Beautiful guitar, but I also have to say thanks for providing an excellent review of it. Nice playing through the perfect kind of amp to be playing this guitar through.
1949 wasn't the first year for this model--mine was built sometime between Dec. 1, 1947 and January 8, 1948. It's unclear as to when they actually started manufacturing them, but I can find labels/serial numbers that go back to April 28, 1947. Regardless, these are awesome guitars, and the old ones have a sweetness that is unmatched.
charlie byrd - corcovado wes montgomery in holland >blown away, (especially when i noticed wes was only playing with a thumb) >still not my favorite music, BUT i am now very impressed with jazz.
it's different.. new guitars sometimes have a brighter sound, a bit more fresh. the biggest difference is in the pickups: in the past they were handmade, so every single guitar sounded different. there were extremely bad guitars as much as incredible guitars, but in most cases time made them better. basically they have more character than new guitars and of course the sound becomes richer and more open
love those players. If you arent so impressed with jazz ease your way in via players like Marcus Miller, Christian Scott, Esperanza Spaulding. I find that guitar-laden/heavy jazz is never something I liked. Unless its the classic guys. Also try Grant Green.
