I like the 51' better, because of the cool chrome arrow and blue horn button 🔘 with stars, but it sure would look good with some hubcaps! 😊

Thinking back on my dad driving the '50 Olds ... One day in about 1963 or 1964, he came home (after a small accident), and the right rear door was caved in. My little self said "Daddy, somebody let the air out of your car!"

The singing commercial was a HOOT! The hood ornament and badge are fantastic. I love 98 Oldsmobiles.

I think the GM designs of that era, are some of the most beautiful ever! It is extremely tough to pick one in both scenarios, they're all superb designs IMO, that particular Buick convertible would be really tough to pass up!! 😎

Great presentation on a much over looked Oldsmobile in an era when they were really admired. For WYR: I slightly favor the '51 Buick convertible over both the Oldsmobile and Pontiac convertibles, and then hands down the '51 Hudson Hornet sedan for the second choice. One of the greatest automobiles to ever roll off a Detroit assembly line. Makes your mouth water just by looking at it! 😊

One old car collector called them bathtubs, but they're alright. That heavy thick smooth chrome look was in, and cars were styled to look like they were leaping up, rather than the nose down look that came later. Stick some fins on those baby's, then they look like rockets! 🚀😊

My mom (God rest her soul) said her favorite car she ever owned was a 1950 Oldsmobile. I was just a kid, so I didn't know if what engine it had. Other than I remember that when the engine was hot, it was hard to start. If I remember correctly (and um, it's a _long_ time ago!), the car was 6-volt, and my dad was able to buy an 8-volt battery ... which made it much easier to start--at the expense of shorter life of headlights and other bulbs. Both mom and dad have passed, but it's times like these when I'd like to ask them more questions!

Thanks for another awesome video Jay the early 50’s cars were very well engineered in my opinion, many cars didn’t have power breaks, windows, steering etc but the mechanical systems they had were very well engineered and executed, they just seemed to work very smoothly and had a mechanical feel that was lost in the rush to power everything . For the would you rather segment I’m going to choose the Buick in the first instance because they are very handsome and just a little nicer than the Oldsmobiles and in the second choice it’s going to be the the Hudson for the same reason it’s just a little better compared to the olds or the studebaker. I think this is the first time I’ve chose a model not highlighted in both options

Another great episode, Jay. BTW, I loved the commercials that you included! Most people just don't realize what a big deal the "Rocket" engine was for Oldsmobile for many years. They were certainly known for their "get up and go", which sold a lot of them over the years.

These 98s are essentially Cadillac bodies with minor alterations to the fore and aft fenders/ taillights. 98s were sometimes referred to as the "thinking man's Cadillac". It's almost as if they stepped into the role that was occupied by the vanished La Salle.

Heaters were actually good enough, but they were optional on many cars until the late 60s. True, precious few cars were sold without a heater, even in the late 40s, but a true miser could get a car without one.

WYR 1: Gotta go with the Olds for the motor. Styling of the Buick is awesome, and the Pontiac is a nice trim-looking package. WYR 2: The Studebaker lets me imagine I'm Fozz E. Bear and the Hudson looks Fabulous ("Cars" reference), but I like all three! GM put a heater below the passenger seat in a lot of cars of the era; I think this Olds has it in the engine compartment.

GM had three main body shells in that era. The Smaller A Body was Chevrolet and Pontiac Jr models, the B body was Senior Pontiac, Olds Jr and Buick Special, they big C body was reserved for the Olds 98, Buick Roadmaster and Cadillac except Fleetwoods.

That new '51 Stude' Commander V8 was a fast one also, in the drag races we did back then, the rocket and the V8 Stude' were neck 'n neck, it was a toss-up.

What a stunning automobile. So much to like. I'll pick the Buick in the first scenario and the Olds in the second.

I had a 63super 88.... what a rocket!

A common feature on 4 doors of the 1950s was rear vent windows, but less commonly seen on 2 doors. I noticed this 98 was not made available with rear vent windows. When it comes to choosing favourites I would say a 2 way tie between Buick and Olds, but my favourite is Studebaker.

My kind of car. My older cousin had a 53 Super 88 hardtop green, his brother had a close to matching green 53 Buick Super green hardtop, loved those 2 cars, Mom's side of the family preferred the high end cars, that is what got me hooked on Chryslers, Packards, Buicks, Mercurys etc.My uncle had a green 62 Pontiac Catalina 4 door sedan same color as the 64 hardtop in the previous episode (my favorite shade of green. First pick the 51 Buick , second the 51 Studebaker Land Cruiser.

