This was a great video!! I’ve enjoyed watching the rapid evolution of this channel. This one, more than a lot of the others, shows how to take literally nothing and make it something. Lockjaw and the Ford Wagon from last week…both of those would have earned nothing more than a sad head shake from me. Chad looks at them and says “I’m gonna drive that!” Then he sets about doing exactly that. Love this channel!!
LoL it's one of the joys of backyard automotive work. It never fails, you're under the pickup trying to put the transmission in using a floor jack and an end wrench and you drop the bolt. Not only is it lost forever, but now you're looking silly with a wrench in one hand and the jack in the other.
Chad I know your use to it, but you live in a paradise, nothing more beautiful than driving in the country, when we were kids and our father had us on Sundays we always asked to go for a ride in the country
Greetings from Scotland UK love this channel and the fact that nothing goes right for you ,but your perseverance always pays off I can relate to that., so keep up the good work and keep em vids coming .
Make sure U watch Oil pressure. When I was 15 (1972) My dad got me a 1968 Lemans with a non running 350. The timing gear looked like that. Rebuilt the motor myself & it fired right up. ran just a few minutes & started to seize. all those little pieces were in the oil pump pick up. Was a new pump. I had cleaned it but obviously not well enough. Was thinking they actually made their way into the pump & broke the drive but don't remember. expensive lesson.
Great series of videos on the Dude! Sometimes we have to follow our motivation. Sometimes it means getting our car on the road right now rather than fixing everything that needs fixing. I was chuckling and nodding as you were making your decisions. It hit home!
That old yeller saw right inside the door on the floor was glaring at you the whole time. A cool thermostat/no thermostat can cause buildup in the crankcase regardless of how much you change the oil.
I never use the gaskets in the kits on the china walls of the block. They squish out and leak. Always use RTV. I also only use the Right Stuff sealant, it’s really good.
Don’t forget to do the a jax down the carburetor several times that will help bring compression back slowly by reseating the rings. Remember when people did that in the 50s on the chebbys. I’ve done it on several motors that smoked really bad and it definitely works
I have a 1949 five window, when I it had nine couts of paint with a brush , so I sand blasted and it sixteen bags of sand , now this is 1976 ,so I primed it and drove to school and everybody made fun of it,and the girls wouldnot ride it the way it was so one week end I said to my self I will make it a show truck and it only 7 months and I had 13 coats of paint and took to the world of wheels and I one first place and to top it off I had Miss Golden shifter Linda Faugh on my runnig boards for pictures I had this truck for 47 years now and am on the fourth time re doing it, dont a lot of money, so I know were you are comming from,my truck has a 327 300 hp but I have good freind and now it puts way over 360 at the back wheels, and when I want to go street racing put my power glide in and when not the 350 is there it only take 20 min to change everything out,I also have a stock 52 235 4 speed that I drive for back up and thenI have 52 panel that I chopped 3.5 and I have a 66 buick drive tran I going to put in the panel truck and make it a sleepper, so enjoy what you have.
Growing up on the farm we had a 52 Chevy Straight 6 my older sister and use to ride in a riding club we use to pull 2 quarter horses in a 2 horse trailer behind. I was only 16 Dad wouldn't let us take the newer trucks afraid we'd go to fast. We had a hill on I-40 called Big Danger in Arkansas we usually ended up in 1st gear before we reached the top. Some of the Seniors in the Club ripped dad a new one over it. He bought a 62 Ford Short Step side straight 6 with a 4 Speed with Granny gear it wasn't the fastest but at least we could pull big Danger in 3rd gear. The joke on the other Team Members was a big thunderstorm hit one evening at a show and Dad happen to be there, they had to hook Tractors to the newer trucks but that old Ford with 2 quarter horses in the trailer walked right out of that mud on its own, we had started to unload but Dad was like nope slow and easy and she'll come out and sure enough not one wheel spun.
Chad I love that old truck! When I was growing up back in the 70's my Dad had an old 53 Chevy like that he called Ole Greenie man I'd love to find that truck and get it back for the memories! Dude needs a Big Block brother 😜
As you took off I noticed that the old steering box is bad worn an if a guy tries to tighten the nut on the adjuster... fixes the worn part in the middle of the worm but the ends get right too tight to make for decent steering. I did something your probably not even going to consider but I just went to a wrecking yard and found a power steering box on a car that I made a plate and adapted it to the side of the frame... that part was easier than getting a good steering rod to go the linkage on the axle and get it all hooked up... warning will robinson... lots of welding rod plus a cuss word or three may have been involved. Once done tho, it was so worth it as it was one finger and just plain dependable... I think it was a old amc jeepster looking thing I got the box off of but can't swear to it as its been more years than five dogs live...
