I found this world war two US ammo box online for a steal. It was the perfect project for this WW2 special.
Firstly, I removed the old disintegrating gasket. I then remove the lid in preparation for blasting. Blasting blind in my home-made cabinet is a really hard and slow process. Because of this, I didn't manage to get all of the rust and paint off. So once I got tired of the blaster, I cleaned up the rest with a sanding pad, paint stripper, and rust remover. This was great for the inside as it was able to get into the tiniest of places. Once the rust remover has done its job, I rubbed it off and quickly etch primed everything to ensure the rust would not come back.
I then used filler to fill in the two dents on the front of the box. I also had to remake the letter 'L' as it was right in the middle of a dent. I wasn't 100% happy with the result, but it looks a lot better than before. Once that had dried, I mixed up some high build primer and began laying down three coats. Once dry, I used 400g wet or dry to smooth out the box and lid. Then, I sprayed it all US army matte green. This really started to make the box feel original again. I then carefully applied the stencil, which would have been stamped on back in the day, and then sprayed over in yellow and hoped for the best. After much faffing getting the middles of the letters out, It turned out pretty much perfect. Note that I had to use a super tacky version of the stencil as the surface was not as smooth as a vehicle body for example.
I then turned my attention to the lid and remaking that old gasket. I pondered on many different techniques and materials for the new gasket (as they are not available for purchase) and decided on black silicone caulk. I smoothed it out with my finger, let it dry for 24 hours and then pressed it onto the box to create an indentation all the way around and thus forming a waterproof seal. It was then a matter of reassembling the box and adding the final touches.
I sourced some replica WW2 .30 Cal M1 Carbine ammo boxes from the US and 50 inert bullets from the UK. Once these were added the restoration was complete. And a great one it was too.

I really like the work you put into repairing this small piece of history, the trick of replacing the rubber gasket worked much better than I would have expected. The only problem I can see is with the ammunition shown which is 30 caliber carbine (used in M1 Carbine rifles) not the linked 30 caliber 4 AP to 1 Tracer listed on the side (30.06 caliber)

Get yourself an Xacto knife, would have been perfect to remove the small stencil pieces between letters, and is useful for many operations

And perhaps some tweezers for electronics, those are sharp and precise. Don't get the ESD safe ones though, it's unnecessary for your application.

To smooth out the gasket with less spread out to clean up, use an empty toilet paper core. The round shape provides a nice smooth surface and most of the excess collects in the center of the cardboard tube leaving much less to wipe up. This works on almost any caulk/silicone jobs
@daddymarkram
@daddymarkram 6 лет назад
Nicely done. If you want a better looking result with silicone you can use a small wooden spatula dipped in soapy water. Silicone doesn't stick to wet things, so it's easier to work with then. The soap in the water makes the spatula slide over the silicone easily and helps getting a pretty result. I know it doesn't matter for a gasket you won't hardly ever see and I think you did very well. Cheers. :-)

Guys, I get it. I was military as well. However, I never saw one with paint like that either. If you are making the perfect version I thought he might like it straight. Restored to look original with it crooked makes sense though

I have so many of these ammo type cans. Lots of them filled as well. And some of them could use a going over as well. But when I see the meager cost of buying really nice used ones, I have a hard time justifying the efforts needed to make them look great, like you did. But one day I will because...well...I can... Thumbs Up!

The container is an M1 Ammunition Box for belted .30 Caliber (.30/'06 Springfield) ammo. It was used to hold 250-round woven cloth belts of Machinegun ammo. It was replaced by the improved M1A1 Ammo Box later in the war. This was replaced by the M19 ammo box (.30 Caliber [.30-'06 Springfield]), which was replaced by the redesigned M19A1 ammo Box (7.62mm NATO) in the mid-1950s.

Just to remind anyone thinking of doing this to their ammo can- the paint can be obtained online from Midwest Military- semi-gloss olive drab # TM9-03. Do a search on "research on paint colors done by paul vien" for the details on WWII ammo box paint. The color on the finished can in the video is too light and not semi-gloss, and not the proper color for these WWII boxes. The restoration work in the video is impressive, but the paint is incorrect. If any of you are going to tackle restoring these things, please get the paint right.

Nice restore. To me the lettering would be the toughest part. Too bad you were slightly off keeping it straight and centered but I’m betting when they made it originally, they just quickly slapped a stencil on there and blasted it with yellow paint. Keep up the good work.

Hi! Great job, but this box is supposed to contain a 250-round belt of .30-06 Spr Armor Piercing M1 ammo, not a boxed .30 Carbine M1 ammo. The same is said in the decals you applied on the box. Sorry for my English =)

that is what the applied stencils says, but the embossing say it was a transit case for .30 carbine ammo, and there were no belted .30 carbine weapons in US army service, maybe the same can could have been used to carry belted .30-06, but that would have been done in the field or at an army depot, the latter could maybe explain the stencil if depots did such things a repurposing empty ammo cans

This is an exceptionally well done restoration. The only thing that looks off to me other then the silicone is the paint job. All the US WW2 ammo boxes I've ever seen are painted an almost glossy Olive Drab finish, while yours is painted more of a matte Khaki Drab. Overall I love your work though, especially what you've done on the BMW. Cant wait to see more!
