70 mph record!?! Wow, the revolution was around the corner. In the early 50's, the Slo-Mo hydroplane was a vast improvement and started a new generation of boats, where 100mph average was the minimum to qualify, and they were nearing 200mph on longer straightaways.

My older brother and I for fun watched YT videos of Guy Lombardo's old New Years shindigs from the 70's on 2023 New Year's Eve. Everything was better then, boats, tv shows and people.
In 1970 I was stationed at Naval Hospital Key West, Florida. I worked part time for a local ambulance service. We had the contract to cover the boat races every Sunday. Marvelous time !
The war was won, party time. This is an area I sail in often. Those days are long gone though. There are a few boats, lots of "SWATed up" Police and customs boats.
