On "My Car Story" we're at a FuelFed Coffee & Classics Car Show in Winnetka IL on 9-25-16.
We're looking at a 1950 Morris Minor Tourer Convertible in Romaine Green Paint with a 27.5 HP 918cc engine.
The car's Owner is Tim Olson. Tim shares the car sat for 12 years and he had to restore the mechanicals. Well he’s done great work because this car looks like it just came off the show room floor.
ENJOY!

Ah, the good old days of when Britain made their own cars. I remember these as a kid in the 60's as my dad had one. His was the station wagon or what the British call an "estate car". Our family did many road trips. I can also remember helping my dad to work on it, happy days brings back memories.

I had a Morris Minor 1000 coupe when I was in the Air Force in 64-65. I sold it for $300. before I left for Vietnam. I have a lot of good memories of that car. The Morris in your video is exceptional. I didn't realize that the early ones had a flathead engine.

I still have this cute tourer which I rebuilt it from scrap in the early eighties. It is very tidious and time taken project since the parts were hard to find and very expensive to import from UK. I used to drive it for several years before finally it laid in the garage due to some technical problems. You seldom see one on the roads nowdays in Malaysia where I live.

This is beautiful, my elder brother and myself in SK, Canada are restoring a Morris MM coupe from the same year, which also has romaine green color, SMM/ 51687 - about 7000 cars older than this very beautiful convertible of Mr. Tim Olson. That coupe is a Barn find from Prairies but unfortunate part is that it lived outside the barn :| & apparently no signs of usage from last 35-40 years, someone did removed one of the fender and some bits for the purpose of bodywork (may be 15 years ago) but left it inside the car. When we hooked up the battery, the only sign of life was a light bulb inside the cabin. We rescued it last month and received the parts from ESM (UK) today to get the work started :)

Lou Costabile :Thanks Lou, your video and interview were very thought provoking, and of course the close-ups of the dashboard, instruments, and other typical Morris design features ring bells for all people who ever owned one. Mine was an Australian assembled 4 door, which I bought 2nd hand in the mid 60's when I was about 21, which I upgraded by fitting a "short motor" myself. I hadn't done much DIY on cars, and to be honest, I was amazed that it worked 😃. Sadly, I unwisly sold it after a few years, as people do, and had a string of other 2nd hand cars. My present Honda Brio is a similar sized car and is very pleasant to drive today. But . . . one can't help having a hankering for the good old days, driving a Moggie and feeling such freedom.

Fascinating Morris, I gather it must be the first side-valve model to have the new front wings with the raised headlight position? Earlier versions had the headlights on the same level as the grill, called, Low-lights if I'm not mistaken? Regards from Australia.

I noticed the original Lucas battery, or is it a modern copy? It reminds me, as a 10 year old in the early sixties, my dad's Minor would not start on frosty winter mornings. My job was to hand start the cold engine before going to school, dad had a dicky heart. Greetings from Ireland!

Nice to see an early Minor Stateside. This one is surely in better-than-new condition. What is described as a "suspension spring" in the video is in fact a lever arm shock absorber. All Minors were equipped with torsion bar front suspension and multi leaf rear. Trafficators have largely been replaced or supplemented by standard indicator lights by owners of cars originally equipped with them. Nice to see them actually work on this example. The solenoids often failed leaving the driver having to resort to hand signals...

I remember when there were many of these on the roads here in the UK. Interesting to see one in the USA. Those "Trafficators" were used on other British cars in the 40s and the 50s. I remember them in use as a child in the 60s and 70s but by then they looked really old fashioned. In Alec Issigonis's original design the headlights were on either side of the radiator but unfortunately regulations meant they had to be higher, so they put them on the front mudguards (fenders in US). This was a pity because the original design looked better and more 50s.

I drove a Morris Minor 1000 pickup (utility) for work several times, and in top gear at 45 mph you were feeling for another higher gear as the engine was racing. But the utilities may have been lower geared than the other models.

These cars have independent torsion bar front suspension, I think that was the lever-arm damper at the end, not the spring.

I owned several Morris Minor cars and covered thousands of miles in them. They are great to drive but the original cross ply tyres made driving in the wet quite interesting. (radial tyres transformed these cars) I was given a woody estate car (Romaine Green funnily enough) which cost me £60.00 to repair. I ran it for a year or so and sold it for £300. 500% profit wasn't bad in those days.

Just found this video on You Tube. I am an avid Minor fan in the UK and own a 1949 Lowlight Saloon (not exported to the USA as the headlights were mounted in the grille not on the front wings) and 1952 Convertible. A great video and fantastic car but I don't believe you are correct in stating the engines were used to power water pumps in the 'Blitz'. I believe that engine was the Aluminium 1100cc Coventry Climax engine.

The car was not widened 4 " . The actual width is the gap between the cut bumpers as now fitted. Just measure behind the blanking plate at the actual bumper valence and chrome . It was cut and the new width can be found. It is 2 1/2 " . If it were 4" the gap would be 4". It is not. the bonnet 4" is just a design feature .

To the owner you need to learn more about your Morris Minor Series MM whilst you are correct about the 4” widening ,the morris minor was the first car to have rack and pinnion steering box invented by Morris ,as was the uni body construction along with the S.U carburettor and Electric SU Fuel Pump the thing you pointed out as the suspension was in fact the front shock absorber ,the suspension is in fact another Morris invention the torsion bar systen that runs lenght wise from the front wishbone along the chassis frame i never ever heard that it was supposed to be front wheel drive i think you got miss informed there however it was meant to have a flat four engine , but there was a over production of the flathead four cylinder motor during the second world war ,and it was never termed as a drop top as some British cars where the The Morris Minor convertible was called the Tourer hope i have enlightened you , nice car and sounds like a British car lots of new parts still available im not sure about now but up until the demise of the rover group the company, old machinery , Presses where given over to club members i belive for a day to,press out various parts like body pannels

Citroen used torsion bar ifs, monocoque body & rack & pinion steering in their Avant from 1934, that's where Issigonis got his ideas
