I've got a set of pistons for a 1957 Traxcavator D315 Cat 955C, that's been setting in ATF for three years 😁 one more year ott to do it. 🤣😂🤣 put them back on the stove when I'm ready. got lots of projects myself.

There is no mind numbing decent into madness that compares to unfreezing a Ford flathead. These days I just bust the pistons out with an air chisel and save the bits for the forge. Here in the lower 48 that's an option. I reckon you got "supply issues" up there. For what it's worth, I used to abuse an old 36 Allis Chalmers tractor. She only had to run one month every year. I once replaced a head gasket with a pair of vice grips to put it in the machine shed for winter. She started with the second pull of the hand crank. Flatheads forever 👍

There are vendors out there that specialize in the flathead engines. I have a neighbor who built a Ford pickup a short time ago and he found everything he needed. Good luck on yours...

1. Get yourself a decent sledge hammer, The small one you have could make more harm than good. 2. Bore out this cylinder is the only reasonable option as the damage is too severe to the cylinder liner. Good luck witht the flat head! I lovr the bubbling sound of it!

The Cold War Motors boys used a skim of JB weld on an inline 6 cylinder wall that was pitted, then light sanded and used scotch-bright on the walls to fill in the pitting. In the absence of using a machine shop and/or sleeving the cylinder, just another option to consider. That cylinder is severely pitted and it WILL chooch a lot if left alone. Otherwise, HUGE kudos on getting that piston loose through sheer patience and perseverance. Looking forward to the next installment! Cheers!!!

I’ve been thinking of building a block heater that would use an small on demand electric hot water heater to circulate hot coolant through a stuck engine to heat cycle it while soaking it with Marvel mystery oil. They sell the heaters to make hot tea water, ect for fairly inexpensive

Have fun removing the rings, I’ve spent hours doing that. I think I have 2 of those engines out back that I’ll never get to. Too bad your so far away, I’d probably give them to you.

Hey, it' came out completely intact! Nicely done! I'll keep the burning diesel trick in mind, that looks like it would heat-soak the block better than with just using a propane torch. Goes to show that patience was quite essential here, and it paid off. As for the pitting, and for not realistically having a machine shop/parts to rebore it, I've heard of people using JB Weld to fill in the pits. Specifically the high temp rated stuff, but it apparently works from what I've heard. Scott at coldwarmotors did a video with his '37 Cheyv coupe where he attempted it, but later decided to just have the block properly sleeved. Although the cylinder he was dealing with had much deeper pitting than your flathead does. Just a thought.

heard the rumors of vinegar and I tried it out on old rusted tools and it took the rust off no problem but I kept on trying it for a week to see what else it does and it actually started to eat the metal so you can overdo it with vinegar I've never tried it on a seized motor, the next time I'm going to!

Get a hold of " Iron Trap Garage " they will have just about anything you will need in used Flat Head Parts.

You can have just the one cylinder bored and sleeved to original size .I am sure rings are available for the old girl do a valve grind to if you send it to a machine shop . I think would be money well spent

Another fascinating "adventure"! Always great to see what you can do with limited parts resources and lots of ingenuity. I see you are using Kroil, which is probably the best penetrant made. If you need parts for that engine, don't overlook Iron trap garage. Great resource for parts and knowledge. You might could have applied the initial heating to the block instead of the piston, as aluminum expands faster than iron.

good work. keep it affordable for yourself. The head gasket prices are a bit steep.

Those valve seats are gonna be a challenge, but it's not your first rodeo and I expect you'll get it together and running pretty good

I've always wondered why this big Flathead never generated much I terest from the hot-rod fraternity, nor from the high-po after-market industry.

I think Flathead 6 pistons/rings might work….

Can't buy parts for a flathead Ford??? Given these engines history, there are lots of rebuild parts available. Not necessarily cheap but most definitely available.

That looks like a big win on this project. It is always a good feeling when things actually work out. I've been on the losing side of things like that too often over the years. I look forward to seeing this old flathead running again, an maybe powering some old Ford derelict you bring back to life.

I'm with you, there comes a point where you just have to press on and not care if you happen to loose (in the case) a bit of compression. You way the effort and cost and it's just not worth it for an old beat down vehicle that you're not looking for a whole lot out of in the first place.