WYR: 51 Olds because it's an Olds and because of the hyrdomatic transmission, and in a tough call, 51 Hudson. The 51 Olds is just beautiful and all the features it had then, Olds truly was a big part of GM's innovation division at this time. Thank you as always - Chuck

I like the overall look of the Buicks for that year. 1951 Olds. I am not a heavy chrome person especially with the muted art deco style, so actually I like the ‘49 olds better than anyone of the ‘51 ones. The Buick and Pontiacs of that time frame always reminds me of the Jimmy Stewart movie “Anatomy of a Murder” because his car in the movie is a early 1950 green Pontiac convertible.

Yes two thumbs and two big toes up for a wonderful, and thorough show * The 1st lot i'd take one 51 Olds 2dr, but if it was between only 4 doors it would be the Pontiac, unless it was a Roadmaster * In the 2nd lot it's the Hudson Hornet hands down. . . :>/

The "Rocket" engines were noted in early Rock music, but the "new for 1951" 331 Chrysler Firepower engines outclassed the Oldsmobile engine easily. The 331 had 180 BHP, which made Chrysler cars quicker than Buicks. The gas mileage for the 331 Chrysler cars was almost the same as Buick's cars of the same year.

It would be nice if you could point out original equipment and after market accessories. I'm pretty sure that the external visor and side window visors were aftermarket along with the mirrors but not sure.

For WYR, I would choose the '51 Buick, and the Olds. Thank you for the commercials! I guess these were on early television? Nice, imposing car. But I wish the hubcaps were there. Oh well....

Cops in 1951 - "Please pull over....I want to sing you a song about your car!" I think the globe emblem is amazing! No hubcaps? - But it does give it that NASCAR look of the era. LOL! I DO have a 1951 Studebaker 4-Door sedan! So I guess I "Already Rathered"!

Among convertibles, I would pick the Olds. The Buick is nice, but the mid-range Super had a smallish 263 engine. Ditto for the Pontiac, with a 268 engine. Among sedans, it would be a toss-up between the Olds and the Hudson.

Hi Jay. Great looking Olds, but to my eye, which is more familiar with Chevs, it looked more a 1953 body than 1951. So I googled images of 1951 Oldsmobile. The Olds 88's for that year do indeed appear to have the same basic body as 1951 Chevs, while the Olds 98's look much more like the 1953 Chev. So it looks to me like they gave the senior Olds a head start on using the newer body. Have a look at some images yourself and see if you concur.

WYR: All of them. They're all cool. NTT: 409 by The Beach Boys, I think. The cost to redo all the chrome, stainless, whatever it is will be through the roof.

51 Olds 51 Hudson 51's in general are cool. 51 is my birth year. I'm a big fan of Fords and I really like the 51 Ford but I think styling wise and power wise that the Old's probably gets the nod over the Ford for that year. Hard to believe that GM killed off both Oldsmobile and Pontiac. Both were great cars. To this day I can't understand why they kept Buick. A Buick was always your granddaddy's car and the rocket 88 was the cool Daddy-O car.

I'd have to take the Buick and Hudson. Jay Leno has a 3 on the tree Hornet. Cool car. And the 51 Buick is quite a looker. Also, Pittsburgh rock n roller Donnie Iris ("Ah! Leah!") has or had a 51 Buick, which he called his "pride and joy" on Rockline.

I've always characterized the 50 and 51 98s as the 'fat' Olds. They did it no favors are the incredibly clean 49, though it was probably in tune with the times. Interstingly, although the 98 was a C body, it was the 'lesser C' - compare to a Cadillac 62 or the big Buicks. Then in 52 the sedans became a stretched B body - with a much cleaner rear quarter and a better look overall. Really good quality body fit here on heavy guage steel, compare that with some of the crap they were putting out 20 years later. High quality interior materials too. WYR: 1) Buick, 2) Olds 98 - though the Hornet is a very close second.

I've never been a big fan of GM cars from any era, however I've always liked the first new Postwar design of 49. Slim, clean, beautiful. Especially the hardtops.Then in 50-51 it was ruined, looking like they put too much air in the original bodies. Fat, clumsy. I've often wondered when builders started the step down floors ( except Hudson ). Looks like GM was starting in that direction here. Druthers: 51 Pontiac, 51: Studebaker.

I'd go for th '51 Olds 98, if it were a Holiday coupe. I'd take the Hudson over anything else. I remember these ealy Olds V8. It seemed they made a chug-chug-chug sound when starting up from a stop.

That 60.8 inches wide for the black 51 Olds 98 is wrong. Those cars were 80.8 inches wide. Even a little old Tin Lizzie is more than 60 inches wide.

I would rather.... go with the '51 Olds, since Pontiac didn't have a V8 yet... and definitely the Olds in the second choice... but if I could have any early Olds 88, it'd be a '53 super 88. The song sounds like it's either Tom Petty's 'American Girl'... or The Cars 'My Best Friend's Girl"... Probably the second one. I suppose Ike Turner's "Rocket 88" would have been too obvious... LOL
