yeah, i finished this mower the other day but i can't quite seem to get it to cut right. oh well. i could prolly sell it for twice what i payed now that it looks fancy haha.
Awesome, I just got an old wood handled, (and the wheel part that goes on the grass in front of the blades is wood too) it's in great shape considering. Was checking restoration videos and I'm so glad I found yours, as much as i love to watch people whip out the CNC, or metal lathe, (and drool) I'm lowtech so thanks! Plus experimenting is how it's done!
there is no wrong way to do anything, just many ways that yield different results. and the way i paint my stuff works great for me so i dont have much reason to change it.
@@RinoaL I'm about 5 years too late on this comment. There are wrong ways to do things. In my industry, we use power tools; you can quickly lose fingers or limbs when using them incorrectly. With regards to painting, one method just uses less paint, so it's not really that important. The best way to learn is to experiment, and I enjoyed the video, nice work.
I grew up using a reel mower (gas powered) but haven't seen one for many yrs. Not sure if they are still made but there was a cool hand blade sharpener that you placed on a blade and drew back and forth (with the mower laying so the wheels weren't touching the ground) trust me you really, really want sharp blades on one of those :)
Good video! Do you know who made it for Montgomery Ward? American Standard Mower Company of Shelbyville, Indiana, an over 100 year old company, made lots of reel mowers. I wonder if this is one of them. Salt is an amazing chemical, it can corrode steel, it can clean rusted steel, and it be used to prepare the surface of steel to hold paint. Too bad that you didn't have a sand blaster, would have made the job a breeze. Thank you for sharing!
I really like your videos! But.. I have some suggestions. First get a set of open ended spanners and ring spanners.( just a cheap set) they will make your life easier!! Also penetrating oil. One can will last you years and makes removing tough nuts and bolts Easy! And finally a wire attachment for your angle grinder to get into the tough areas. you do enough mechanical work to justify the investment. Keep up the good work.
already have a socket and open end wrench set, just wasnt worth it to get it out when my adjustable worked good enough. and yeah i'm planning on getting an angle grinder. tbh i find if something is stuck i just use a blowtorch to heat it up instead of wd-40.
man I love electrolyses cakes, the cake you got off the handle was sweet, ive been wanting to see a big bath used in the electrolysing for a while, it did you well there. I love the idea of sand cleaning, can you jam something like a tread mill motor on to that big barrel and get a cement mixer type thing going with sand in it to clean your gear? you can see how them mowers last over the years, being well designed and well built :-) not fancy digging a pit and then tarpaulin it up in case of large chassis and stuff to electrolyse? good vid man, had top staying power :-D well played :-p
How about building a "soda blaster." It's a sand blaster that uses baking soda as it's abrasive. They are very nice since they don't require cleaning up afterwards.
You reel mower project gave me an idea that we should build a reel mower to go on the railroad tracks to cut some of the areas between the tracks and outside of them by using a switcher to push it. I'm not sure that I can get it done, I don't weld and will have to rely on others. I wish you were down here, we would have some fun. Some of the volunteers are attempting to cut stuff with little lawn tractors in the hot weather.
Rinoa Super-Genius Just saying, I have used it an chrome that was very pitted. I did not think it would work and was surprised at how effective it was. Steel wool wont fix holes in metal either and will definitely scratch the chrome coat more than aluminum foil and cola (its more of a chemical reaction than a physical one). Not any soda will work, it has to have phosphoric acid not citric acid as the magic ingredient. Try coke or Pepsi, diet is better because its not as sticky. Next time you get a bit of rusty chrome, make a video comparing the steel wool and cola differences. It will be worth 10 minutes.
You could build a frame work using skateboard wheels for the stabilizing rollers, and a rubber wheel/tire, maybe 2 for even support, that the barrel will rest on, this provides the pressure friction so it would rotate the barrel. Use an electric motor or a hand crank with a reduction gear
actually i think i could just weld the barrel to a 26" bicycle rim. that would be an axle already. then the other side i would add the two lawnmower wheels and maybe make one powered.
the blade adjustment is 2 screws (I'm assuming) and that raises or lowers the hight of cut, so before you weld that blade and grind it, try the screws if they are there to see if that makes a difference.
it has 4 screws for that, and no it wouldnt fix that problem. i would either have to grind down 4 blades to match the one or raise the one to match the 4 other blades.
I can read your video descriptions just fine. I was referring to your other projects. I.E. your Honda 3 wheeler. Wire cutters and a pipe wrench? I like your videos just don't understand your use of tools sometimes. Sorry to sound disrespectful.
Has anyone said anything to you about the possibility of pollution? It is possible with the tree huggers around - not that it's my problem but it could be
not yet, only people concerned about the salt killing the grass. but this part of the yard is a bunch of rock slag and glass so nothing grows there anyway,
wtf are you talking about? i finished this project today. maybe you dont realise when something is labeled "part 1" that means there will be more to come. if you want me to use "proper tools" then give me a bunch of money to buy all those "proper tools" you want me to use. if you dont plan on paying for the tools then stfu. i dont have any issues with my tools so no reason to pay to replace things that work. simple as that ^^
