Aaron Severson over at ateupwithmotor.com shines a light once again on orphan cars.
This time he's written about some of Studebaker's most handsome vehicles in an article called "The Once and Future Coupe: The Loewy Coupes and the Studebaker Hawk."
At Torq-O, we pulled up the rug and slid through the trap door searching for some media to help him tell his story. From the Torq-O Media Archive, here's some celluloid that hasn't been seen since 1953.
Check out Aaron's story, and then slide over to Torq-O.com for more Studebaker content!

Excellent video! The 1953 Studebaker sure was a beauty!

I have always thought the original '53 was the most beautiful version of this body style - including all the Hawks that came after.

That is a REALLY Sharp Looking car! The ones that came with Overdrive got really good gas mileage! Better MPG than an Aircooled VW !

Before Chrysler said "Suddenly it's 1960" in 1957, Studebaker was already there 4 years before with the. long, low, wide look, and tailfins!

Folks, these are classic car films. Please, let's keep this channel free of politics. There are plenty of other places to discuss all of this stuff. I have strong opinions just like you guys, but I don't express them here. I ask the same of you. Humble thanks. ------Todd Ruel

It was easily one of the best designs for its time. It was the early 1960s before we saw the Mustang, Camaro, Firebird, Challenger, and Barracuda.

@halloranedward Excellent! Have you ever seen the amazing 1964 Studebaker product film called "Different By Design"? It was an unintentional last hurrah from Studebaker, and it's a great film. The entire 1964 product line (well, up until December 1963 anyway) is covered.

FYI, the 1964 models all had Studebaker engines. The '65-66s had McKimsons which were very similar to Chevrolets.

Studes were in general competently put-togther by the company's vaunted "father-son teams", however this Euro-style design was so popular that it stressed Stude's production capacity to the max. The result was that all but the earliest VINs often show up today with signs of shoddy assembly (e.g., missing or abnormal welds, irregular body seams, etc.). Dealers lamented that the factory had initially sent them so many of the dumpy sedans, vs. coupes -- which is where this styling really shone and which everyone wanted. By the time the production mix was adjusted, the bloom was off the rose for model year demand.
@50zcarsman
@50zcarsman 13 лет назад
These cars looked great in coupe form (as shown here), but failed as sedans -- the lines just didn't transfer well to a four-door model. Even today they look ungainly, while the two-door is recognized as a true classic.

This has to be the first real entry of an American car manufacturer to compete with European style, rakish lined cars. The Vette was introduced the same year, and the following year the 55 Thunderbird was introduced.
@Jbacks57
@Jbacks57 12 лет назад
@50zcarsman Agreed! I owned a 1954 Regal Delux Commander 232 V-8 with wire wheels... best looking car around. The sedans were hideous--- unfortunately Studebaker screwed up & made more sedans when people wanted the coupes.

I totally agree with the commercial's commentary - and I just would like Studebaker to get back to building cars - evolving from their excellent predecessors. Anyone know what the corporate structure is since it changed to becoming a financial company in 1966?

Does anyone know where that was filmed? It looks like it was fulmed by the Studebaker Automotive Proving Grounds. Along side it was the summer vacation home in what is called Bendix Woods by South Bend.

The car shown in the vid is one of the first 500 off the line, as indicated by the tri-star hood ornament. Its design was so close to Mercedes' own trademarked star emblem that Mercedes sued Studebaker to get it removed. Studebaker entered into a consent decree to do that, and the star was replaced.
@FennixGamingYT
@FennixGamingYT Год назад
I’m pretty sure the star emblem went on for almost a year, I’ve spoken to a few people in the Studebaker Drivers club and they seem to say the Star emblem is more common on 53’s than not. Personally, I prefer the Star to the later “V” logo, I’m glad the champion Starlight Coupe I’m looking to buy has the 3 star 😁
@roberthaworth8991
@roberthaworth8991 Год назад
@@FennixGamingYT Depends. The relatively few 1953s that were assembled at Vernon (LA) utilized the tri-stars, even on the hood and trunk, through the entire model year. But after the cease-and-desist order from MB was acknowledged by HQs in South Bend -- which was early -- the other factories used them only until their then-current supply of the stars ran out. Tri-stars also orig. appeared at a couple points in the interior (rear seat ashtray door; radio-delete plate), and those lasted much longer in production -- presumably b/c they were not as immed. noticeable as the ones outside.
@FennixGamingYT
@FennixGamingYT Год назад
@@roberthaworth8991 Well the car I'm looking to buy (and currently attempting to get running) has the Tri Star in all of those locations except it doesn't have the radio delete plate, it has the AM radio lol. Guess it's a pretty early one then!

@promotodd

This makes a lot of sense. The marketing for the car had to be ready at the same time as the car's introduction, so they would naturally need cars to shoot. Since film production schedules are made months in advance, it makes sense that this would be a very early production model.

Ironic in that Studebaker-Packard would acquire the rights to distribute Mercedes-Benz vehicles in the US in 1957.

i owned a 64 (canadian) There was enough metal in the door to make a toyota prius, When I came to a place where two lanes merged into one, people would pull onto the shoulder rather than challenge me. it's tiny little chevy six was so very simple and strong enough to tow most small trucks made today, and in spite of it's lack of ridiculous mandatory parts got excellent mileage, even on unleaded.

Rest assured the economy will right itself in time, in spite of this current administration's attacks on business. One bit of advice: don't let anyone tell you it can't be done- there are many market niches in the automotive world the old giants don't wanna fill.

If they'd made a 4 door in the manner of the Honda Element or Nissan Juke where there's no visible rear door handle, they could have retained the 2 door line with the 4 door functionality.
