits, and the TR-3 had side curtains instead of roll-up windows.) The day/night mirror came out in the 1930's--I believe it was created by an independent inventor and was originally an after-market item, so there was no "first car" to introduce it as original equipment. An automatic switch device was invented in the 1940's, but took forever to catch on--the patent had expired by that time. There used to be after-market Venetian blinds for the rear window, to block the light from bright headlamps. Later, they were seen as kind of nefarious--as if intended to hide sleazy goings-on in back. The original purpose was long forgotten. Villains' cars in old stories would feature them--it was like black hats for Western bad guys.

I'm a sucker for GM fastbacks of the 1940s, so I'd take the Cadillac. and be good to go with that.. Yes, it's true, those old vacuum tube radios had a very nice warm sound, even crackly AM during a thunderstorm. And who wouldn't recognize Mellow Yellow by Donovan?
Hoping to expand it I would love to get into some 90s cars as well as 80s and 70s we do all of the decades really there’s been a couple new cars on here as well if I can get my hands on a Shelby GT 350 I am going to review that car that’s one of the best sounding cars made now.. as well as a Corvette.. but really like the classics vintage and most of all the orphans. Our New Year’s resolution was to cover as many 30s cars as possible that is a really cool era that is being forgotten.
The 1941 Cadiillacs were probably the best and most beautiful Cadillacs of all time. Specially the 61 Sedanette. They are probably even more beautiful than the Eldorado Broughams and the 1959 and even the BEAUTIFUL 1960 models! Their engines wer incredibly smooth and quiet. No wonder why the Army and Navy used those sensational engines in vehicles and landing boats.

Another great job. I believe that _wheelbase_ means absolutely nothing to absolutely everybody except the guy that figured out what the wheelbase would be. Not talking about you my friend, you’re just giving stats.
The Series 63 was an odd duck. More expensive than the 62, but without the Torpedo body, and consequently a lot less sleek and more resemblence to the 61. Never understood it, and not that Cadillac did either (hence the quick disappearing act). Ditto the 67 which was a stretched version, perhaps intended as a budget 75. (Though even more confusingly, the 67 had a longer wheelbase than the more expensive 75) Earl was actually hired in 1928, he was a cosultant for the first LaSalle. GM gave him a trip to Europe as a reward (and perhaps time to figure out the next move). He was hired when he got back and given the just created 'Art and Colour' department to run. Ironically his first major design after that was the 'pregnant' 1929 Buick which was panned at the time and for which Earl blamed the engineers - 'they changed my design'. Maybe yes, maybe no - but after that he got sign off approval. WYR: Packard 160 / TR5

Totally top notch automobile I think 🤩 those print ads were really great too! I'd take this one without hesitation!! The Packard is very nice, but it looks like it should have a chauffeur, this one and even the Lincoln, I could see myself cruising around in. I've always thought the Triumphs were cool. I'd take the 3 or 5. When I was almost of driving age, there were print ads of the TR 7 in just about every magazine we had in the house it seemed, so it was one of a few "dream" cars to me at that time, even though I fully realized that it would be just that! 😊 It has since lost its appeal to me, but the other two are totally cool classics 😎
Great choice the TR7 was one of Jeremy Clarksons favorite cars lol not really he said it was molded from a block of cheese I don’t see anything wrong with them they look cool

Deceit material was super comfortable in Plush it was the way the seats were designed where the bench met the back of the seat the angle in which that happened did it work if that makes sense I think if you put a pillow on the front seat you could make the angle better the front seat isn’t nearly as bad as the backseat but it’s weird because I’ve never been in a luxury car where the seats didn’t work like the seats didn’t work in this car which is really sad because it’s a really nice car

My choices today are the 1941 Lincoln and the Triumph TR3. I'm a little surprised the seats weren't that comfortable. But I did like the overall look of the car. For some reason, the taillights were my favorite part of the car. And that hood ornament. I had a good 😂 at how you'd like to handle tailgaters!

