While doing the 3000 mile service I decided to address the leaky transmission/torque tube ball housing. I apply RTV to the ball housing collar to transmission surfaces in hope it stops the annoying drip.
Before I put the T-5 trans in my '53, I did the same thing you did here, new gaskets an such, but mine leaked at the nut on the back no matter how tight I could get it. I improvised with some old bootlace leather split down the middle to make it smaller, kinda like old pump packing, wrapped it several times, put the nut on, no more leaks. The things we do for these old trucks.
Thanks for the school That must be a common task on these trucks, I’ve done the same. After several 1000 miles my cork gasket on the ball socket started seeping from wear , Not wanting to pull the trunyon apart I wrapped the cork with Teflon tape , it is holding better than the new cork did originally. An old mechanic taught me that trick with O-rings that wouldn’t hold . It is a little time consuming wrapping, I’m going to try that trick on the torque tube nut packing when the nut won’t tighten down any more also
THose old mechanics tips and tricks can't be beat. I learned more from some old dealership mechanics than I did the combined schools & lessons I took. I'll have to keep the teflon trick in mind.
Are you sure you put enough oil in the housing? I first heard you say a pint to a pint and a half which would be 16-24 ounces but then heard you say you only put 6 ounces in, or less than half a pint.
Love your videos. I have a '52 3100 that belonged to my grandfather. Question-do you top off the ball/trunnion housing until it begins to drip out of the fill hole like you would the transmission or differential?
Thanks Ty. I only add 6 ozs of 80/90 to the ball housing. I found that info somewhere and wrote it down but I don't remember where I got it. Unfortunately it's not in the manual. The manual does say that lube from the tranny does overflow into the ball housing over time. I figure by adding more than that the lube will overflow down the torque tube towards the rearend instead of staying in the ball housing..