Good work, doing the same on my 87' small block shortly... suspecting this exact thing. How about wrenching on the 51' (I think you mentioned another in the shed). Full custom on this and maybe a roadsteration close to stock on that one. The steering pretty hookie on this one for sure... the next project is steering (and go with power). Quite an eclectic selection of parts... keep it up. Amazing job on the 75 as well... floored when trans actually worked... though you were pretty thorough. Keep wrenchin'!... the watches and subscribers will come...
This one is great Chad, love me an old Chevy! Recently told a salesman that if I was going to spend 60 grand on a truck it'd have to be at least 60 years old and restored by me.
UK. My first car was a 1937 Morris 8 around 930cc and 22 BHP. I fitted something better with an Arnot supercharger. More or less the same engine but a bit later. I could out pull a Mini and outrun it. Morris 8 55mph as new, Oh My God at 80 it was lethal. The steering was like new but not at 80. I broke 3 half shafts in the back axle until I found some better ones from an MG. I did 240 miles in just under 4 hours and on pre motorway UK roads that isn't bad today. Love your videos, money ain't everything.
Just to let you know you will have someone out there tell you putting the balancer on with the bolt stretches the bolt i have been building Chevrolet motors since i was 15 and never used an installer and I'm 53 now
Love the truck! 327 and a 4spd sounds like a great combo! That 327 would be a excellent candidate for a budget rebuild. One thing tho, I'm a little worried about the teflon pieces that are now more then likely stuck in the oil pump pickup
I tell you brother I've watched vice grip garage & other shows that didn't stay down to earth like yours keep on going you have great content I'll keep watching peace
Cool truck and I love watching the old 1s get going again cause it brings back alot of memories....I remember when those trucks were plentiful and they just kept on going with the factory engines but the small block Chevy engines are alot better and that engines perfect for the ol truck. Nice video and I love seeing more of em
Wow this was a great video thank you for bringing me along every time I watch one of your videos I learn a little bit more and makes me want to go find an old motor and start building it don't even know what vehicle to go in but I guess I need to start somewhere your videos are very intriguing and thank you again
Not sure if you'll see this in an older video but have you considered a nv3500 from an s10? 5 speed usually found cheap because there considered junk but will hold up against a mild V8. Also the clutch master is much smaller then the current one. Just a thought. Love the videos and loving the use of all the junk haha
Man, your videos are great. My coworker and I play your videos while we work nights. The Moo-stang and all the cows had us laughing. The Dude is a beast for sure!
When you are pulling cars or trucks out with no brakes run your chane through a pice of pipe six or so foot long. Then you can stop them with it also you can push with it. Your brakes will stop the car or truck. A heavy iron pipe not muffler tubing. Be safe. I am 85yr have done what your doing for years also.
Changed a timing chain and cover on a 68 chevy pickuo that was so loose it ate the bottom of the timing chain cover from 3 o clock to 9 o clock. I took the chain off the gears without taking the cam gear off. How the hell that thing was still running i have no idea. This was a daily driver that belonged to a friend. He drove it to work everyday. Everyday he would put 3-4 quarts of oil in it. After a few months of this i finally asked him why dont you just fix the oil leak its probaly the front seal. He said i dont know how. I said bring it to my house, you buy the beer. Couple hours later and a 12 pack, no more oil leak. Drove it till he sold it years later.
👍Best channel ever! Really enjoying the content. Sure better watchin an ol feller do this stuff instead of me as my old back just screams when I have to do it. Good stuff Chad. Keep up the great work. I predict your channel has a bullet behind it as it sure is good common sense stuff & nothing fancy or a “show off” channel. Best to ya sir! 👍🇺🇸
The camera's perspective of the cruise at the end of this video is spectacular ! Great content creator. Chads accent,,, he's got to be from North Carolina I'm think'en Let's grow this channel everyone, Subscribe & like !! I wanna see the blooper swear word video's !!!!
You might want to check with Northen auto parts and some of your hearts dealings with them and they’re cheaper Jaggs or anybody else or sometimes cheaper for the same parts
The nylon cam gear teeth are mostly sucked up into the oil pump sump or gathered below it waiting for their chance to finish clogging it up. You WAY over torqued the front carburetor bolts, warping the whole carburetor. This is a very common mistake. I would venture to say that 95 percent of Quadrajets have been warped because of this.
One thing I would change if it was my truck which it is not as I get a little bit bigger steering wheel that puppy seems like a lot of extra work being so small.