Those "overriders" are know as bumper guards. They are to prevent bumpers at varying heights from becoming entangled with minor, otherwise harmless contact.
Sweet I always thought the bumper guards were the ones that had the rubber pieces attached to them and over riders were the ones without the rubberized pieces I could be wrong
And, by the way, split rims allow you to dispense with the need for expensive tire-mounting equipment. If they are well-made, they can be as good as solid rims. Jim Hall's Chaparral racing cars used split rims, so they worked just fine in high-stress situations.
The "Flying lady" the proper name for her is the Cadillac Goddess. Can't give you a specific year but "Manual tilt" day/night mirrors first began appearing in the mid 1930s. WYR - Packard 2nd? TR-5 and a TR-6 (had a 5 and a 6, still miss the 6) Ps. What's all the stuff/rant at the end the episode every day now? That 41 is a nice one, noticed it had a lot of small orange peel.
Great looking car. I wish that you had shown the concealed fuel filler. The seats may have been reupholstered not exactly to factory specs. They looked slightly over stuffed to me. The fuel pump looks a bit odd. That glass bowl is to catch sediment and should be pointed down!
Hi Jay!: Really enjoyed the Caddy Video! Those were really nice looking cars and really paved the way for the success Cadillac would enjoy during the late 1940's thru the 1960's really! Harley really knew how to style his cars. Would for sure have to pick the Packard in the WYR number one. The 1941 Packard was probably their best looking design of the 1940's. I consider it the last GREAT Packard. Not that the 1942-1947 models weren't nice cars, they were, but Packard never really got back in the styling groove, so to speak after 1941. Except for maybe the 1956, which was a nice Luxury car and looked the part. Second one I would probably go for the TR-3, just for the "cute" factor. I'm sure the later ones performed better than the TR-3, but they aren't as "cute:!

@ericruud9328 Buick had the only decent heater for extreme cold weather for years, many people from those environs purchased the South-wind, an excellent choice.

Hi Jay. For your information, the 'double' fuel pump also incorporates a vacuum pump for better wiper action. Now, did you establish what the amber lenses at the front do? Foglights or turn signals, or nothing at all?
LOL, those Triumphs only got worse and worse.. Our family had the TR3, rough ride, noisey and really not as fun as it seemed. Also, people's expectations and bodies were different in the 40s and 50s. Packards and Caddys and such were definitely upmarket and many no doubt had chauffeurs.
I must have missed the graphic showing 0-60 & mpg. I used to say if I ever got married I'd want one of these instead of a modern Limo. Way more class. Have you noticed... Some have running boards and some don't? I wonder which model have the running boards?

Yo Jay, the Caddie in the first brochure, the first coupe model, sure looks swoopy. Swoopiest car of 1941 I bet? Part of the original GMH logo incorporated the Cadillac's flat hood ornament, just below the leaping women ornament. There is a lot to like here, though the coupe is my stand-out favourite. I really hope you're not coming down with a cold? You failed to scream out the current conversion price. It never gets old for me, and was an outstanding feature you brought to the car genre. It made me subscribe, in fact. No clue about when the first day/night rearview mirror was introduced, though the Caddie brochure does seem to convey their first application of it? Even in the 60s and 70s, it was uncommon for this to be universal. I well recall the nightmare of having a truck with a drugged up driver, pulling in within a metre of your car with full high beam and driving lights on. The light is inescapable, with an incredible intensity when so many are switched on at once. It feels like your retinas are being burnt, and you lose night vision to a dangerous level. I almost imagined it was causing the paint on the rear to bubble. The later vehicles all had this safety device fitted, with the Ford unit sliding over a metal fitting which was superglued in position on the windscreen. With enough heat cycles in summer, the whole assembly would fall off once the glue dried out. (adhesion only occurs because the chemicals retain some moisture) You know, Jay, you rekindle so many memories with your show. But honestly, Jay, how could this be the standard of the world? Full fake wood trim? It looks bad, without any attempt to hide it either. Things like the RR held their position because of the attention to detail. Connelly leather, lambs wool over carpet, and fully matched walnut trim. It about doubles the price of the car. The poor can't hope to afford it and the rich don't care about the cost, or maintenance. The European thing, has never been about showing off, they rely on quality. In America, I think the opposite position may apply (from the time I lived there anyway) A different set of values apply to the 'M' cars from BMW & the AMG cars from Mercedes. This proceeds all the way down to the one-off builds and short production models. The E-Type Jaguar was a production car that had all the best engineering thrown at it, then lined with wood and leather. A totally different mind set is involved there. Bentley's? They are slightly down market RR's with go-fast components and a lighter weight. True GT cars. Porsche's? A down payment on a fancy house, with astonishing power, handling and acceleration, yet it doesn't have an useable rear seat. Such different motoring worlds. One day, when you and your family get the chance to travel, well Australia is a mix, where GMH & Ford had to build us European handling cars, and then Europe, a small place relatively, yet with a larger economy than the USA, and so many competing car manufacturers for every imaginable genre.

