The restoration of our historic Nickel Plate Road diesel locomotive has entered a dramatic new phase! No. 358 has been transformed back to its as-built appearance by Progress Rail in Muncie, Indiana. We couldn't be more grateful to our friends at Progress and the hundreds of donors and supporters that have helped us reach this milestone. There's still some work to do to get the 358 ready for the road, but we can't wait to introduce you to this beautiful Electro-Motive time machine very soon.
Donated by Norfolk Southern to the Fort Wayne Railroad in 2010, this SD9-type locomotive has undergone an extensive restoration. It will soon become an operating rail attraction, complementing the nonprofit's preservation efforts and expanding tourism events in the Northeast Indiana region where it will join Nickel Plate Road steam locomotive no. 765. Donations to help complete the restoration can be made at fortwaynerailroad.org/donate. #locomotive #preservation #railroad

Back in black and Venetian yellow, #NKP358 looks sharp! All it needs is some more mechanical and electrical work and she's good to go! Kudos to #ProgressRail for the paintjob, you gave her the look she thoroughly deserves! PS: when her restoration is all done, will 358 pair up with #NS8100 for a photo op?

My father, son in law of Raymond S Harms worked for my grandfather for more than 45 yrs. Oh how. Family loved free or 1/2 prices back & forth to Ft Wayne where my Grandma Retta & Ray were from. Oh How Dad loved the RR & got such a kick over it being named “The NickelPlate which of course referred to what a nickel wld look like after being run over by an Engine. So that’s how it got it’s name, the NickelPlate.

As a person who started my railroad career on early GP’s and SD’s and several further generations of locomotives and knowing full well the ins and outs of most of them, under real world applications, I’m amazed at how grown men become googled eyed at so much scrap iron. You’d think it was the space shuttle! If any of these folks had to spend upwards of thirty years sweating their ass’s off in one of these hot and filthy throbbing engines, being banged and knocked around flat switching heavy cuts or sitting behind a red block on a 95f day while the dispatcher picked his nose and scratched his behind, you’d have a different opinion of the whole shebang. Only thing I can say about these early generation locomotives is the 567’s had a whine all their own and clack-clack of contacts at transition is something you’ll never forget….along with the cold drafts in winter, noisy heaters that rarely worked well and dynamics’s that hadn’t worked in thirty years and weren’t much when they did. Prop the doors open with a flag stick in summer and tape the windows and doors up in winter. Put all the makeup you want on her but she’s still just a worn out old hag underneath. I ran’em all from a handful of F units to cw4400’s when I retired. Now those engines are being scrapped. Good riddance.
@fortwaynerailroad
@fortwaynerailroad Год назад
Howdy, Mark, welcome to the page where this collective of veteran railroaders and non-railroaders have spent 51 years sweating in our bibs operating a 1940s-era steam locomotive and running it in the majority of states east of the Mississippi for half a dozen Class Is in all manner of territory. You’d have a different opinion of the whole shebang if you'd ever picked up an alemite gun on a 109 degrees summer day, shoveled 200 miles with a broken stoker, danced with a busted a waterglass, drove 400 rivets with an air gun, or had to shovel cinders and ashes after a 16 hour day. If anything, being in an enclosed cab for once is a vacation! Enjoy retirement.

Central Texas used to have a few good railroad lines.. Cotton Belt, St Louis Southwestern, Central Texas Railway, Peanut Line, Stephenville Texas North and South.. Massive Respect for your love and passion of keeping Fort Wayne railroads rolling! When it’s gone, it’s gone forever! Treasure and the railroads alive! I wanted to see USS Texas, fire up her boilers and engage her propellors turn her rudder to cruise around the Gulf of Mexico, but everyone is broke and can’t afford it! 😵😵🫨🫨😭😭🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
