Cherry (Redman) by Harry James & his Orchestra
Recorded in July 1942 but didn’t rise to national popularity until early 1944 while the musicians union remained on strike against Columbia Records (aka the “Recording Ban”).
THE 1944 HITS ARCHIVE - a collection of commercial recordings and songs that proved popular during the calendar year 1944 via sales, sheet music, juke box play, and radio exposure.…plus some others that have gained increased recognition or have been shown to have had an impact during the decades that followed. You’ll note that due to the long-running ‘recording ban’ (musician’s union strike against the record companies), quite a number of this year’s best-sellers were recordings made back in 1942 or earlier.

The back side was "Jump Town", which did exactly that.

There are many excellent treatments of the great number, including the original from McKinney's Cotton Pickers, for which reedman Don Redman served as musical director, but my favourite of all is this one. This arrangement is spectacular, and Harry, who clearly loved the song, plays with swagger, virtuosity and heart. Normally, I'm not a fan of strings in swing bands, but here, as on many James band sides, they are a real addition. Harry had the best string section of the Big Band Era!

Oh nice, they finally let this one get uploaded again! For a while this was part of the list of songs unable to be used in any YT video. Guess they finally got a way around it.

Rather than continue to try uploading blocked titles, I just go ahead and 'publish' them all initially so they'll be immediately accessible if/when the block gets lifted. This one went up with the re-posting project last May and started getting views this past December 22nd.

@@the78prof72 that figures. Until Today, the last time I attempted listening to the entire Hits Archive for 1944 was back in November. By "Song Title" I made it down to Humoresque - Guy Lombardo for today.