That is a great answer there’s a lot of times where people buy Packards and they can’t get the parts they need to finish the cars which is really sad especially finding engines and such
An amazing vehicle for looks. Interior is so refined and plush, but, as you note, the seating is horribly uncomfortable! Just awful. I’d prefer to ride in a Packard. This is one of those models where you have a tough decision of what to buy back in the day.
I 100% agree I don’t understand why they messed around with seats I mean Cadillac had some decent seats in the early 30s why they just didn’t use the same seat profile they used back then I don’t know how to describe it the seats were weird did not feel natural or normal
Yup. When I was a kid (1961) we vacationed in North Wildwood NJ. The owner of the property had this exact model in black. He lived full time at the shore and was 80 back then. He bought the car new. In the 60s it was already 20+ years old, but had almost no miles on it. What is interesting is that the shore was notorious for causing cars to rust out in 2 years. This beast had zero rust (yeah, he garaged it, etc). Wish I could have bought it when he passed……..
@@What.its.like. one suggestion I’d have is to include a Federal Regulation guesstimate on the price. Because that car as made did not have all the added regulations that stopped VW from selling Beetles in the Us. So the price given in today’s money is a false high. Makes people believe they could drive a car for that money. So you need to state 3 prices. Original, todays money and another price to make it legal. Only a guess backed on average
This car seems... Disappointing. Harley "make em hurl" Earl really did a number on this... Keeping in General motors proud tradition of shoveling big ugly cars that nobody really wants down everyone's throat...they made a high option LaSalle, and priced it like a midrange Cadillac. Bunko game...so I'm going to opt out of scenario one. The Packard is a grandpa car. The Cadillac salesman thinks I'm a sucker. And What the hell is a Lincoln? Some irrelevant brand Ford pulled out of Thier ass because nothing was ever fancy enough for Edsel Ford... Scenario 2 I'll take that delicious cheese flavored door stop... Or perhaps that door stop flavored wedge of fine English Cheddar.
Hey Jay, you have just given me an Idea. I am a retired electrician, and I think I could do a bit of wiring with a fused circuit, install a double pole single throw switch and turn on my back up lights on my truck to give a tailgater which I hate, a little pause on tailgating me. I am a little curious. I noticed this car sported a radio but I did not see an antenna on the cars exterior. Aside of that, this car just exudes majesty and is drop dead gorgeous! Thanks!
I always wanted a screen to tell people how I truly feel lol 😂 I know a lot of people don’t like Teslas I want to review one on here one day I would love to do a comparison with the model three and the Prius.. The Tesla model three has a function where you can make the horn say anything that you wanted to say downloaded sounds or whatever you could either record whatever you wanted to record. If I owned one of those cars my horn would be me yelling HEY ASSHOLE lol I’ll have to see if I can find the radio antenna sometimes they put them up on top of the roof
