One of a series of films made by the Jam Handy Organization for Chevrolet, AN HONORARY DOCTOR'S DEGREE IN DRIVING dates to 1952 and features TV announcer Durward Kirby. Kirby guides viewers through some point-of-viewing driving footage that shows your what might happen on the road - especially with “brake braggers,” “armless wonders,” and “tail huggers” - dangers that never upset an expert “doctor of driving”!
Homer Durward Kirby (August 24, 1911 - March 15, 2000), known professionally as Durward Kirby (sometimes misspelled Durwood Kirby), was an American television host and announcer. He is best remembered for The Garry Moore Show in the 1950s and Candid Camera, which he co-hosted with Allen Funt from 1961 through 1966.

Another Jam Handy classic filmed in & around Detroit, 1952. The giveaway? Cunningham's Drugs, Grinnells (music store) Neisner's, and those majestic American Elms all over the place (which unfortunately, would die in about 15 years). Wish I could see which theater? that was at the end. [drive like that today - like I actually do - you'll have some slobby kid on your tail]

After spending some time driving in Europe, and Germany specifically, teaching a French man to drive in the alps without snow tires (YIKES) I would consider myself quite the expert. Always pass on the left, constantly scanning the horizon, foreground, and mirrors. My father was a truck driver for a time as well, even taught me how to time lights to keep the brakes nice and healthy.

My doctorate is earned, not honorary. I like to use the German phrase, "Ich bin einen Meisterfahrer" (I am a master driver). One would have to be to be able to avoid a squirrel at 40 mph in a large box truck!
